our Tokyo 13 mission completed, yesterday Karen and I were

two thirds of the way up the world’s tallest tower, the Tokyo Skytree. at 634 meters (2080 feet) the Skytree is only exceeded by mt Fuji in the hazy distance. The highest point visitors are permitted to ascend (by an elevator that travels at 10 meters/second) is 451.2 meters (1480 feet). From our glassed in vantage point we could look down on the thirteen million people that live within Tokyo’s immediate city limits—but beyond them as far as the eye can see is the megapolis that makes Tokyo and vicinity the largest urban sprawl on the planet (37 million people). Towering glass and steel corporate offices, surrounded by tiny two-story ma-and-Pa stores with their cramped upstairs residences, intersected by freeways and alleyways, the criss-cross of mass transit (emphasis on the

Whether you’re an alumnus from out of town or a visitor from across the street, we’re glad to welcome you to this festive worship celebration on this last Sabbath of September. We think every worship experience here at Pioneer is a high occasion with Christ—but we quickly agree there’s nothing so festal as the fall colors of homecoming weekend, framed by the stately flags of the nations around our campus mall. We hope your experience here in worship will bring a fresh burst of new life and hope in Jesus.

Prayer requests from our prayer team and connect cards:

• A group of students (SPARK) meets every weekday (Mon-Fri) at 7:00 AM inside the student center by the fireplace to pray together. This is another awesome opportunity for all—as it is before most people have work or classes. Spread the word!

• David Asscherick will be speaking on the campus of Andrews University October 18 thru October 26 in various venues. He will be presenting his message mainly for non-practicing SDA’s, non-SDA Christian and non-Christian students. If we truly are expecting God to “do a new thing” on campus, we need to be serious about what we expect God to be doing for the enlargement of His kingdom in this corner of the world! We cannot let the opportunity pass by to claim for God those students on campus who need to come to Him. We have Christian, Hindu, Buddhist, and atheist students on campus who need to be introduced and reintroduced to the Creator. We also have SDA students who are not living up to what they have been taught. Many of their parents are praying that something will happen to their children spiritually while they are on our campus, and we have the opportunity to help answer their prayers. This is the time for God to reach their minds and hearts. May we also have the passion of Christ for the lost around us.

• We have a man who comes to our 8:00 am worships here in the battle creek adventist village monday thru

Friday. he was raised a Seventh-day adventist, but has not been one for probably 40 years. he tells his girlfriend, who is catholic, that this is the church that is following what the bible says, but has not made the decision to surrender his heart fully to christ. Please pray that the holy Spirit will continue to work on his heart and in his life.

• God has opened all the doors for us to move closer to a friend’s father, step-mom, brother, and sister. This is a verY dysfunctional family, but her father has been taking small steps in the right direction. both the father and step-mom have alcohol issues and we want so badly for the children to know Jesus. I am asking for daily prayer for us as we begin this journey with them.

“Stop your crying and wipe away your tears. All that you have done for your children will not go

unrewarded; they will return from the enemy’s land.”

I love it when I receive a card of encouragement, don’t you? “Kind

words are like honey—sweet to the soul and healthy to the body” (Proverbs 16:24).

at Pmc, our Women’s ministries’ “caring cards” team sends out many “apples of gold” (See Proverbs 25:10-12) each week to those in our congregation who are ill, who have suffered a loss, or who are homebound. our prayers go along with each card.

over the years we’ve received many notes telling us that our ministry is appreciated: “on behalf of our family, I want to thank you for your message of condolence on the death of mother. Your memory of her as a ‘precious lady’ who even called to thank you when she received your card was important to us. Thanks a lot for your prayers, thoughts and cards as they did a world of good. come, Lord Jesus.”

marilyn bender, leader of caring cards, invites other women to join her team, “If you consider yourself a ‘caregiver,’ a ‘support person,’ or a

person who likes to bring joy and encouragement, even to a stranger, you’d fit right in. If you are shy about meeting people personally, but like to write notes to share your love for Jesus, you can make a difference in someone’s life. our homebound members look forward to personal letters and the promises of your prayers. call me, and leave a message if I’m not home. I’ll return your call, and get you started in this ministry of love.” –Sue Rappette

Welcome alumni, we are glad you have chosen to worship with us.

Through technology, we are able to share this worship with thousands, both locally here in michiana and around the globe. god has blessed this ministry this year. here are 5 ways:

#1 Volunteers: god has provided more than fifty media volunteers who make this ministry possible. This ministry would not function without them.

#2 Staffing: god has given us three great people who have devoted their careers full time to ministering through media. They are our full-time team—media director, editor and graphic designer. Their dedication to ministry and professional excellence has expanded this ministry.

