FOLLOW IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF CHRIST The great fifty-day celebration of Easter has concluded, as have the feasts honoring the Holy Trinity and the Body and Blood of Christ. Last week we began a long stretch of Ordinary Time that will bring us to late November. Saint Paul tells us today that those who are baptized “have clothed yourselves with Christ” (Galatians 3:27). This scripture is echoed in the Church’s baptism ritual when we sing, “You have put on Christ, in him you have been baptized.” This message is inspiring and sobering at the same time, for in today’s Gospel, we get to the heart of what it means to be clothed in Christ. The Lord tells us, “If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me” (Luke 9:23). For the next twenty-two weeks we are called to take up the cross and, with Saint Luke as our guide, follow in the footsteps of Christ. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Dear Parishioners, A special prayer for all of our Fathers today:

A Prayer for Fathers God our Father, we give you thanks and praise

for fathers young and old.

We pray for young fathers, newly embracing their vocation; may they find the courage and perseverance to

balance work, family, and faith in joy and sacrifice.

We pray for our own fathers who have supported and challenged us; may they continue to lead in strong, gentle ways.

We remember fathers around the world

whose children are lost or suffering; may they know that the God of compassion walks with them in their sorrow.

We pray for men who are not fathers

but still mentor and guide us with fatherly love and advice.

We remember fathers, grandfathers and great-grandfathers who are no longer with us but who live forever in our memory and nourish us with their love.

Amen.

Fr. Terry and I wish all of our fathers a very happy and blessed day! Yours in Christ, Fr. Mario L. Borges

LETTER FROM POPE FRANCIS THE “JOY OF THE GOSPEL” CONTINUED...

The Church’s Missionary Transformation—#138

The Liturgical Context

The homily cannot be a form of entertainment like those presented by the media, yet it does need to give life and meaning to the celebration. It is a distinctive genre, since it is preaching situated within the framework of a liturgi-cal celebration; hence it should be brief and avoid taking on the semblance of a speech or a lecture. A preacher may be able to hold the attention of his listeners for a whole hour, but in this case his words become more important than the celebration of faith. If the homily goes on too long, it will affect two characteristic elements of the litur-gical celebration: its balance and its rhythm. When preaching takes place within the context of the liturgy, it is part of the offering made to the Father and a mediation of the grace which Christ pours out during the celebra-tion. This context demands that preaching should guide the assembly, and the preacher, to a life-changing com-munion with Christ in the Eucharist. This means that the words of the preacher must be measured, so that the Lord, more than his minister, will be the centre of attention. Fr. Terry’s Remarks— In the 17/18 centuries the great musical composers produced the most wonderful Mass compositions. The cathedrals were full of admiring audi-ences, the people were not taking part in the Eucharist, they were attending concerts. In response, the Church introduced Plain Chant so that the faithful could again participate in the celebration of the Eucharist but the dan-ger is always there that our choirs may try to be elitist. Also in the past we've had talented and popular preachers who drew the crowds. Pope Francis reminds us today that our homilies should not become too entertaining. They must be closely united to the tenor of the Mass of which it is a vital part. Many of you will think; ''entertainment? more like torture.'' Some believe that if they were preach-ing they would do a much better job of it, but when you stand before a congregation and are expected to deliver a homily that is a life-changing communion with Christ in the Eucharist, you can feel very, very inadequate. This is why we conclude all our petitions with; through Our Lord Jesus Christ. At the same time Jesus encourages us to keep trying and do our best.
