THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT – December 11, 2016
This Sunday is Gaudete Sunday, and you may have
noticed a lot of pink (or rose) at Mass today. The priest may have worn rose vestments, and we lit the
third Advent candle, also pink. The reason we change the color this week is because we have passed the midpoint of Advent, and the Church
wants to remind us of the joy of the season that we are about to enter at Christmas.
* * *
In our weekly “Did you know?” section, we’ll try to explain “mysteries of the Mass” and other parts of the
Catholic faith. If you have a question you’d like to submit, please email [email protected].

The Prophets: Bible Study
Wednesdays beginning January 18 at 7:00PM and Mondays beginning January 23 at 9:30AM
If we consider that God is the Divine Bridegroom and the Church is the Bride, then the prophets can be seen as “spiritual marriage counselors.” They afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted,
calling us to return to our covenant relationship with God. They urge us to repentance, warn us of the
dangers of sin, and announce the blessings of faithfulness, their prophetic words speak to us even
today, as they draw us closer to our heavenly Bridegroom.
To register fill out the form in next week’s bulletin or the forms on the bulletin boards in the chapel.

SYNOPSIS IN ENGLISH/SUMARIO EN INGLÉS The first article is an invitation to all parishioners and neighbors to the traditional Mexican serenade of Our Lady of Guadalupe on her day, Monday, December 12 at 4 a.m. in the chapel. A free breakfast will follow in the Msgr. Powers Room of the chapel. It will be worth waking up early!
The article at left explains why the color rose may be worn by clergymen and/or used to decorate certain aspects of a church on the third Sunday of Advent, known as “Gaudete” Sunday (Latin for “Rejoice”). As we look at the rose candle lit on the Advent wreath, we are reminded that the Advent season is almost over and that Christmas is near. If we have spent Advent by preparing our hearts as well as our homes to celebrate the birthday of Jesus, then indeed we should rejoice with the Church!
The final item states that instead of Mass in Spanish on Dec. 24, that it will be offered on Dec. 25 at 2 p.m. and to remember Christ on Christmas Day!

Saint John the Evangelist Annual Financial Report Fiscal Year Ended August 31, 2016 Dear Parishioners of St. John’s, On behalf of the Finance Council, we share with you the financial highlight report for the fiscal year ended August 31, 2016. The full financial statements of the Parish were recently presented to and approved by the members of the Finance Council and submitted to the Archdiocese Finance Office. The financial condition of the Parish continues to improve. Under the prudent and diligent management of our Pastor and guided by the Finance Council the outstanding debt to the Archdiocese has been further reduced. Weekly contributions including Parish Pay, which fund our normal operating expenses declined by approximately 6% from an average of $19,400 to $18,200. Participation in Parish Pay, our electronic giving program has also decreased 5% over the past 12 months. Parish Pay significantly helps to maintain a steady cash flow particularly during vacation months and stormy weekends. We would encourage you if you are not using Parish Pay to please consider doing so. We will continue as has been done in the past to seek ways to reduce our normal operating expenses. Some of the major improvements and safety projects completed this year included the reconfiguration of the school entrance and offices for our Faith Formation program, new front and side door steps for the Our Lady Queens of Angels Chapel and the installation of a second sidewalk and lighting from the Church to the School parking lots. Our beautiful new Prayer Garden was dedicated by His Eminence, Timothy Cardinal Dolan on June 18, 2016. This project, which began in 2013, was completely funded through the generous donations from parishioners and corporations as well as a significant amount of pro bono services provided by local contractors and companies. Our Parish continues to make significant progress toward repaying its outstanding liabilities owed to the Archdiocese. In 2012, the debt was over $2.5 million, which consisted of loans and outstanding bills from the Parish and the former school. Since last year, the debt has been reduced by $140,000 in principal payments on interest-accruing debt. Our debt is now slightly less than $1.4 million. Total debt includes $587,338 that the Archdiocese has agreed to restructure by reclassifying to subvention or contingent liabilities in 2015. The subvention balance does not accrue interest and is subject to repayment only in the event that the Parish were to receive a sizable unrestricted donation, bequest or sale of a property where repayment would not compromise the ongoing financial operation of the Parish. In addition to the financial oversight of the Parish, the Finance Council also reviews the activity reports from the following Parish sponsored programs: CYO Basketball, Food Pantry, Respect Life and the Rosary Altar Society. Their respective summary reports are also included in the bulletin this week. Your continued participation and support of these programs is greatly appreciated. Finally, the Finance Council would like to thank all those who continue to so generously support your Parish. We would also like to thank Father Phil Caruso for his leadership and oversight of the spiritual and financial well-being of the entire Saint John’s community. Respectfully, Bill Donohue – Parish Trustee/ Chairman of Finance Committee Ed Welch – Parish Trustee Eileen A. Podlovits, CPA – Parish Accountant

St. John’s Food Pantry
St. John’s Food Pantry is available to anyone living in Putnam County and is in need of food. We are open Friday's from 10am to 12 noon. Over the past twelve months we have helped feed over 20,000 adults, children and senior citizens.
The winter months (November through March) we see the heaviest demand, and on average, we serve 1856 clients.
The St. John’s Food Pantry receives an annual Food Grant (HPNAP) from the Regional Food Bank of New York that
helps defray the cost of running the food pantry. This year’s grant is $22,000. The food bank’s grant covers about 39% of the yearly cost of operating the pantry. The balance of funds, approximately $34,000, comes from contributions from
individual parishioners, corporations, fundraisers, foundation grants and through the direct support of St. John the Evangelist Parish.
During the winter months as we approach Thanksgiving and Christmas, when our demand significantly increases, the need for donations of food and cash also increases. Cash is needed to meet our weekly purchases of milk, bread, and
other supplies which are not covered by the food grant.
We greatly appreciate the support of our parishioners for, without you, it would be impossible to continue this mission.
