CHURCH OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD FROM OUR PASTOR
NICODEMUS IS AN INTERESTING CHARACTER. He appears in the Fourth Gospel in the third chapter as a hesitant inquirer who is captivated by Jesus’ teaching, but because he is a man of means and power, doesn’t want to jeopardize either by being associated with this preacher/wonderworker. So he goes to him “at night” to get clarification about the Good News Jesus has come to proclaim. Later in the book, he offers a public, but tepid defense of Jesus to the religious leaders. Finally, after the death of Jesus, he joins Joseph of Arimethia in broad daylight to assist with the burial of Jesus, bringing spices and ointments weighing in the hundreds of pounds, when the customary weight for a burial was calculated in ounces! He’s come a long way since those furtive nightly visits and now stands bravely in the light. What does it mean to come into the light? Perhaps it starts with honesty about ourselves. We have to lay down our defenses, “our side of the story”, and confess ourselves in good old-fashioned Catholic tradition, telling the truth about who we are. It involves admitting that we’re afraid of our darkness, ashamed about some of our choices, knowing that we can be petty and self-serving at times. We may be unwilling to love our enemies or forgive those who injure us. Our compassion may be undersized and we shrink from self-sacrifice. We don’t like risking our comfort and security, which most acts of goodness and service require. We prefer the darkness to the light. In the darkness we can pretend that we’re better people and feel better about ourselves without having to change. But once we come into the light, as Nicodemus realized, things have to change. We must change. The good news is, Jesus makes such change possible, even desirable. And we become who we’ve longed to be. God so loved the world just for this. But first, we should answer two questions: Which truths are hardest to admit about ourselves; and what kind of person do we long to be? We’ve received $82,435 in pledges toward our overall CSA goal of $106,769. That means we’ve covered the diocesan assessment of $49,449 with $ 32,986 left over to address our parish project of $57,320, which is designated to cover the costs of the technology upgrade for all the buildings on our campus. EVERY DOLLAR THAT IS PLEDGED FROM HERE ON IN REMAINS AT GOOD SHEPHERD. Please join in our success if you haven’t made your pledge yet so we can commence the improvements we plan over the summer vacation and have all the classrooms up to snuff when Religious Education classes resume. Letters with pledge envelopes will be sent out in April or you can call the office to make a pledge.
Have a good week. Fr. Glenn ------------------------------------------------------
