From The Pastor Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, “For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope.” Jeremiah 29:11 I was standing in line at the grocery store. In front of me, a woman had just paid for her groceries with a credit card and was pressing the green button to complete the electronic purchase. But it didn’t go through. Again it wouldn’t work. The checker started pushing it herself. Fi- nally, it worked. By this time I am beginning to fidget. I had been to the deli, where they had mis- takenly tried to sell me too much at too high a price. I noticed. I had frozen food in my hands and I still had to pick up a prescription. I moved for- ward in line. Now the dear checker was sick and proceeded to cough as delicately as she could. It’s hard to work when you are sick. Fortu- nately, I didn’t have too much to buy and we fin- ished the purchase. I still had to fill the tank with gas and get the frozen food home before it thawed. Quickly scooting out of the store, I stopped at the gas station and with great re- lief returned home. But then I remembered. I for- got the prescription. So much for the best laid plans. What are our plans for this fall? The leaves are going to come down, whether we like it or not. It is going to get chillier. It was snowing in the moun- tains of Montana yester- day. Do we bring the car in to get it serviced? Do we make sure the kids still fit into their coats? Are the rakes and shovels in good shape? Do we have to trim down the garden soon? Are we in the “pick up and put away” mode? Are we plan- ning to attend the next football game? You get the idea. Where does God fit into all of this? God’s plans for us include hope and welfare. I once heard at seminary that God’s overall plan for us is salvation through his son, Jesus Christ our Lord. How that works out is a daily walk with God, listening and learning and trust- ing and, yes, hoping. As we rake and service and shop and trim and even fidget in line, may we not forget to ask God to lead us in all things. As we meet health challenges, God is with us. As we face changes that worry us, God is still planning for our welfare and not for harm. So in the love of God, have a hopeful October. In Christ, Blessings, Pastor Donna Pastor Donna Dohrmann

is a monthly publi-

to the members

Lutheran Church

of the Cross,

to inform and

From The Pastor Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, “For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope.” Jeremiah 29:11 I was standing in line at the grocery store. In front of me, a woman had just paid for her groceries with a credit card and was pressing the green button to complete the electronic purchase. But it didn’t go through. Again it wouldn’t work. The checker started pushing it herself. Fi-nally, it worked. By this time I am beginning to fidget. I had been to the deli, where they had mis-takenly tried to sell me too much at too high a price. I noticed. I had frozen food in my hands and I still had to pick up a prescription. I moved for-ward in line. Now the dear checker was sick and proceeded to cough as delicately as she could. It’s hard to work when you are sick. Fortu-nately, I didn’t have too much to buy and we fin-

ished the purchase. I still had to fill the tank with gas and get the frozen food home before it thawed. Quickly scooting out of the store, I stopped at the gas station and with great re-lief returned home. But then I remembered. I for-got the prescription. So much for the best laid plans.

What are our plans for this fall? The leaves are going to come down, whether we like it or not. It is going to get chillier. It was snowing in the moun-tains of Montana yester-day. Do we bring the car in to get it serviced? Do we make sure the kids still fit into their coats? Are the rakes and shovels in good shape? Do we have to trim down the garden

soon? Are we in the “pick up and put away” mode? Are we plan-ning to attend the next football game? You get the idea. Where does God fit into all of this? God’s plans for us include hope and welfare. I once heard at seminary that God’s overall plan for us is salvation through his son, Jesus Christ our Lord. “Trunk or Treat” in LCC Parking Lot! “Trunk or Treat” is a growing Halloween event around the nation, that is most of-

ten church-sponsored. In the past, our Merry-Go-Round Preschool has held similar events for its families. This year (and hopefully for years to come), the Outreach

Committee, in coordination with the Youth, will be hosting a “Trunk or Treat” event

in the parking lot (Fellowship Hall if inclement weather) at Lutheran Church of the Cross on Oct. 27th from 4pm to 5:30pm. The scenario is that LCC members/friends will gather and park their cars in the church parking lot (around the exterior). They open their trunks, or the backs of their vehicles, and decorate them. Most often they are in costume. Then they pass out candy, from their trunks, to children dressed in costumes. The event provides a safe family environment for trick or treaters.

All LCC members and friends are encouraged to participate (what a great way to enjoy the costumed children, for those of us who see few, if any, costumed children at our door) by decorating your trunk and wearing costumes (PLEASE: NO SCARY THEMES OR COSTUMES!), or by donating candy for distribution. Hot chocolate, warm apple cider and cookies will be served. Help will be needed so there will be plenty of opportunity to participate—a sign up sheet is available in the foyer. When it comes to decorating your vehicle, there are the obvious choices, like deco-rating for Halloween, using pumpkins, storybook themes and costumes, etc. We ask that participants not use scary items, like blood, bats, witches, spiders, mon-sters, or gore. It's a good idea anyway because so many of your trick or treaters will be preschoolers and toddlers. The best way to plan your trunk (or back of a vehicle) is to pick a theme. Think of it like dressing yourself in a costume. Sometimes you pick a theme and throw things together. Some ideas might include: An SUV which is '70's themed. Throw down some shag, hang a disco ball. The people can wear 'fro wigs and tie dye”. You could also do 50's, 60's or 80's too. Another idea is Mother Goose or you can dress as a clown and fill your trunk with balloons, or dress as a zookeeper and add lots of stuffed animals. The ideas are endless! Here are a few more: NASCAR Theme - Display all your souvenirs Harvest Theme Sports Theme (pick a sport) - Team displays are popular Popular Kid's Themes: Sesame Street, Dora the Explorer, Veggie Tales, Backyardigans (If you have kids and they're into a particular character you can use their stuff. Other kids will love it) Animal Themes - Stuffed animals count. Movie Themes (Keep the kids in mind though) Western Theme Camping-Out Theme Christmas (or other holiday) Theme Gone Fishing Theme Pirate Theme Please plan to participate (and/or attend) this wonderful family event. We are inviting the entire neighborhood, Highland Acres Elementary School and Merry-Go-Round Preschool. For more details, contact Tim Newman at the church or Ken Will (258-7127 or 226-5670).

