Transfiguration Catholic Church

Dear Parishioners, This week I would like to spend a little time on another aspect of our Lenten practice: PRAYER In prayer we turn to God, listen to his voice, and let him fill our hearts and guide us. During Lent, our prayer takes on a special tone; we are especially aware of our sins. We are attentive to Jesus, the suffering servant. We join in prayer for candidates and catechumens, and we pray for our own deeper conversion to the Lord. Many find it helpful to go beyond Sunday Mass and use Lent as a chance to broaden and deepen their spiritual life. Here are some suggestions: *Celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation *Attend Mass during the week *Read and pray with the Mass readings for each day *Pray the Liturgy of the Hours *Participate in a Bible Study or other parish offerings *Use one of the many Catholic devotionals available *Pray the Stations of the Cross, either individually or in our Parish *Pray the rosary *Spend time in Eucharistic Adorations *Do some extra spiritual reading Something for you to think about as we continue our Lenten journey. We congratulate Deacon Timothy Moore on being appointed by Bishop Michael Barber to the position of Bishop’s Representa-tive to the Deaconate and Director of Deacon Personnel. The Bishop has recognized what we already know, that Tim is a wonderful Deacon. Our parish is blessed with all our deacons. Yours in Christ, Fr. Mario L. Borges

Your Prayers Are Requested for the Repose of the Soul of: Eugene O’Brien (Husband of Lorraine O’Brien)

During Lent: Mass will begin without the usual procession into the church. We ask the community to be quiet and medi-tate in silence five minutes before Mass. We will have Stations of the Cross and Benediction on all the Fridays of Lent, 7:30p.m. at Transfiguration. Lent is also an invitation to our children to share their pennies with the poor. We ask our children to come up and drop their donation in the “Pennies for the Poor” jar when the ushers are taking up the collection for the com-munity at large.

St. Vincent de Paul Next Meeting—Sunday, March 19th—10:00 a.m.

Parish Hall—All are welcome.

LETTER FROM POPE FRANCIS THE “JOY OF THE GOSPEL” CONTINUED...

The Proclamation of the Gospel—#175

Centred on the word of God

The study of the sacred Scriptures must be a door opened to every believer. It is essential that the revealed word radically enrich our catechesis and all our efforts to pass on the faith. Evangelization demands familiarity with God’s word, which calls for dioceses, parishes and Catholic associations to pro-vide for a serious, ongoing study of the Bible, while encour-aging its prayerful individual and communal reading. We do not blindly seek God, or wait for him to speak to us first, for “God has already spoken, and there is nothing further that we need to know, which has not been revealed to us”. Let us receive the sublime treasure of the revealed word.

Fr. Terry’s Remarks— It is important for us now and then to recall our history as it can help us to better under- stand our present situation. The big Schism in our Church in the 17th century centered on our reading of the Scrip-tures. Martin Luther insisted that we translate, read and study the Bible. Of course he was wrong!!! Now the Protestants began to read and study the Bible and we good Catholics did the opposite. Good faithful Catholics depend-ed on what their priests told them once a week at Mass. It was only under Pope Pius X11, who was Pope in the 1940's, that Catholic scholars were permitted to examine Scripture with a critical eye. Now we have a lot of work to do, not only the scholars but every one of us. As Pope Francis re-minds us today: '' we do not blindly seek God, or wait for him to speak to us first, for God has already spoken, and there is nothing further that we need to know, which has not been revealed to us”. So let us read our Bibles. Let us re-flect on our Scriptures and prayers in Mass. Let us join our Scripture group in the Marian Room in the Hall on Monday evenings. Let us learn how to live our Redemption.
