Religious Education
It has been another good year for our Religious Education students of and we are trying hard to tweak things and make it even better for next year. I thank all involved; students, parents and teachers and we look forward to a continued relationship. The children come to Mass and are doing well in class. I looked over the 6th grade final exam and I am confident that many 12th grade Catholic School students would not be able to pass this test. This is a trib-ute to our teachers and our program! REGISTRATION is now open, please register as soon as possible to make it easier for yourselves in September. For information send Kathy an email at:{[email protected]}
Eagle Scout Project
A huge congratulation is in order for Connor Garvin and all the Boy Scouts for a newly com-pleted Eagle Scout project. They painted half of the Religious Education hallway, cleaned it up and enhanced the entire area. It looks new and beautiful. Well done! Thanks for all you do for the parish!
Sale of Convent
We are in the process of selling the convent building to the Knights of Columbus. This sale will benefit our parish and our Knights of Columbus Council. Contrary to some rumors and gossip from people who have nothing better to do, everything was done the proper way. Be-fore the vote was taken everyone was fully aware of the details of the sale. The ballot was conducted in secret, in accordance with the rules of the Knights of Columbus, and 70 mem-bers voted for the purchase and 9 voted against it. 100% of the proceeds of the sale of the convent will go directly to Holy Spirit parish and the Diocese does not get one cent! Some-times in life, things just take time. It takes time because the Diocese is trying to protect the people of the parish. Because the Knights will now have a home and because the leadership of the Knights has now improved with John Thomas as the Grand Knight, membership is al-ready increasing. When I arrived at the parish 5 years ago, as pastor, I promised that I would make every single decision based on what is best for our parish. I have done that and will continue to do so. I am aware that I have my critics but my loyalty is not to my critics but to the good people of our parish. I thank all of my supporters and ask that we continue to pray for the needs of our Church and for the needs of all of God’s people. Thank you and God Bless you!
Deacon Lachlan

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of Pentecost. In church terms a solemnity is the biggest of all feasts and a great cause for celebra-tion. Pentecost is sometimes called the birthday of the Church…..because Pentecost is when the apostles went out among the people and began spreading Jesus’ message….thus es-tablishing the beginning of the Church. Pentecost (Greek for 50th day) is celebrated 50 days after Easter, and marks the day that the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles while they were hiding behind locked doors following Jesus’ resurrection. After receiving the power and gifts of the Holy Spirit, the apostles immediately went out and preached Jesus’ message to everyone…….even to those who spoke other languages.
Pentecost was originally a Jewish feast that concluded the 50 days of Passover and it was a celebration of the end of the barley har-
vest and the beginning of the wheat harvest. The Jewish people at Pentecost also celebrate the gift of the law to Moses on Mt. Sinai.
The symbols of Pentecost are wind, fire and a dove. The first symbol….wind…..is taken from the noise the apostles heard as the Spirit descended upon them. Then after the wind came fire…… flames appeared and rested upon the heads of each of the apostles. The dove we know serves as a symbol of the Holy Spirit from the story of Jesus’ baptism in the Gospel: “After Jesus was baptized, he came up from the water and behold, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove coming upon him”. Here we see a painting of the Blessed Mother with the Apostles. Mary prayed with them for the nine days between Ascension and Pentecost……in practical terms …the first ever novena. Pentecost is also…of course….the solemnity of our parish patron the Holy Spirit. This is a big year at our parish as we prepare for our quasquicentennial celebrations. (If you don’t know what it means I know you haven’t been reading the bulletin…). However we have another great celebration coming up before that starts. It is of course our Family Festival. This is a really exciting, fun filled four days in the life of our par-ish and our whole community. What makes it such a great event is that so many people are part of the celebration…..and as you read this we are only about 10 days away from the opening. Please support the festival in whichever way you can. Everyone can pray for a successful event….for good weather…for a time of relaxation….coming together with family and friends. If you can…please buy a raffle ticket…or a few raffle tickets…..the more we sell…the bigger the prize…and if possible… please take a sponsorship sign….there are a number of levels beginning at $75. If you can volunteer for an hour or two….sign up. We will find a spot for you. Come join us…..it is a lot of fun! On that first Pentecost the Apostles were filled with the Holy Spirit. Each of us through baptism and confir-mation are also filled with the power of the Holy Spirit. Like the Apostles we can also do great things……. if we accept this wonderful gift. May Almighty God bless us, protect us from all evil, and lead us into everlasting life. Amen

Sunday Scripture Reflection
PARISH OFFERING The collection for last week,
Sunday, May 13th, 2018 was $10,438. Your kindhearted generosity to
Holy Spirit Church is very much appreciated.
Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who share their God-given gifts and talents through our parish ministries and community organizations, intent on serving our brothers and sisters in need.
St. Paul reminds us today that all of our gifts have their source in the Holy Spirit and that those gifts are given “for the common good.” What gifts are
mine to share?
May 20, 2018 Pentecost Sunday Today we celebrate the “birthday of the Church!” Pen-
tecost is described in the first reading from the Acts of the Apos-tles. But before the great driving wind and tongues of fire em-powering the Disciples, the Holy Spirit had already arrived. The Gospel for today’s Mass during the day is from John 20. Jesus appears to the fearful disciples after His resurrection. He first speaks a message of calm. “Peace be with you.” The apostles “rejoiced when they saw the Lord.” When the enthusiastic re-sponse settles down, Jesus “breathed on them and said to them ‘Receive the Holy Spirit.’”
This action is Trinitarian, and it has happened before. If you turn your Bible back to the beginning, you’ll read: “The Lord God formed man out of the clay of the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life, and so many became a living being” (Genesis 2:7). In the Garden of Eden, we see God’s first, original covenant with man. The breath of life signifies that origi-nal indwelling of grace, the special state of likeness and friend-ship with God before the Fall. Here now, in this locked room, the Apostles receive the long-awaited promise: the very breath of God, new life, a new covenant.
In the pairing of these two readings—the Pentecost experience in Acts and the breath of Jesus in John’s Gospel —we see that the coming of the Holy Spirit is not only an empower-ing, it is an indwelling. We have each received the breath of grace in our baptism. It is confirmed, strengthened, and deep-ened in each reception of the sacraments. If we persevere in vir-tue, the Spirit of God is alive in us, inspiring our actions of love. This Pentecost Sunday, how is the breath of God alive in you?
