BLESSING OF FATHERS

God and Father of all crea on, we come before you today with humble hearts. You are our model of a loving father. When we fail and fall short of your expecta ons, you are always there at the end of the day with open arms, ready to heal the cuts and scrapes of the day and to encourage us to try again and not to give up. We hold up these men in our midst who act in the world as fathers to their children or models of fathers for others. Bless them in their moments of doubt and frustra on with their children. Give them warm and open hearts to forgive failures. Provide them with the words needed for encouragement and perseverance. We ask all this in the name of Jesus. Amen. LPI - Author Dean Daniels

DORCUS QUILTERS will not meet during the months of July and August. The next mee ng will be Tuesday, September 4th.

The Mysteries of the Rosary, Chapter Six: The Annuncia on, con nued… Just about everyone knows the importance of nonverbal communica on. A smile or a frown, a handshake or a fist, an embrace or crossed arms, say a lot more than our words can. I think the people who know most about nonverbal communica on are people in love. For spouses, the most in mate form of communica on says, “I love you and I am giving myself totally to you” without any words at all. God is more in love with us than any human being can possibly be. And nonverbal communica on is important with Him, too.

That’s one reason we take so many different postures at Mass. As soon as we come into the church, many of us sign ourselves with holy water, reminding ourselves of our bap sm, implicitly thanking God for that sacrament, and acknowledging to Him that we belong to Him. Then we genuflect—a sign of respect for a higher authority, in this case, God—before we go into the pew. Then we kneel (if we can), a message of humility and reverence. When Mass starts, we stand as a sign of respect. Next, during the First Reading, the Psalm and the Second Reading, we sit as a sign of a en veness. Then we stand again for the Gospel, acknowledging to God and one another that the Gospels deserve special respect because they are the heart of God’s revela on to us, revealing Jesus Christ. We stand again for the Creed and the intercessions, signaling our respect for the Faith and prayer, and then sit for the prepara on of the gi s. Si ng can help us relax and think about what inten ons we would like to offer up along with Christ’s sacrifice on the altar to God the Father. Then we kneel in reverence for Jesus Christ, who is ac ng in the person of the priest to offer up His body and blood for the salva on of the world and all our good inten ons. A er Holy Communion, we kneel in humble thanksgiving for so great a gi . Then for the prayer a er Communion, the final blessing and dismissal we stand again, signaling our a en veness as well as our readiness to take the Gospel out into the world. Having a certain amount of common postures in public liturgies like the Eucharist fosters unity and a common understanding through a shared nonverbal vocabulary. But there is s ll room for varia on. For example, when we are praying—out loud or in silence—we can hold our hands in various postures. At this point, we may be just doing what seems most comfortable, or in imita on of what other people are doing or what we have been taught to do. At the same me—whether we are aware of it or not—our hands can signal various things to others and to ourselves. For many people, the hands held with palms together means reverence. I also some mes think of this as loving eagerness for God, like we want to dive into Him like we would into a cool lake on a hot summer day. Other people like to pray with their hands clasped together and fingers entwined. This can speak of awareness of God within, of His indwelling in our hearts and souls and mind, and of in mate union with Him, in fact or in desire. S ll other people like to pray with hands held apart and palms up. This can speak of being open to God and wan ng to receive from Him and give or surrender to Him. When we come up to receive Holy Communion, we can make a throne for God with our hands, or open our mouths in humility, like a helpless baby bird being fed by its parent, and indica ng that we don’t feel worthy to handle the Body of Christ with our own hands. There are even more possibili es for variety in how we pray with our bodies when we are alone with God. We can kneel, lie flat on the ground, sit in a chair, walk, stand, or even lay in bed. Different people find different postures more conducive to prayer. And different postures may be a be er fit for our prayers at different mes. Thank God that there are so many ways to pray without words! Of course, communica ng nonverbally with God is different than doing so with our fellow human beings. To them, what we say with our looks, gesture, posture and so on can reveal something. That isn’t true with God. He already knows everything, so our nonverbal praying is for our benefit, not his. It can help us enter more deeply into prayer and be be er disposed to receive what God wants to give us from His heart of perfect love. Whatever the Blessed Virgin Mary may have been doing when the Archangel Gabriel appeared to her, we can be sure that she was humbly kneeling in her heart. May our Blessed Mother pray for all of us, that however we pray, with our whole body we will be saying, like she did, that we want everything that God wants. With love in Christ, Father Rudolph

Saint of the Day

Saint Juliana Falconieri

Juliana was born in Italy in 1270 to wealthy parents. They built the magnificent church of the Annuncia on in Florence. Her father was elderly when she was born, and she was the only child of her parents’ marriage. A er her father’s death, Juliana’s mother was helped in raising her by her uncle, Alexis Falconieri. He himself was a saint, one of the seven founders of the Order of Servites of Mary. Juliana grew up with a determina on to devote her life to God, and at the age of fi een, a er instruc on by her uncle, she was given the habit of the Servites and became a ter ary (lay member) of that Order. She con nued to live the spirituality of the Servites in her own home. Her mother, who had once urged Juliana to prepare for marriage, was so impressed by the holiness of her life that she eventually placed herself under her daughter’s spiritual direc on. While living at home, Juliana gathered a group of the ladies of Florence and led them to move as a community into the Grifoni Palace there. A er her mother died, when Juliana was thirty-four, she asked to be admi ed to the Palace as a servant. The other women soon insisted that instead she become their abbess. Juliana wrote up a Rule for the women to live under, which was recognized by Pope Mar n V over a hundred years later, and they were recognized as Servite nuns. Juliana’s contemporaries described her as a very conscien ous and hardworking superior, living a simple life, full of charity and eager to give whatever help she could to others. Her many penances and fasts impaired her health, but she lived to the age of seventy-one. She is buried beneath the altar in the church of the Annuncia on in Florence. Saint Juliana of Falconieri, pray for us!
