church of the holy sepulchre monument in doctrine change

10
Mammana, 1 Of the many holy and sacred spaces found in Jerusalem, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher stands as monument to the change in the fundamental Christian doctrine and belief. The architecture of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher embodies the change in how Christians viewed sacred space, showing their rather newfound interest in establishing Christian sacred space. The shift from emphasizing “the self” or individual forms of sacred practice to a specific place shaped the Christian beliefs to its core. Initially, Christians had thought themselves to have a piety that required no place, but rather about worshipping through the self. Holy places were not considered to be a concept for early Christians. A spiritual religion like Christianity had “no room for holy places” (Markus 1994: 259). It was not until Constantine and his building projects that the process for sacralization of the “holy places” could begin. Ritual processions then began to revolve around these monuments, in particular the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. This in turn helps bring the narratives of biblical events into close relations with the physical space (Markus 1994: 265). This gives us an understanding of how it is that something physical like the Church of the Holy Sepulcher can change Christian beliefs and views. There is the circumstance of traditions which Christianity borrowed from Judaism, while developing its own, that show their interest in creating Christian sacred space. There was a need to borrow myths from Judaism to help establish the Christian sacred space. It was deemed rather important that the land in where the Holy Sepulcher was to be built had previous affiliations with sacred events. Therefore there is an emphasis to legitimize the space in which the Holy Sepulcher is constructed. The Church of the Holy Sepulcher was built so that it could be tied to the burial of Adam. There was also the shifting of the binding of Isaac so that the Church could