#3 Equipment: god has enabled us to replace equipment as it has failed, often at a better deal than if we had purchased immediately. There are still things we wish we had—six new high-definition cameras are at the top of our list ($65,000 each). based on experience, god will provide when our cameras are no longer functional for his ministry purposes.

#4 www.pmchurch.tv: every month more than 20,000 people visit our website. Web ministry is a huge part of media ministry. People can watch live each week or download sermons to share with friends. It has become an excellent ministry tool.

#5 Continuous Funding: Through your support of mPe, online donations and the faithfulness of the Tv Pioneers—those giving $10/week toward television—we have the necessary funding to continue purchasing air time, funding salaries, buying bandwidth and spreading the gospel message to the world. Thank you for your support. –Nickilos Wolfer

on Wednesday of the first week of September, students and staff at

andrews academy traveled to Warren Dunes Park for our annual school picnic. god blessed us with a wonderful sunny day . . . and a gentle breeze to keep the temperature perfect.

In the morning students got acquainted as they played beach volleyball, touch football, and soccer or just explored the dunes or hung out at the beach. after lunch, individual classes participated as a group, which developed class teamwork and class spirit, while class officers had an opportunity to develop leadership. The first activity was for each class to build a sand sculpture that conveyed a spiritual message. The creativity was amazing! When the sculptures were complete, they were judged and then left there on the beach to bless other people as they walked by.

The last event of the day was a tug of war. each class took turns trying to pull another class over the line. after a lot of pulling, yelling, and screaming, the sophomores (class of 2016) proved they were the “strongest” class.

before long our students will forget who won at the various games; however, the pictures with their smiles will remain. Please continue to pray for each andrews academy student as new friendships continue to grow. We want these relationships to have Jesus at the center. We are thankful that god has blessed andrews academy with a great group of students.

mass), in the midst of which is the thick green folliage of the Imperial Palace where live an emperor and empress—this is Tokyo, with nearly one out of every three people in Japan (and one out of every 189 people on earth) living beneath the Skytree’s gaze.

but what is the god’s-eye view? “For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth” (2 Chronicles 16:9). beyond Tokyo, as his eye sweeps over osaka and Seoul and beijing and Singapore and Perth and calcutta and Istanbul and Soweto and Nairobi and moscow and Prague and London and Sao Paulo and mexico city and Toronto and New York and houston and Santa Fe and Seattle and benton harbor, beyond “the smoke of a thousand villages—villages whose people are without christ, without god, and without hope in the world”

(robert moffat)—what is his god’s-eye view of this civilization? When he gazes through the mortar and mud, the steel and glass, the tin and cardboard behind which are huddled the masses of earth, what does god see? For “the eyes of the LORD are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good” (Proverbs 15:3).

We see a world separated by its radical diversities, segregated by its racial/socio-economic/geographic divides. but the clearest and most penetrating vision belongs to the god atop the cross who still so loves the world (John 3:16), who still these millennia later sends his friends and followers into it, all of it (matthew 28:19). The truth is god stills sends missionaries—student missionaries, lifelong missionaries, short-term missionaries, volunteer missionaries—to the furthest reaches of civilization.

The crying needs we witnessed in the Land of the rising Sun (where 1/100 of 1% are members of our community of faith) have convinced me that the day of missionaries is hardly past. In fact I believe the day of missionaries has a new dawning for this generation at this critical time.

“And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ Then I said, ‘Here I am! Send me’” (Isaiah 6:8, 9).

Today when you overhear his voice asking that very same question, I hope the Spirit of god will embolden you to make that very same reply.

mUSic aLIveoF aND From The Sea

The sea and rescue from its perils have long been both literally

and figuratively important factors in the history of humankind. The gospel record, of course, is striking in its portrayal of christ miraculously calming the tumultuous sea (mark 4:35-41) and walking on the sea (mark 6:45-52). The hymn “eternal Father, Strong to Save” has a very literal sense. The author lived at Winchester,

england, which was about 12 miles from the ocean. but, while perhaps intended only literally, the hymn also is meaningful figuratively. Psalm 124: 2, 4 says: “If it had not been the LorD who was on our side, when men rose up against us: . . . Then the waters had overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul . . .” on life’s sea journey, we may rejoice today to be protected “in danger’s hour.”

LorD, my strength and my fortress, my refuge in time of distress, to you the nations will come from the ends of the earth and say,

“Our ancestors possessed nothing but false gods, worthless idols that did them no good. Do people make their own gods? Yes, but they are not gods!”

“Therefore I will teach them [says the LorD]—this time I will teach them my power and might.

Then they will know that my name is the lord.”
