STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION

“For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather of power and love and self-control.” 2 TIMOTHY 1:7 Many of us compartmentalize our Faith, we bring it out only when we attend Mass or when we attend a parish event. Being a good steward requires disci-pline and striving to put God first in everything, all the time. The next time you are at a neighborhood party, at work or out shopping, would your actions signal to others that you are a good and faithful ser-vant of our Lord?

Please pray for all the faithful departed

STAND UP AND BE COUNTED!

Or kneel down. Or just sit there. You see, it's census time in the Archdiocese of Chicago. But there are no forms to fill out, neither will any census taker be stopping at your place of residence for an interview. No robo-calls, nothing in the mail, either snail of "e." To be included in this census, all you need do is go to Mass on the weekends of October. Every October the Archdiocese asks the pastors of every parish to count the number of people who attend Mass on that month's four weekends. The information compiled in these "October counts" gives the Church of Chicago a sense of what's happening in terms of demographics and one dimension of parish vitality. The data is especially important during these years of RENEW MY CHURCH. It compares church capacity with numbers of worshippers to evaluate which parishes should combine with others if the numbers are small, and which should continue as they are if the numbers are large. Here's an example of what I am talking about. Last year, the October count here at Saint Cornelius was 785. (This number was up from the previous year by 70.) The capacity of St. Cornelius church is approximately 850. As I mentioned in our first RENEW MY CHURCH Town Hall Meeting, this means that all the people who attend all the Masses at our parish last October could have fit in to our church for one Mass, and there would still be some room for more. The situations are similar in the other parishes in our grouping. Last October, St. Tarcissus reported a total of 705, and St. Thecla 547. Neither of these figures are even close to each church's seating capacity. Looking at these figures, it's easy to understand why the Archdiocese feels that our three parishes should be joined to make one larger parish, although how many worship sites this new parish will have is yet to be determined. If you are in to statistics, here are some that the were given us by the Archdiocese concerning last year's Octo-ber count. -At all parishes and missions of the Archdiocese, 379,168 Catholics attended weekend mass during the count. That's about 20% of Catholics who live within the territory of the Archdiocese. -The 2018 number above reflects a decline of 4.2% (abut 16,760) from the 2017 October count, while 34% of parishes experienced an increase in attendance over the previous year, including St. Cornelius. -About 48 non-parish institutions offer weekend Mass, such as hospitals, nursing homes, and religious commu-nities. Hospitals served 570 Mass goers, while aging and residential care facilities served 1,150. -Religious Communities reported 2,900 attendees, and shrines/oratories had 5,800.

-Three campus ministry sites served 2,900 during the count last year.

Today we begin the 2019 October Count. I have asked the ushers to count everyone in church—men, women, and children—during the singing of the responsorial psalm which follows the first reading in the Liturgy of the Word. (At the 9:00 Mass, the count will be taken before the children are dismissed for their Liturgy of the Word.) This has been our practice for the past several years. They will record the information and pass it along to me; I, in turn, will send it downtown one October is concluded. Recently, the October count has been extended to religious education programs. Principals of Catholic Schools continually update the Archdiocese as to their particular enrollment numbers. The Archdiocese want the same data for public school students participating in catechetical programs. Last year, as of Oct. 1, Saint Cornelius reported a total of 94 students enrolled in our program. This year, that number has jumped to 120. That's quite an increase, and speaks very well for the quality of our program. Wouldn't it be great if this year's church count could reflect a comparable increase. Let's work on that. Invite family and friends to accompany you to Mass on the weekend. The worst they can say is, "No," but perhaps some will accept your overture. Even if it's just one person, that's one more person hearing the word and feast-ing on the body and blood of Christ. Little victories are victories none-the-less. Father Dan

Renew My Church: A Call to Humility, Trust, Hope and Charity

As our Grouping Team continues the strenuous task of prayerfully discerning and thoughtfully dis-cussing the strengths and weaknesses of the various scenarios presented a few weeks ago, we would do well to keep a few scriptural passages in mind:

