Fiscal Year 2014 was incredibly rich for our parish. We gathered for liturgies and concerts, lectures and celebrations. We became better educated about Ignatian Spirituality, human trafficking, and global poverty. When opportunities arose to contribute to worthy causes, the response was overwhelming. Ministries continued to grow and offered a remarkable range of programs and activities. Attendance was strong at many events, particularly the Faith That Does Justice lecture series, sponsored by Ignatian Social Justice. It was a very rich year.

Highlights of Fiscal Year 2014- The 25th season of Sacred Music in a Sacred Space, featuring the Rachmaninoff Vespers and Mozart’s Requiem.- The Faith That Does Justice lecture series, with talks on Human Trafficking/Modern Slavery, Catholic Social Teaching and Public Policy, Pope Francis, and Catholic Identity.- Lectures on Dorothy Day, John the Baptist, Julian of Norwich, interpreting the Bible, and praying with icons.- A Bible study class, focusing on the Gospel of John.- Meeting Christ in Prayer, an eight-week program of renewal based on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius.- Talks on Ignatian Spirituality and Catholic Faith in Everyday Life, both sponsored by the Ignatian 40s.- Two Lay Ministers’ Enrichment programs: “Bringing Contemplation into Action/Bringing Action into Contemplation;” and “The Year of the Family: A Journey from the Vatican to the Street and Back Again.”

- A pilgrimage to Spain and Portugal, led by Father Witt. Thirty pilgrims walked the last 70 miles of the Camino to Santiago de Compostela and visited holy sites in Portugal, including Fatima.- Two Liturgies of the Anointing of the Sick.- Thanksgiving, Advent, and Lenten Food Drives, sponsored by the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, and the Archdiocesan Feeding Our Neighbors drive. - Additional SVdP service projects: Christmas Angels, Christmas toy drive, 2 blood drives, Friends of the Poor Walk, Ronald McDonald House, Senior Luncheon, and Women’s Shelter.- Advent and Lenten Days of Reconciliation.- The joyous Christmas Masses and the solemn beauty of our Holy Week liturgies. Attendance during Christmas and Holy Week totaled more than 11,700 worshippers!- The Lenten Cross project, sponsored by Ignatian Social Justice, which resulted in hundreds of commitments to service, advocacy, and prayer.- Night Prayer, which offered the opportunity to spend 30 minutes in prayer one evening a week during the Season of Lent.- The annual Easter Memorial Liturgy.

Making All Things New The original intent in 2013-14 had been to continue our focus on The Ignatian Way, which was the linchpin around which Fiscal Year 2013 revolved. However, the appearance last October of Making All Things New, the Archdiocesan initiative for assessing and merging/closing parishes, necessitated a change in plans. Every parish had the opportunity to engage in self-assessment (Phase I), and then work with nearby parishes to discern the best way forward for their particular area (Phase II). Each pastor was asked to form a “core team” of parishioners and the St. Ignatius Loyola team included Kathy Murnion (chair), Jane Vardy (secretary), Marissa Blackett, Gerard Ryan, and Frank Vardy.

Our self-assessment took the form of a parish survey (October) and three Town Hall Meetings (November). Members of our core team worked over the winter months with the teams in our cluster: St. Thomas More, St. Francis de Sales, and Holy Agony. As Father Witt reported, our recommendation to the Archdiocesan Advisory Committee was that we remain four independent parishes, and that we find ways to work together that will benefit us all and strengthen the church’s presence here on the Upper East Side. Cardinal Dolan’s final decisions are expected soon.

In good Ignatian fashion, as we begin another fiscal year, we take the time to express our gratitude to God for the year that has passed. As the accompanying Spiritual Report clearly indicates, the parish was blessed with a rich array of programs and opportunities to develop and deepen our faith. And as the Financial Report clearly indicates, this was accomplished through the support of tremendous generosity.

Thanks to your stewardship, 2013-2014 was an exceptionally strong year. We are proudly reporting an operating surplus of $749,329, an increase of 18% over the year before. This is truly noteworthy considering that we experienced two consecutive years of operating deficits just five and six years ago. Your willingness to share your gifts and talents with the parish is a wonderful example of the commitment to the church that Pope Francis has been encouraging for every person of faith. I am honored to serve as pastor of such a wonderful parish. Allow me to highlight a few details.

