AUGUST 2017

Words of Hope by Rev. Meg Wilson

September is coming, school will start sooner than our children would like. Once autumn arrives, it’s

a quick sprint to the Thanksgiving holiday and then the Christmas season is upon us. Stop! It’s not here yet. We are entering the month of August, the sun still warms the days and the

fireflies still dance in the moonlight.

So consider stepping back and taking a deep breath. When was the last time you chose to spend

some time with nature? When was the last time you spent a Saturday morning puttering around in

the garden? When was the last time you walked through a park or rode your bike down a path?

When was the last time you put your feet in the cool lake water?

Life gets so busy that we find it easy to forget the One who created all that we know and all that

we are. We forget to pause and let our spirits be refreshed by God’s masterpiece.

There is something about digging in the earth or listening to the early morning songs of the birds,

that it offers us a sense of connection. The beauty of the earth reaches into our heaped hearts

and allows a sense of peace to wash over us.

Nature calls us to step away from the busy-ness of life and to take time to remember that life is

bigger than our hassles and our hurts. Connecting with God’s creation can become a balm to soothe

our wounds.

The scripture tells us to value the Sabbath. It doesn’t need to be a Sunday. It needs only to be

some intentional time, set aside to spend with God. A time to listen, a time to rest. The Sabbath

allows us to refresh our bodies, mind and spirit.

So during this month of August, before you become absorbed in your upcoming schedule, find time,

even if it’s only a few minutes a day, to look around you, and take in the beauty of creation.

May we always remember that the God of the mountains is also the God of you and me. If God sets

the planets into motion and filled the night sky with stars, than surely God can bring us through

this day.

In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. The Word was with God in the beginning. Everything came into being through the Word, and without the Word, nothing came into being.

REACH OUT IN FAITH

Thousands of older and disabled adults in our community struggle daily to get by. For these individuals a little

extra help can make it possible for them to remain safe and independent in their own homes. The Interfaith

Volunteer Caregivers program matches volunteers with frail, homebound and isolated neighbors who need

assistance. If you have just a couple hours a month that you can give to someone in need, you can make a huge

difference in the life of a struggling neighbor. You tell us what days, times and areas are convenient for you,

and how you would like to serve. You can be matched with the same person for regular visits, or just be on a

list for occasional rides and chores. Volunteers are needed to help with:

Transportation for appointments and essential errands

Simple chores, yard work or home repairs

Help with housekeeping or meal preparation

Friendly visits or supportive phone calls

Respite breaks for full-time family caregivers

And other support that can help a frail, older or disabled neighbor

Interested in having Flowers on the

Altar ?

Sign up sheets are posted in the

fellowship hall. Feel free to sign

up on a designated Sunday or

contact the church office for the

availability.

THE CRAFTY

LADIES will NOT BE

MEETING DURING

THE MONTH OF

AUGUST!

They will resume their meeting times and

craft items in September!

We know that loss of vision need not prevent people

from leading productive, independent lives. However,

it requires they learn different ways of doing things -

and it requires different sensitivities from those who

live, work, and socialize with them. This presentation

will answer your questions about vision loss and

blindness, and share ways for you to courteously and

safely interact with people who are visually impaired.

FREE of charge. ALL are WELCOME! RSVP’s are

requested to ensure adequate seating. (586) 757-

All one can do is leave open a window so the breeze

of love … may come in. If a window is open, the

breeze may still not blow in; there is no guarantee.

There is, however, one guarantee: if the window is

not open, the breeze will not blow in.

Yesterday is already a dream, and tomorrow is only a

vision; but today, well lived, makes every yesterday a

dream of happiness and every tomorrow a vision of

hope.

Together, we pray in worship and we

pray at home. Please check the

THINGS I’VE LEARNED …

I’ve learned that … no matter what

happens, how bad it seems today, life

does go on, and it will be better

tomorrow.

I’ve learned that … you can tell a lot

about a person by the way he or she

handles three things: a rainy day, lost

luggage, and tangled Christmas tree

lights.

I’ve learned that … making a “living” is

not the same thing as making a “life.”

I’ve learned that … you shouldn’t go

through life with a catcher’s mitt on

both hands. You need to be able to

throw something back.

I’ve learned that … if you pursue

happiness, it will elude you. But, if you

focus on your family, your friends, the

needs of others, your work & doing the

very best you can, happiness will find

you.

HOPE CHURCH PANTRY

During the summer months, we are trying to respond to the greater needs of

the people who come to us for assistance, as children have no access to free

school breakfast and lunch. While we always need canned goods, cereal and

other staples, it can be difficult for some of us to know what is most needed,

purchase those items and bring them to church. Monetary donations are especially helpful, as they allow us

to efficiently manage the Pantry stock according to the needs. Just include a donation in an envelope

(marked ‘FOOD PANTRY’) and leave it in the church office. A suggestion was made to have gift cards to

McDonald’s (or a nearby fast food restaurant) for $5 or $10 dollars, so those that are homeless or

living in their car can have a hot meal or a cup of coffee. Cards will be kept in the church office and

handed out when the need arises.

NEWS FROM THE CHRISTIAN MISSION & WITNESS COUNCIL

BLOOD DRIVE

Hope Church held it’s Blood

Drive on Thursday, June

29th.

This Blood Drive yielded 28 units of blood.

While we were happy with the results, we

could have done better because we had about

10 no-shows. We hope to do better next

time.

Our next Blood Drive will happen on

November 2nd. Please mark your calendar to

help us save lives.

MCREST IS COMING …

Yes, we are once again supporting

the MCREST program for women

and children. Our hosting week will

be September 24-30. There are

some changes that will happen just by virtue of the

fact that we are not housing the guests in our church.

This year, we will be providing bus tickets and gas

cards to those guests who have vehicles. The biggest

change, though is the fact that we will only be

providing a “heavy lunch” to the guests instead of a

breakfast, lunch, and evening meal. Also, there will be

no need for evening or overnight chaperones. Yea! As

in the past, the Donation House will go up on

Sunday, August 27. We hope that you will prayerfully

consider taking some items from the House to help

make our hosting week a success. More information

about the lunch prep will be coming at a later date. If

you have any questions, please call Susan Winters at

(586) 939-8944.

GLEANERS

On Saturday, September 16th, our church is scheduled to help pack

food at Gleaners Food Bank, located at 24162 Mound Road in Warren.

Won’t you please consider coming out for the morning (9 am till Noon)

and help with this rewarding task? Children ages 10 and up are

welcome also. A sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board in fellowship

hall.

COFFEE HOUR

The Board of

Trustees has

voted to go to

ONE COFFEE

HOUR for the

months of July and August. This will continue

until August 24th with the coffee, tea, donuts,

bagels, etc. being served from 9:30 am until

10:15 am.

The table will be set up with creamers, sugars,

napkins, etc. along with the bagels out and cut, the

donuts are delivered on Sunday morning. The coffee

takes over an hour to perk the amount of coffee

needed, so therefore someone would need to be

plugging the coffee pot in around 8:00 am.

Volunteers are still needed to sign up for either 8

am or 10:15 am. Sign-up sheets are located on

the bulletin board in fellowship hall.

Questions? Please see or call Debi in the church

office. 586.296.8760

A telephone call, note or card would brighten anyone’s

day … but especially our church family

that does not get out as well as we do.

We keep them in our thoughts & prayers!
