Religious Education News When I was little I would pick flowers for my mother. There were plenty of them out in the yard -- you know, those nice yellow ones that grow all by themselves -- right through the grass even! I would bring them in to her and she'd put them in a little glass with water. They seemed to make her so happy!

I was happy too, just to see her smile.

I'm thinking of that, of course, because it's Mother's Day and, for many, what would normally be done on Mother's Day can't be done this year. Shopping is limited, going out to eat is not a possibility although you can bring food in. What to do?

It doesn't matter, just do. My mother smiled at my gift of dandelions because she loved me and I loved her. The gift was only a sign, a sign of something much greater. Whatever you do for Mother's Day, make sure she knows the "something much greater" from you.

Of course, I haven't seen my mother's smile since 2009 when she left this earth for the new life offered by Jesus. I miss her, but I still love her. There is no material gift I can give her this Mother's Day, nor does she need anything, but I can pray for her, and with her, and ask her to pray for me. We are bonded in God and that love between us still must make her smile.

Whether your mother is living or dead, near or far, a close friend or hard to deal with, Mother's Day is about love. Our nurturing God who, by bringing us to birth, calls us to share in that experience of the divine life. Fr. Jim

Rice Bowl You may drop off your Rice Bowl contributions any time the church is open for prayer. Please place

them on the table in the back of church. They will be collected daily.

Join our DRE, Margie Little, on Facebook Sunday at 10:00 following the 9:00 a.m. livestreamed Mass as we honor our Blessed Mother with a May Crowning Ceremony. Due to special order of social distancing and the quarantine guide-lines set by our governor and the Most Reverend Bishop Paul Bradley, the ceremony will be celebrated via our electronic devices ONLY.

Be sure to check out our web page! We have links to learn-ing about our blessed Mother of Fatima, how to pray a Lectio Devinia, and how Pope Francis teaches us how to pray. Here is the link: https://mycatholic.life/saints/saints-of-the-liturgical-year/may-13---our-lady-of-fatima/

DUE TO COVID19: All First Holy Communion Celebra-tions during the month of May have been cancelled. The celebration of the beautiful Holy Sacrament will be rescheduled. Please feel free to contact Margie by phone or email 269-355-5671 or [email protected].

St. Basil - Did You Know? This is a continuation about the life and writings of St. Basil, our parish patron.

St. Basil came from a well-to-do family, one of ten children. St. Basil‘s mother was a daughter of a martyr. His father (who was also named Basil), was a very promi-nent lawyer and renowned orator at Caesarea.

After receiving his initial education under the supervision of his father, Basil then studied under the finest teachers in Caesarea and later transferred to Constantinople where he listened to famous orators and philosophers. To complete his education he went to Athens to study “classical enlightenment.” After five years he became pro-ficient in philosophy, oratory, astronomy, mathematics, and medicine. Upon returning to Caesarea at age 27 Basil became a well-known orator, and practiced law.

His life was now secure and his future looked very prom-ising. Making a commitment to become a Christian, he was baptized and became a catechist, reading and explaining the scriptures to the people. But his life was about to take a different turn. More next week!

The invitation remains! Join in youth ministry online through ProjectYM (https://ProjectYM.com/live) every Sunday evening from 8:00-9:00 p.m. Then, whether you attend youth ministry or not, join with other St. Basil teens for some face time on Zoom at 9:00 p.m. The meeting ID is the same as that communicated last weekend. There is no password. Contact Sylvia Verdonk at 616-446-5113 by phone or text, or email [email protected] with ques-tions or for more information. Information about our parish and the Diocese of Kalamazoo can be found at saintbasil-catholicchurch.org and at diokzoo.org. God is by our sides, traveling this difficult journey with us. Pray for peace and comfort, and listen to hear His voice in your heart.

"Fr. Jim's Corner," found in the toolbar of the Saint Basil website, has some great information in "This 'n That" and "Reflections" as well as some fun activities in "Trivia Game" and "Question of the Week." You are also invited to submit any question you might have about the Catholic faith at https://saintbasilcatholicchurch.org/youth-group-question.

Keep praying, and ask the Saints and Mary, our Blessed Mother, for their help and protection. You are loved as a precious child of God. At this moment in time, what is He calling you to do and be?

"I am the true vine, you are the branches, says the Lord. Whoever remains in me and I in him

will bear much fruit...." John 15: 1, 5

On May 17th, our parish will take up The Catholic Relief Services Collection. Funds from this collection provide food to the hungry, support displaced refugees, and bring Christ’s love and mercy to all people here and abroad. Please give generously to the collection, and help Jesus in disguise. Learn more about the six Catholic agencies the collection funds at www.usccb.org/catholic-relief. To make a donation before public Masses begin again, mail a check made out to your parish with “The Catholic Relief Services Collection” in the memo line.

Walking with Moms in Need… a Year of service

Bishop Bradley desires that our diocese participate in a yearlong initiative called “Walking with Moms in Need…a Year of Service”. Parishes across the nation, through the support of their bishops and pastors, are invited to join this nationwide effort to offer support to pregnant and parent-ing moms. Look for additional details in our future bulletins. We start our year with a prayer for Mother’s Day:

God our father, we ask your grace on all those to who you entrusted motherhood. May they be inspired with your mercy, wisdom, strength and selfless-love. May they re-ceive your abundant blessings in this earthly life, and may they look forward to eternal joy. Amen.

Lord, let your mercy be on us as we place our trust in You.

From the USCCB Archbishop Jose H. Gomez of Los Angeles, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, has issued the following regarding Coronavirus (COVID-19):

With the worldwide outbreak of the coronavirus, we are confronted once more with the fragility of our lives, and again we are reminded of our common humanity; that the peoples of this world are our brothers and sisters, that we are all one family under God.

God does not abandon us, he goes with us even now in this time of trial and testing. In this moment, it is important for us to anchor our hearts in the hope that we have in Jesus Christ. Now is the time to intensify our prayers and sacrifices for the love of God and the love of our neighbor. Let us draw closer to one another in our love for him, and rediscover the things that truly matter in our lives.

United with our Holy Father Pope Francis, let us pray in solidarity for our brothers and sisters here and around the world who are sick. Let us pray for those who have lost loved ones to this virus. May God console them and grant them peace.

We pray also for doctors, nurses, and caregivers, for public health officials and all civic leaders. May God grant them courage and prudence as they seek to respond to this emergency with compassion and in service to the common good.
