From the pastor… Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time In today’s first reading we heard “…all who keep the Sabbath free from profanation and hold to my covenant, them I will bring to my holy mountain and make joyful in my house of prayer.” “Profane” is defined in Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary as “to treat something sacred with abuse, irreverence or contempt; to dese-crate”. The 3rd commandment says to “Remember to keep holy the Sabbath day. Six days you shall labor and do all your work; but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God; in it you shall not do any work (Exodus 20:8-10; Deut. 5:12-15). Sunday, is the day on which Jesus rose from the dead is celebrated as the holy day by Christians. Thus the Christian observance of Sunday fulfills the commandment to remember and keep holy the Sabbath day. To desecrate or the profanation of a tombstone in a cemetery would be to kick it over or break it. What is it to keep the Sabbath free from profanation? For us Catholics – we keep the Lord’s Day Holy by fulfilling His commandment to “Do this in remembrance of me.” The Mass is the perfect prayer whereby we nurture and nourish ourselves with the Word of God and with the Blessed Sacrament. Not to fulfill the Lord’s Commandments is called a sin. There are valid reasons to miss Mass on the Lord’s Day. It’s not a sin if you really can’t get there because, for example you are sick, a pandemic, ice & snow, you’re on vacation - and after checking, you discover there is no Mass available in that area, etc. Do you really believe that vacation at the beach, sports, and sleep are valid reasons to ignore the 3rd commandment? Shouldn’t you go to church to thank God for the ability to go on vacation? Isn’t there something wrong with someone who, during a pandemic, goes to work, goes to school, but doesn’t go to church? Pope Francis once said that people shouldn’t work on Sunday. Some people, like phy-sicians, really do have to work on the Lord’s Day. Sunday should be a family day. For the children of God - a family of faith, this should begin in church. This would be a benefit to the individual, the family, and our culture. “…all who keep the Sabbath free from profanation and hold to my covenant, them I will bring to my holy mountain and make joyful in my house of prayer.” Hope to see you in church. Next Sunday is the Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time. The readings at Mass will be taken from Isaiah 22:19-23, Romans 11:33-36, and Matthew 16:13-20. The RCIA Team – (not the new candidates) will have a planning meeting this Wednesday, August 19 at 6:45 p.m. in the Knights of Columbus room. The Youth Group will meet next Sunday, Aug, 23rd, 6-8 p.m. in the new social hall. This really is the Last Call to join the RCIA Program and to learn more about the Catholic Faith. This program is for potential converts as well as for baptized Catholics (18 years old and older) who never received the Sacrament of Reconciliation, the Eucharist or were not Confirmed. Please call Raquel, the Director of the RCIA -704-880-7940 or Fr. Kessler at 704-681-4860. Faith Formation Classes – will be offered to those who would like to have their children receive their First Confession, First Holy Communion or Confirmation next spring. Please see the next page for further information. Next Sunday really is the last chance to sign up. We need to do our best to plan for social distancing in the classrooms. Masks are recommended but won’t be required. The students and teachers temperatures will be taken prior to class. If you have any reservations, it is recommended that you wait until next year
