June 26– Corpus Christi Deuteronomy 8:2-3, 14b-16a; 1 Corinthians 10:16-17;

John 6:51-58 You are what you eat There is no meeting or feast where there is nothing to eat and drink. It seems that we human beings cannot relate to each other without going into what is most basic in our daily life: food. That is where we can be together regardless of the differences among ourselves. We all eat. When we share a meal, it seems that disagreements vanish and we find a common ground where we can all be friends and brothers and sisters. In the gospel stories we see how Jesus is frequently seen eating with his disciples, at his friends’ houses, in

the field multiplying bread and fish for the crowds so that all can eat. Often Jesus speaks of the kingdom of God in terms of a great banquet or wedding feats. And when Jesus was raised from the dead, again he breaks bread with his friends and even cooks fish for them on the lake shore. The image of a meal, so familiar for everyone regardless of race or culture, is something we can all

understand and appreciate. It does not threaten anyone and invites all. On the other hand, it is often said that we are what we eat. That is, in a certain way, a scientific explanation of food, but Jesus takes advantage of it to make real and vivid for us his self-giving in the Eucharist. It is very appropriate for Jesus to want to use a meal to give himself to us totally. Giving oneself body and soul is the most perfect and complete self surrender. And that is what Jesus does in the Eucharist: he gives us his Body and Blood so that we can become what we eat. We thus become the Body and Blood of Jesus for others. If we are the Body and Blood of Jesus we will give ourselves totally to him in love and in him and out of love, we will give ourselves to others. That will require a total self-denial, an extraordinary flexibility to give up our own things and our own plans to pay attention to the needs of others, a passionate availability to go wherever necessary and to do whatever is necessary. It is neither easy nor comfortable. But it is the only thing that would give us true life, because it feeds us and feeds the world. For reflection In which ways can I be bread for others? How do I go closer to the Eucharist? What are our home meals like?
