    PASTORAL POST

Fratelli Tutti Chapter 3, by Fr. Tony Davis

In Chapter 3, ‘Envisaging and Engendering an Open World,’ Pope Fran-

cis calls for greater inclusion in society. Perhaps the most direct way to

bring about greater inclusion is through the revitalization of the often-

forgotten principle in Catholic Social Teaching known as ‘the universal destination of goods.’

In the early Church, St. John Chrysostom said, ‘not to share our wealth

with the poor is to rob them and take away their livelihood. The riches

we possess are not our own, but theirs as well.’ Along these same lines,

the principle of the universal destination of goods means that God de-

sires for all to share the goods of the earth and that they are not meant

for just a select few. While pursuing the private good is permitted, the

pope notes how greed takes over and “it often happens that secondary

rights displace primary and overriding rights, in practice making them

irrelevant.” (120) When this happens, inequality increases and exclusion

occurs. In short, the pope argues that the private good must not super-

    sede the common good.

The common good is actually our true good. As the philosopher Gabriel

Marcel wrote, ‘I communicate effectively with myself only insofar as I

communicate with others.’ (87) It is only through other people that we

become fully alive and know who we really are. As isolated individuals,

our lives don’t make sense. In Christian terms, this communication must

extend as broadly as possible, even beyond one’s family or social clubs.

“Closed groups and self-absorbed couples that define themselves in op-

position to others,” the pope writes, “tend to be expressions of selfish-

ness and mere self-preservation.” (89) This is to revert back into the

private good while claiming to be part of a community.

One issue in particular that needs broader communication, friendship,

and love revolves around race. While some may claim that race is no

longer an issue and we’ve made enough progress on it, recent events in

the United States suggest otherwise. In this document, Pope Francis

(perhaps motivated by these events?) writes “racism is a virus that

quickly mutates and, instead of disappearing, goes into hiding, and lurks

in waiting.” (97) Ridding our communities of explicit racism isn’t enough.

We must look at the causes and systems that support it. Overall, to

build friendships centered around the common good, we must foster an

openness that even extends across racial barriers.

the parish offices, we wish hope you have

    a blessed 2021.

    SUNDAY OBLIGATION

The obligation for Catholics to attend

Sunday mass has been lifted indefinitely as

    you are at higher risk.

    spondence through Flocknote (lectors,

the parish. You may opt yourself out of

these subgroups and still be part of the

’everyone’ group. To join Flocknote, text

    FIRST COMMUNION PARENT-CHILD MEETING

Congratulations to our students preparing for First Communion on their First Recon-

ciliation on Wednesday, December 16. To officially begin preparing for First Commun-

ion, there is a Parent-Child First Communion Meeting on Wednesday, January 22,

2021 at 7 PM in the Church.

    DELAY IN OFFERTORY ENVELOPES

Our offertory envelope company has informed us that January offertory envelopes

have been shipped, but there is a delay in delivery. If you have not received your enve-

lopes, please place your offertory contribution in a plain envelope with your name and/

or envelope number on it so we can correctly credit your donation. You may also

choose to switch to Online Giving.

    ONLINE GIVING

We are currently up to 37 parish households using online giving though our website. If

online giving is more convenient for you, please consider using this feature. House-

holds that sign up for a recurring gift will be taken off of the envelope packet mailing

list, but will still receive the special collection envelopes by mail. Please note that there

is a month or two delay on changes to our offertory mailing list. Please consider giving

to the offertory on a recurring basis through our new payments option on our web-

site: stmatthiascolumbus.com, then click ‘Online Giving’ on the homepage.

    SHORTER MASSES CONTINUE

As the covid numbers remain high and the governor's curfew order is extended, we

will continue to keep masses short with no music through the month of January. Thank

you for your understanding as we wait for a safe time to reintroduce music and even-

    tually congregational singing.

School! Please visit www.sfdstallions.org/admissions-process to submit your applica-

tion; application deadline is January 15, 2021. Contact the school's Enrollment Office at

    PRAYER FOR 2021

It is our prayer that throughout this upcoming year, we can reintroduce many of our

parish activities, ministries, and other events that have all been suspended by the pan-

demic. We know that rebuilding the momentum may be difficult, but the Parish Offic-

es, Parish Council, and Finance Council have been using this time wisely to restructure,

regroup, and envision our future. As we gradually return, may this upcoming year be an

opportunity to make our parish more inclusive of all our parishioners.