Don't forget about a costume for yourself. The best and most interesting trunks have their owners dressed to match the theme.

Library Book Review Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline

Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline is the type of book that can change how you view a part of his-tory, one that you probably knew very little about, if at all. Based on factual parts of America’s history, Kline tells the story of how two or-phaned girls from different eras are able to form a friendship and help

each other. Orphan Train is a well-written book that captures the reader right away. It is written with alternating chapters that take place in Vivian’s past and the current time of 2011. Kline connects the storylines in a wonderful and memorable way that will leave you wanting to know more about the actual history of orphan trains and America’s not so happy past. Our own North Da-kota governor, Andrew Burke, was an orphan on the orphan train. If you enjoy reading historical fiction that is based on actual facts, this is a book that I think you will truly enjoy. I highly rec-ommend it!

Pastors Report: Pastor Donna

Over the past month, Tim and I have met to plan Confirmation. He is very dedicated to education in

this church and works hard to plan and implement learning opportunities. I am thankful to be work-

ing with him. I am also thankful for the Council members, who updated the congregation on the on-

going building addition. It is so important that we all are transparent and know what is happening

here at LCC. I believe ownership is the key to an active faith life. God calls us and we come in

hope and trust. I will soon begin pre-marital sessions with a couple who are getting married in the

Bottineau area. They live in Bismarck and are looking for a church. We are here to welcome. I con-

ducted the funeral for Don Senechal. His wife lives in Highland Acres and we were recommended to

them. It was my privilege to serve Don’s family and get to know them. Don’s funeral was held at the

UCC church because we are obviously under construction. Thank you to the committee who cheer-

fully served and to the UCC church, who welcomed us as sisters and brothers in Christ.

Several people have been in and out of the hospital lately. Even though you do not know all of their names, I ask that you keep them as a whole within your prayers. I will be in Medora (along with Art) from Sunday afternoon to Tuesday afternoon. I will return in time for Council. I am excited to have Wednesday night worship begin. Thank you to those who have planned, rehearsed and worked so hard to make this worship opportunity a reality. Especially, “thank you” to Shelby and Tim.

Pastoral Assistant Report: Tim Newman

Fusion Worship is ready. Tomorrow, Donna, Shelby and I will walk through some of the smaller lo-gistical things, but we are excited and ready to have another way to worship at LCC. According to the numbers on Sunday, as well as via email, I think we will have a decent group for Wednesday. I ask that you pray for this new service. Rally Sunday went well and I anticipate that Rally Wednesday will be no different. The potluck was delicious and the “Fusion” of desserts and bars on Wednesday will be great as well. It is fun having a congregation so vibrant! Confirmation will start next Wednes-day September 18

th at 6:45. As of now we have 17 kids. Youth group will also start on the 18

th of this

month. We plan to meet from 8:00 to 9:15pm. I finally found a contact for the Autumn Fest Parade and signed us up. We plan to walk and if you would like to join us please let me know. We need to be at the Capital at 9:30am. Along those lines, after chatting with Roger and Art yesterday, we have ordered some T-shirts with the new LCC logo on them to be worn for the parade, but also to sell to the congregation. Talk to me if you’re interested in purchasing one. The youth director’s Bible study has started again. We usually meet on Thursday afternoons. The Men’s Bible Study continues to meet the 1

st and 3

rd Thursday of the month at 7:00am. We have been following the lectionary for our

study. Yesterday my Grandmother passed away at the Good Samaritan home in Bismarck. I will be attending her funeral in Minot on Saturday and will not be here this Sunday.

Mark & Linda Nygard, parents of Matthew Nygard, will be with us on

Sunday, November 3, and Wednesday, November 6, 2013, sharing their experiences as missionaries of the ELCA and before that, the

ALC, off and on for 33 years. They have served congregations and institutions in Cameroun, Senegal, North Dakota, and most recently, Egypt. Mark directed the graduate program of Evangelical Theological Seminary in Cairo and Linda catalogued English volumes in the library. They were evacuated during the 2011 revolution and now return to the States to be nearer their families. Come and welcome Mark & Linda into our fellowship on Sunday, November 3rd and Wednesday, November 6th!

We want to say a big “THANK YOU” to all the LCC volunteers who delivered Meals-On-Wheels in August. Lutheran Church of the Cross could not be a part of this outreach in our community without your willingness to help! Jerry Delzer, Program Coordinator of Meals-On-Wheels, called to ask us to express his ap-preciation and thanks, also, to the drivers and helpers included in this year’s effort:
