All About Electricity Unit Plan

Tuesday

Analyze the Learner My class is a fourth grade class of 24 students-- 13 boys and 11 girls.

• 14 of my students are white, 7 are African American, and 3 are Asian.

• One student has Asperger’s, four have ADHD, and one has dyslexia.

• Two students are gifted learners.

State the ObjectivesBy the end of the day, my students will diagram the parts of a circuit, build and manipulate circuits, and recognize why a circuit does or does not work, as well as gain an awareness of what conductors and insulators are, with 75% of the learners finishing the lesson proficient on the topic.

Select the Methods, Media, and MaterialsWe will need Sylvia’s Mini-Maker video, so students can learn how to use Squishy Circuit kits. I will have to provide Squishy Circuit Dough (which I can make at home and bring to school), LED lights and motors for each group and a battery for each group. We will need paper and markers, as well as a video camera.

Utilize Media and MaterialsI plan to watch Sylvia’s Mini-Maker video to introduce my students to our squishy circuit materials, circuits, and conductors and insulators. We will use the squishy circuit supplies to build circuits that will facilitate our class’s discussion about electricity. Students will use the video camera to make a paper slideshow about circuits. This lesson will be a little more time consuming.

Require Learner Participation We will begin our lesson by watching Sylvia’s Mini-Maker Video. Then, students in teams of five, will create “squishy circuits” by using my and Sylvia’s directions. We will use our “Squishy Circuits” to facilitate our discussion on the parts of a circuit and circuit related vocabulary. I will give students extra time to be creative with the “squishy circuit supplies.” Finally, I will give students guidelines on how to make a paper slide show. They will work in their to write a script, illustrate, narrate and video their paper slide show displaying their knowledge of circuits.

Evaluate and ReviseI will be able to examine my students understanding of circuits by looking at their “squishy circuit” creations. If they are working, then I will know they understand, but if they do not I can assist them to get their lights on and motors turning, therefore helping them understand circuits better. I will also examine their

understanding by reviewing their paper slide shows (They will have guidelines and expectations of what I want included.).
