Ash WednesdayThis Wednesday is Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent. This is the part of the Church year during which the faithful prepare for the risen Christ at Easter. On Ash Wednesday the curse of Adam, mortality and death, is recalled by the placing of ashes upon the Christian’s head with the prayer, “Remember that we are dust and to dust we shall return”, or “Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel.” The Ashes are applied in the form of a cross, which signifies the Christian resurrection with Christ on Easter Sunday. Lent is the forty day period before Easter, excluding Sundays, which ends on Holy Saturday, the day before Easter Sunday.

Fast and AbstinenceIt is a traditional doctrine of Christian spirituality that a constituent part of repentance, of turning away from sin and back to God, includes some form of penance, without which the Christian is unlikely to remain on the narrow path and be saved. Christ Himself said that His disciples would fast once He had departed (Lk. 5:35). The general law of penance, therefore, is part of the law of God for all human beings.

Fasting and abstainingToday, abstaining applies to all Catholics age 14 and older and means that they must not eat meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all Fridays in Lent. Fasting applies to all Catholics ages 18 to 59 and means they must eat only one full meal on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, which means no snacks between meals! However, two smaller meals, such as breakfast and lunch, can be eaten in addition to the one full meal as long as they don’t equal the one full meal if combined. Before Vatican II, every Friday of the year – Lent or not – was a day of abstinence from meat.

Please consider taking the season of Lent seriously by following these great practices of our faith. In showing acts of mercy toward others and making specific sacrifices for our Lord, we will be turning away from sin and being faithful to the Gospel.

Be assured of my prayers for a grace filled lent.

Fr. Grieco

They say they didn’t move all the way from the United States to an obscure town in Italy just to end up as the latest media sensation. But there they are, topping charts with the CD Benedicta, a dozen or so men who wanted to withdraw from the world to focus on God, and are now known all over the world for the chants they sing every day. The CBS News show Sunday Morning featured New England native Father Cassian Fol-som and his fellow Benedictines in Norcia, the birthplace of St. Benedict. Father Folsom left his secular life in 2000 to reestablish monastic life in a place where it had ironically not existed since 1810.

About the only thing Father Folsom did not leave behind when he went behind clois-tered walls, the report noted, was his love of music. The Monks of Norcia have tried to restore traditional Bene-dictine life. As they became “proficient” at what they do, the monks made private recordings for friends. And then they got “discovered.”

Now, with the help of De Montfort Music, they have taken their place alongside the Monks of Silos, Spain, whose recordings back in

the 1990s exposed millions of listeners around the world to the beauty of Gregorian chant. And that, even more than hitting number one on the Classical Billboard Chart, is what makes the Monks of Norcia happy. “It shows there is something in the music that attracts people, across a huge spectrum,” Father Folsom said. “And that something, I think, is a desire for what people today call ‘spirituality,’ something more than the everyday lives that they lead.”

I visited the monks in Norcia 3 years ago. This small community of priests and brothers have revived the mo-nastic tradition in the birthplace of Saint Benedict and his twin sister St. Scholastica. These monks, most of whom are from the U.S. have been charged with the care of the Basilica of San Benedetto, which sits in the main square of the small town of Norcia. The basilica is in fact built over the birthplace of the two saints. I had the opportunity to visit the room where they were born, a small room located in the cellar of the basilica.

Working alongside Father Folsom who is from Connecticut, there are priests and brothers from Texas, Illi-nois, Arizona, South Carolina and Ohio. These men have gone deep to the roots of monasticism and engage fully in a life of ora et labora…prayer and work…as outlined by St. Benedict in his Rule. They have built a brewery and produce a dark beer and a light beer called Birra Nursia. The brewery is part of their commit-ment to work, while also providing a source of income. Their life of prayer is enhanced by their work reviv-ing the beauty of Gregorian chant in a traditional monastic setting. How inspiring that this great revival is be-ing undertaken by a group of monks who have left behind the New World…. and gone back to strengthen the roots from which their order began. Perhaps there is a lesson there for us!

May Almighty God bless us, protect us from all evil, and lead us into everlasting life. Amen.

BABY BOTTLE CAMPAIGN

Don’t Forget Your Baby Bottle! The Holy Spirit Pro-Life Committee is hosting a Baby Bottle Fundraiser to benefit The Life Center of Long Island. The Life Center is a crisis pregnancy center that counsels women and men who are experiencing an unplanned pregnancy. Did you know that they provide: free pregnancy tests ,maternity housing with eligibility requirements, medical care, referrals, cribs, car seats, diapers and ALL other baby items that are needed. We are asking that you pick up a baby bottle and fill it with your change. Most importantly, we are asking you to recite the prayer on the bottle. The prayer attached to the bottle will enable the counselors at The Life Center to say just the right words a mother or father may need to hear. It especially opens a mother’s heart to accept the truth. We believe these

prayers lead abortion-minded women to call The Life Center in the first place.

Please return the bottles on February 20th & 21st Let us pray with our whole heart for the lives of our unborn children.