“Then an argument broke out among them about which of them should be regarded as the great-est. He said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them and those in authority over them are addressed as ‘Benefactors’; but among you it shall not be so. Rather, let the greatest among you be as the youngest, and the leader as the servant. For who is greater: the one seated at table or the one who serves? Is it not the one seated at table? I am among you as the one who serves. (Luke 22: 23-27)

I encourage all of us to meditate on this passage and its impact for our own lives and, in a special way, our thoughts as to what might be best for the future of our parish and our place in the renewal of the Church for the entire Chicagoland area. We are called to serve one another. The Renew My Church prayer that we shared at the beginning of this process and that is prayed by our Grouping Team at every meeting offers these intentions:

Pour out the gift of your Holy Spirit upon us, and so enable us to hear you clearly to listen to each other attentively to imagine our future boldly to discern your direction wisely to persevere in your holy will courageously to stay together in charity to surrender our own plans readily to embrace the greater good to hand on your gifts to future generations.

Let us continue to make these intentions our own as a daily expression of our love for and hope in Jesus Christ, His Church and our entire Archdiocesan faith community.

OCTOBER IS RESPECT LIFE MONTH Christ Our Hope: In Every Season of Life

From the time we are knit together in our mothers’ wombs until we take our final breaths, each moment of our lives is a gift from God. While every season of life brings its own challenges and trials, each sea-son also gives us new opportunities to grow in our relationship with God. Today the gift of life is threatened in countless ways. Those who are most vulnerable, rather than receiv-ing the protection they deserve, are all too often seen as a burden and as expendable. As new at-tacks on human life continue to emerge, we can be tempted to despair, but Christ instead offers us un-failing hope. Hope is not false optimism or empty positivity. Chris-tian hope is something much more profound and goes to the very depths of our identity as followers of Christ. Hope is the virtue “by which we desire the kingdom of heaven and eternal life as our happiness, placing our trust in Christ's promises and relying not on our own strength, but on the help of the grace of the Holy Spirit” (CCC, 1817). Like us, Christ entered the world through the womb of a woman. He willingly experienced the fullness of human suffering. He breathed his last on the Cross at Calvary in order that He might save us. There-fore, “God is the foundation of hope: not any god, but the God who has a human face and who has loved us to the end” (Spesalvi31). Christians know “they have a future: it is not that they know the details of what awaits them, but they know in general terms that their life will not end in emptiness” (SS 2). For this reason, a woman experiencing a difficult pregnancy can find the strength to welcome her pre-cious child into the world. A man facing a terminal diagnosis can see that the end of his earthly life is only the beginning of eternal life with Christ. The Church teaches us that “the one who has hope lives differently” (SS 2). Christ’s promise of salvation does not mean that we will be spared from suffering. Rather, the promise of salvation ensures that even in the darkest moments of our lives, we will be given the strength to persevere. By virtue of this Christian hope, we can face any challenge or trial. When the seas of life swell and we are battered by the waves, hope allows us to remain anchored in the heart of God. May we hold fast to Christ our hope, from the beginning of life to its very end.

Responding to Domestic Violence in Our Community On Sunday October 6, Fr.Charles W. Dahm, O.P, Director of Domestic Violence Outreach for the Archdiocese of Chicago, will preach at all the Masses at St. Cornelius parish. Although largely unseen, domestic violence is rampant in the United States, including in our community. Calls about domestic violence are the most frequent re-ceived by local police in our community. On Monday, October 7,Fr. Dahm will speak at the convent meeting room at 7:00 pm with those pa-rishioners interested in learning more about do-mestic violence and/or helping our parish respond to the needs of victims in our community as sensi-tively and compassionately as we can.

St. Cornelius PPC Meeting Minutes September 9, 2019

Call to order and opening prayer– Ron Polaniecki, President, called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m.