Revenue Overall, our total operating revenue increased by 12%. This was mainly due to an 8% increase in Parishioner Contributions. The largest increase in this area was in the Annual Collection, which was up an incredible 33%. The regular Sunday Collections and the Christmas Collection were also up.

You will note, of course, that the Spring Collection indicates a sharp decrease from the prior year. This is explained by the fact that due to the strong response to the Annual Appeal, we did not send a formal appeal letter in the spring. It had long been the hope of the f inance advisory committee that the Annual Appeal would raise enough funds to eliminate the need for a second major appeal in the same year. This year the parish succeeded in achieving this goal, and it is my sincere hope that we can repeat this in Fiscal Year 2015.

Other Gifts and Collections were also strong. This figure primarily represents donations made by a few particularly generous parishioners.

In the category of Sacramental Offerings, there was a reduction of 14%. This decrease was due mainly to a drop in offerings associated with Weddings. This is no cause for alarm. Our wedding ministry remains quite strong, and fully consistent with the recent past. Fiscal Year 2013 was a bit of an anomaly as a handful of couples made exceptionally large donations to the parish. This year’s numbers are more in line with historical data.

We also saw a modest decline in Rentals this past year. Since Wallace Hall was not available for the dates they sought, the auction company that rented the space in prior years did not renew its contract in Fiscal Year 2014. We hope to retain them in the future.

On a more positive note, Music revenue was up 49%. This was accomplished through the hard work of our Music staff, under the leadership of our Director of Music Ministries, Scott Warren. It has been nearly three years since Scott took over the reins of the music program and he has accomplished so much. Attendance at Sacred Music in a Sacred Space concerts has increased, and so have overall music revenues. He has also brought a fresh perspective, incorporating Advent Lessons and Carols and Chanticleer into the concert series.

Interparish Religious Education and Other Revenue have remained fairly consistent.

Expenses Overall, our total operating expenses were up by 11% from Fiscal Year 2013. Although this might seem a bit high, the increase can be deceiving, for most of it had been budgeted, and the cumulative increase was actually less than what we had originally projected.

Personnel costs increased by 8% over last year. This includes a modest wage increase for all of our employees, as well as the creation of a new position, “Communications Coordinator.” Health insurance and pension costs also rose sharply.

As our membership continues to grow, and as we expand our ministries, the need for space and for other parish resources also grows. This is evidenced by the increase in Physical Plant Expenses. Included under this heading are the many costs associated with the regular upkeep of the church and parish house, including cleaning and maintenance supplies, furniture and fixtures, property insurance, and utilities.

In a continued effort to maintain and improve our facilities, we undertake small capital projects each year. In Fiscal Year 2014 we completely renovated the Sacristy. We also replaced the sound system in Wallace Hall, repaired and restored the metal fence, rails, gates and handicap ramps, and upgraded the plumbing on the third and fourth floors of the parish house.

Concert costs increased by 34%, but this increase is directly correlated with the increase in Music revenue discussed on page 4.

We were able to realize modest cost savings through reduced expenditures in the Interparish Religious Education program, and in Other Activities as well.

Conclusion

The parish is committed to responsible and effective stewardship of the gifts you have entrusted to us. We will continue carefully and effectively to manage our financial resources under the guidance of our Parish Treasurer, Fernando Castro, and the oversight of our very capable finance advisory committee.

We commit surplus funds to our operating reserves so that they are readily available for the future operating and capital needs of the parish.

Thank you for continuing to support our parish with your time and resources. They are the means through which we are able to advance the mission and ministries of our parish.

Sincerely in Christ,

Rev. George M. Witt, S.J.Pastor

Please note: Important ministries of our Parish are represented by the Grammar School and Day Nursery. Their annual operating budgets, respectively, are approximately $5.7 million and $2.8 million. While we are not including information on these budgets in this report, I assure you of the overall financial health and good management of both institutions. We are blessed to have strong leadership provided by our Principals, Mary Larkin and Theodora Crist.
