St. Maria Goretti
St. Maria Goretti (October 16, 1890 – July 6, 1902) is an Italian virgin-martyr of the Catholic Church, and one of the youngest canonized saints.[1] She was born to a farming family. Her father died when she was nine, and they had to share a house with another family, the Serenellis. Maria took over household duties while her mother, brothers, and sister worked in the fields. One afternoon, Alessandro, the Serenellis' son, made sexual advances to her. When she refused to submit to him, he stabbed her fourteen times. She was taken to the hospital but she died forgiving him. He was arrested, convicted, and jailed. During imprisonment he repented. After 27 years he was released from prison, and visited her mother to beg forgiveness, which she granted. He later became a lay brother in a monastery, dying peacefully in 1970. She was beatified in 1947, and canonized in 1950.

Almighty God, Father of all nations, for freedom you have set us free in Christ Jesus. We praise you and bless you for the gift of religious liberty, the foundation of human rights, justice, and the common good. Grant to our leaders the wisdom to protect and promote our liberties; by your grace may we have the courage to defend them, for ourselves and for all those who live in this blessed land. We ask this through the intercession of Mary Immaculate, our patroness, and in the name of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, with whom you live and reign, one God, for ever and ever. Mis hijos espirituales,
Antes de ir esta semana para comenzar otro capítulo de mi ministerio sacerdotal a través de la Arquidiócesis de Nueva York, quisiera dar gracias primeramente a DIOS Todopoderoso y luego a S.E.R. Mons. Timoteo Cardenal Dolan, nuestro arzobispo, por esta oportunidad de ocho meses de servir a la comunidad hispana y a los otros fieles de Mahopac y esta región (sin olvidar de experiencias en Harriman y otros lugares). Llevaré conmigo recuerdos de los primeros matrimonios en español en cuatro años en esta zona, nuestra campaña de buscar e invitar al hispano local a esta parroquia, los esfuerzos de animar a los adultos sin sacramentos de conseguirlos, las primeras Misas hispanas de Jueves Santo y Jueves de la Ascensión y la primera Liturgia completa de la Pasión del Viernes Santo en español en la historia de la parroquia y del hambre y de la sed de varias personas de aprender y de crecer en la plenitud y del marco histórico de nuestra fe católica. Recordaré también, entre otras cosas, la bondad de varios fieles durante mis dificultades de salud hace varios meses y el avance con el apostolado pro-vida de nuestra parroquia. Dios bendiga a los esfuerzos de nuestro párroco, Padre Philip Caruso, y del Diácono John Scarfi de servir a la comunidad hispana además a toda la parroquia. Agradezco al Padre Patrick McCarthy por su apoyo durante su administración provisoria. Mantengamos ustedes a mi persona y yo a ustedes en oración.
