History

On April 23, 1833, his 20th birthday, Blessed Frédéric Ozanam, a devout Catholic and defender of the faith, along with five other students attending

the Sorbonne — the University of Paris — formed The Conference of Charity. A short time thereafter the name was changed to The Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Their motive in this undertaking was simply to manifest their love of Jesus Christ by helping the poor and distressed.

Mission Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organization, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to those who are needy and suffering in the tradition of its founder, Blessed Frédéric Ozanam, and patron, St. Vincent de Paul.

Organized locally, Vincentians witness God’s love by embracing all works of charity and justice. The Society collaborates with other people of good will in relieving need and addressing its causes, making no distinction in those served because, in them, Vincentians see the face of Christ.

From the beginning, the central and most basic activity of our Conferences has been the visitation of the needy in their homes. This is the clearest symbol of our Vincentian charism, which dictates the highest respect for the dignity of the poor. In the home we protect the privacy and dignity of those in need and they are better able to confide in us their stories of struggle. In that setting, we listen, offer humble advice, and render assistance.

Saint Lawrence O’Toole Conference On Christmas Eve in 1865 a Conference was formed at the Church of Saint Lawrence O’Toole, named for and dedicated to the Irish martyr. A short time later the Church was entrusted to the Jesuits and the name was changed to Saint Ignatius Loyola. Our Conference retained its original name and was aggregated by the Council General on April 23, 1866, the birthday of our founder. We will soon be celebrating our 150th anniversary!

In addition to our home visits and bi-weekly meetings throughout the year, we coordinate blood drives, food drives during the Advent and Lenten seasons, luncheons for the senior members of our parish and the neighboring community, turkey and Thanksgiving drives, toy drives, and Christmas Angel projects. On the second Tuesday of every month we serve dinners at Ronald McDonald House, and from November through April we operate a women’s shelter in Wallace Hall.

We are deeply grateful for the generous contributions of our benefactors. If it were not for you we would not be able to provide the necessary financial assistance to our

neighbors in need. The assistance can be in the form of rent, utilities, and funeral expenses, just to name a few; the list goes on.

Seeing the Face of Christ in Those We Serve Last Christmas Eve, on the anniversary of our Conference, my fellow Vincentian and I made a home visit. While we brought appreciation, relief, and hope to our neighbor, we in turn received joy, awareness, and an experience of consolation and compassion.

The next day I stayed close to home as I was scheduled to have wrist surgery the day after. While walking home from dinner,

I passed a man sitting on the sidewalk in front of a 7-Eleven. As I passed him, I thought about him sitting alone and cold on Christmas Night. I had just received a complimentary dinner from my friends at a local restaurant and I had food to take home. I walked back to the man and asked if he would like some food. His head was down and I repeated the question. Without looking at me, he asked what it was. When I told him it was lamb, he said, “Yes, I would like it.” I went into the 7-Eleven and brought him back some utensils, and as I bent down to hand him the food, he looked up at me and we both wished each other a Merry Christmas.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY NOW

PLEASE REMEMBER US LATER! Remember St. Ignatius in

Your Estate Plan.Over the years, it has been the gifts left to the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola in wills, bequests, and memorials that have helped us to continue to operate: as a place of worship, as a place to protect and teach our children, and as a caring and generous parish where area residents

may come for spiritual guidance. If you would like information about planned giving,

contact Fernando Castro, Treasurer, or visit our website at www.stignatiusloyola.org

2015–2016 Guide to Parish MinistriesAs a parish dedicated to The Ignatian Way of prayer, service, and community, we invite you pick up a copy of our 2015–2016 Guide

to Parish Ministries, which details the various ministries and programs available here at St. Ignatius Loyola.

Copies are available in the Narthex, at the Parish House, and online at www.stignatiusloyola.org

If you feel attracted to the Catholic faith, we want you to know about a program at the Parish.

A group will meet here during the year to inquire into the Catholic faith, to come to know Jesus through

the Gospels, and to pray and to prepare for the Easter Sacraments.

This process, which is called the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, is also open to those Catholic

adults who have not received the Sacraments of First Communion or Confirmation.
