Pastor’s Page
Dear Friends:
Allison Marzano and Victoria McGuigan were acknowledged last week at the 9:30 a.m. Mass, for their role in the
Family Mass the past seven years. They are “poster teens” for what a Family Mass should be. The purpose of this
Mass is to invite our young people to take an active role in our Catholic faith by participating at weekly Mass. By
participating we learn, by learning we grow, by growing we get closer to God, and as we get closer to God, we
become better people. Victoria and Allison did all of this by making a commitment to God to participate in the
Family Mass. Victoria played the flute beautifully and was a lector, strongly proclaiming the word of God. Allison
took a leadership role by leading the Family Mass Band playing the keyboard, and also reading the word of God at
Mass. Allison and Victoria are very talented young ladies. They earned exceptional grades in High School and will
now bring all their talents to their colleges. We will continue to pray for them, and hope they come back for
Mass whenever they are home from school; they are certainly welcome!
In addition to celebrating the graduation of Allison and Victoria, we also celebrated a baptism last week at the
Family Mass. Jordan Eisenberg, now a 14-year-old convert to the Catholic faith, was baptized with his wonderful
family attending and participating. Jordan’s Dad, Dan, first called the rectory a year ago inquiring about his son’s
hope of becoming Catholic. After Bob Hodgson, our Director of Religious Education, met with them to get the
preliminary information, we all worked together to make it happen. Jordan worked hard and completed all
assignments and requirements asked of him. He did this with a great attitude and a smile on his face. The most
important requirement is a yearning to know Jesus Christ. Jordan will continue the process and be Confirmed
with his classmates on October 19th here at Holy Spirit Church.
Religious Education
For starters, we have two very important dates:
First Holy Communion for 2nd Graders is Saturday, September 19th at 12:00 P.M.
Confirmation for 9th graders is Monday, October 19th at 4:00 P.M.
As far as religious education for grades K – 8, we will review the New Hyde Park School District’s plans for the
school year and make a decision based on what we think is best for our young people. We are planning on having
class, but we will be meeting with our teachers to discuss. We will keep you posted.
Our Loyal Parishioners!!
Although we do spend much time with our young people with Family Mass, youth group and religious education,
it is our older parishioners that I sincerely thank for your support for SO MANY years. You are all the backbone of
this parish. Without your prayers and support, the parish would not be where it is today. First at our baptism, and
more fully, at our Confirmation, we make a promise to God. The promise is to live the Gospel as best we can. The
promise is to be faithful and honest. The promise is to be generous, and people of integrity. The promise is to
support each other, God’s holy Church and the less fortunate. You have done all this for many years, and have
done it faithfully. I thank you for the love and generosity you share with our parish and for fulfilling your
baptismal promises.

Reflection Sunday, August 16, 2020 Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Lec. 118) 1) Isaiah 56:1, 6-7 2) Romans 11:13-15, 29-32 3) Matthew 15:21-28
FOCUS: God’s grace and mercy are promised to all.
The readings today wrestle with the questions of who is in and out. When it comes to God’s grace, who will receive it? We learn that all who accept the gift of faith are incorporated into the covenant relationship with God.
LITURGY OF THE WORD
The Lord speaks through Isaiah, giving his promise that all who hold to [his] covenant will be brought to his holy mountain, In the second reading, Saint Paul tells the Gentiles that God delivered all to disobedience, that he might have mercy upon all. In the Gospel, a Canaanite woman asks Christ to have pity on her, for her daughter is tormented by a demon. In spite of initial rejection, the woman perseveres in faith and Jesus heals her daughter.

Announcements
HOLY SPIRIT SOCIAL MINISTRY
Thank You!
The Holy Spirit Social Ministry wishes to thank all of the organizations and parishioners who
donated food and money to the food pantry during this ongoing pandemic. The Knights of
Columbus and the Columbiettes held food drives and collected money for the pantry. The Altar
Rosary Society members made a large donation to the pantry. The Sisters of Mercy through
Sr. Ann Horgan made a generous donation to pay rent for a needy neighbor. State Farm,
represented by the Peter E. Mathison Agency, Inc., contributed a large donation to the food
pantry. The Cellini Lodge # 2206, Sons and Daughters of Italy in America held a food drive to
benefit the pantry. The Saint Vincent de Paul Society (SVdP) is an ongoing contributor to the
Social Ministry providing supermarket gift cards monthly, buying Metro Cards to distribute to
our needy neighbors when needed for doctor visits, etc. They also assist with rent, utility bills,
doctor bills, as well as clothing and furniture through the SVdP store.
In addition to these organizations we are blessed to have some of the most generous
parishioners in the Diocese. Week in and week out our church family donates food, cash and
other items to the pantry. During this pandemic everyone has been very generous with their
donations. Any and all donations go directly to our needy neighbors.
Again, we say thank you, and God bless you for all your generosity and good work.
Holy Spirit’s “10th Annual Oldies Concert”
Holy Spirit’s Annual Oldies Concert, which is usually held in March,
was canceled this year due to the pandemic.
At this time, a new date has not yet been announced,
but we hope to reschedule it in the Spring of 2021.
Stay tuned for more details.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul Long Island (SVDPLI) Friends of the Poor 5K Walk/Run
This year, due to COVID-19, the annual 5K Walk/Run will be virtual. Participants can walk, run, bike, or swim on their own, or with a small group of friends/family, any time during the week of September 26 - October 3, 2020. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul sponsors the 5K Walk/Run to raise awareness about poverty on Long Island and raise funds to help our neighbors in need.