Roll Call – Ettore Boggetto, Tony Lupinski, and Al Trigo were absent.

Approval of Minutes – A motion was made and seconded to accept the May 6th minutes as presented. The motion was approved.

Staff Report–Joan McConville will fill in for Sr. Ann Marie as parish nurse. The timing of Sr. Ann Marie’s return is unknown, pending her recovery from treatment. Safety items around the parish that have been initiated by Sister will be put on hold pending her return. Revisions to the St Cornelius Parish Registration Form are in process as there have been requests to simplify and shorten the form. Revisions are due October 2019.

Transformation Report A. Finance– Currently there is a $46,000 shortfall in revenue vs. expenses. The revenue from the lease of the chimney of the school building to construct a cell phone tower has been spent to reduce the deficit. Weekly Sunday collections and fund raising continue to fall short of needs. An update from the Finance Committee meeting scheduled for September 24th will be ready for the next PPC meeting. The Parish Financial Report is to be published in October.

B. School – A recent meeting with the Office of Catholic Schools resulted in a decision to split the North and South cam-puses of Pope Francis Global Academy (PFGA). There is nothing more to report on the school structure as decisions from the Renew My Church (RMC) process are awaited.

The Chicago Archdiocese continues to support Pope Francis Global Academy (PFGA) with $300,000 annually; this is not sustainable. Fr. Dan will attend a meeting of the PFGA faculty to discuss RMC. Enrollment at PFGA has fallen short of the anticipated 600 student level for a variety of reasons, and has led to the need for Archdiocese to continue to help with funding.

C. Mission – Ron Polaniecki reported that a parish Bible Study focusing on the Acts of the Apostles will be conducted on Mondays at 7p.m., starting October 14.. Connie Polaniecki, who heads the parish’s Respect Life Committee, recently met with the Spanish Community to explain the Respect Life program at St. Cornelius and to ask for their input and ideas on how to further involve them in Respect Life activities.

Old Business – No outstanding old business to discuss.

New Business

A. Renew My Church a. Town Hall meeting held August 19 – Approximately 100 persons were in attendance. The response of the

participants overall was positive. The questions asked were well thought out and there was recognition that RMC is a reality. A summary of the comments from the St. Tarcissus’ and St. Thecla’s Town Hall Meetings reflected a primary concern about the school impact of RMC. Fr. Dan reminded that the next RMC town hall meeting will be September 16, with 50 percent of the meeting being a recap of previous information and 50 percent new information. A written survey will follow the meeting to gather attendee reactions.

b. Facilities Structure Report – Fr. Dan shared a report from the Archdiocese of Chicago following their assessment of all St. Cornelius facilities. Included in the report are assessments of the church, rectory, convent and school buildings. The overall assessments of the other two parishes in the grouping, -- in-cluding their school facilities-- had comparable results and recommendations to those of St. Cornelius.

c. Upcoming Events – Parish Picnic Sunday September 22 – Colleen Monforti reported that all permits are in hand. Out-door activities will feature the bouncy house/bouncy slide and snow-cone treats. Fund-raising ac-tivities are fully staffed with volunteers. The placement of the music set-up and food is being re-vised to increase space around food tables. St. Tarcissus has offered additional folding tables for our use. Donations of items for games and basket raffles are abundant. Religious education stu-dents are being asked to help with games. Online volunteer registration is still open. There is a $4,000 shortfall on the annual Parish Raffle ticket sales as compared to the same time last year. Novena for Healing and Atonement, September 24, 7p.m. -- Fr. Dan will be presiding. Bishop Mark Bartosic will participate in the evening’s Eucharistic adoration, readings and reflections.

Closing Prayer and Adjournment – The meeting adjourned at 7:55 p.m. The next PPC meeting is scheduled for Monday Novem-ber 4, 2019. All are invited to attend these meetings.
