Catholic Charities “Transforming Lives” Presentation at Transfiguration Parish Hall

Saturday, December 3—10:00-11:00 a.m. You are invited to attend a one-hour presentation of Catholic Chari-ties East Bay (CCEB) at Transfiguration Church on Saturday, Dec. 3 in our parish hall, Marian Room. CCEB staff, clients, and volun-teers will explain how their programs move families and youth from crisis to stability and prosperity. You're likely to deepen your un-derstanding of needs and solutions in our diocese, and be surprised about how CCEB "...welcomes the stranger, heals trauma, and fos-ters self-sufficiency." Express your interest in attending this parish event: Call or text Bruce King at 510-210-1410 or email [email protected].

St. Vincent de Paul Thank you for your generous donations to the St. Vincent de Paul Collection at the end of October. We received $5,250 which will enable us to continue to help poor fam-ilies within our parish with food, transportation, and household needs. Your contributions make a big differ-ence to our families in need.

LETTER FROM POPE FRANCIS THE “JOY OF THE GOSPEL” CONTINUED...

The Proclamation of the Gospel—#159

Homiletic resources

Another feature of a good homily is that it is positive. It is not so much concerned with pointing out what shouldn’t be done, but with suggesting what we can do better. In any case, if it does draw attention to something negative, it will also attempt to point to a positive and attractive value, lest it remain mired in complaints, laments, criti-cisms and reproaches. Positive preaching always offers hope, points to the future, does not leave us trapped in negativity. How good it is when priests, deacons and the laity gather periodically to discover resources which can make preaching more attractive!

Fr. Terry’s Remarks— Positive thinking has been a mainstay of American psychology for generations but it has fallen to Pope Francis to assure us that it is also appli-cable to our preaching. So many of us has been reared on a diet of hell fire, sin and penance for so many years that when we laugh in church or allow ourselves to be hopeful of salvation, we feel a tinge of guilt or a desire to curb our emotions. What is wrong with us that we love “prophets of doom” above “bearers of good news”? Why have we allowed the Good News to become more like a sentence to Devil's Island? Let us move away from our constant carping, our love of negative remarks and our litanies of reproaches. May we allow the joy and hope of our Faith to infuse our minds and hearts with the Joy of the Gospel. Let the 'Francis effect' into our hearts but above all give the 'Jesus effect' a liberal home in our hearts.
