The Fifth Commandment (Part II) continues

The Fifth Commandment means that everyone ought to promote peace. Therefore, the following are to be considered in light of this Commandment. 1 “All citizens and all governments are obliged to

work for the avoidance of war.” However, “as long as the danger of war persists and there is no intentional authority with the necessary compe-tence and power, governments cannot be denied the right of lawful self-defense, once all peace efforts have failed.”

2 There are strict conditions for legitimate defense by military force that requires rigorous consider-ation.” The gravity of such a decision makes it subject to rigorous conditions of moral legitima-cy. At one and the same time:

�� The damage inflicted by the aggressor on the na-

tion or community of nations must be lasting, grace, and certain;

�� All other means of putting and end to it must have been shown to be impractical or ineffective;

�� There must be serious prospects of success; �� The use of arms must not produce evils and dis-

orders graver than the evil to be eliminated. The power of modern means of destruction weighs very heavily in evaluating this condition.

These are the traditional elements enumerated in what is called the “just war” doctrine.

Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time

September 6, 2020 “Jesus said to his disciples, ‘If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have won over your brother. If he does not listen take one or two others along with you, so that every fact may be established on the testimony of two or three witnesses... Amen I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything for which they are to pray it shall be granted to them by my heaven-ly Father. For where two or three...’” Which seems better, that everyone know about a dis-agreement with you, or discreetly find a way to ad-dress it, with no one else being aware of it? Certainly, there is faster healing resulting in peace and content-ment. One of the greatest powers we possess, is the power to forgive. Unfortunately, it is a power we seem to hold in reserve and often refuse to use. How often we have heard the phrase ‘forgive and for-get’, but an unfair accusation or allegation cannot be easily forgotten. A wise, holy monk taught me to re-spond to a hurt with ‘forgive and remember without bitterness.’ Try it, it works.

Cenacle Prayer Group The Cenacle Prayer Group meets every Tuesday

evening in the church at 6:30 for Eucharistic Ado-

ration, prayer, and fellowship. We pray for an in-

crease in vocations to the priesthood and for the

holiness and protection of priests, including the

Pope. We also pray for seminarians, deacons, reli-

gious sisters, and the needs of St James parish and

its parishioners. The Sacrament of Reconciliation

is available too.

All are invited to join us any Tuesday evening. Bring your rosary!

We are grateful to those who, after they have been away, contribute their make-up enve-lopes upon their return. Weekly envelopes support the Church by as-sisting in the payment of bills and by keeping

We are in need of Ushers for our Sunday Masses Ushers are called to be Ministers of Hospitality.

They are entrusted with promoting a sense of welcoming and belonging to all the faithful assembled for worship. They are the first point of con-tact for the communal celebration of the Liturgy and because of this, should take special steps in being living representatives of the Par-ish. Ushers minister to the entire community in a very active way.
