From Fr. Joe Crossing to The Other Side: Heaven, Hell and Purgatory This week’s reading from the book of Wisdom is about death, and the Gospel about Jairus, the synagogue official , whose daughter was dying and appeals to Jesus for help. The Responsorial Psalm (Psalm 30) is a plea to God’s mercy for rescuing someone from the nether world. The first reading and the Gospel arouse in us the concern about death and what happens after death. The Catechism of the Catholic Church addresses the issue of God’s mercy for those who die. “All who die in God's grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven. The Church gives the name Purgatory to this final purification of the elect, which is entirely different from the punishment of the damned.” (Catechism 1030-1031) There are two degrees of sin that affect the soul. Sin that kills the life of grace within a soul is labeled mortal sin. Sin that only injures or disfigures the soul is called venial sin. The Church professes that those who die without the least stain of sin or reparation due to sin, go directly to Heaven. Those who die with un-repented mortal sin on their soul, go directly to Hell. However, there are those who alt-hough in a state of grace, do have venial sin, or penance yet to be paid for forgiven sin on their soul. It is for those in the state of venial sin, or the “middle ground”, that Purgatory is intended. When we die, we undergo what is called the particular, or individual, judgment. At the end of time, when Jesus returns, there will come the general judgment. With the particular judgement, souls al-ready know their fate. The possibilities of our particular judgement are heaven or hell, or purgatory. At the final judgement purgatory will no longer exist, and our fate for eternity will then be either heaven or hell. All of the souls in purgatory will be in heaven. The purification is necessary because nothing unclean can enter the presence of God in heaven (Rev. 21:27) and, while we may die with our mortal sins forgiven, there can still be many impurities in us, specifically venial sins and the temporal punishment due to sins already forgiven. We often imagine purgatory as a “place” with literal fires of purgation, but that is not the case. Pope Benedict, in talking about purgatory, describes it as a process. He says: “Purgatory is like a purifying fire burning inside a person, a painful experience of regret for one's sins… "The soul is aware of the immense love and perfect justice of God consequently suffers for not having responded correctly and perfectly to that love." Although the soul suffers in purgatory, it is also a place of great joy because one knows that when their purgation is complete, they will be in heaven. Souls in Purgatory can no longer gain merit for themselves to shorten their “time” in purgatory. However we can lessen their sufferings through our prayers and sacrifices for them, and gain indul-gences for them. That is why a funeral Mass and having Masses “said” and other prayers for the dead are important. It is part of the communion of saints where we are called upon to help each other to gain heaven, perfect union with God.
“ All the way to heaven is heaven, because Jesus said, “I am the way. “-St. Catherine of Sienna
