CIF- SS Girls Volleyball Power Ranking & Divisional Information

2018-2019

1) Based upon a two-year weighted power point total. 25% value for the 2016 season and 75% value for the 2017

season.

2) Strength of regular season schedule results and playoff performance results v. schools from within the Southern

Section. Opponents from outside the Southern Section or any contest played during the CIF State Regional

tournament currently carry a power point value of zero.

3) Regular season matches are weighted based upon the strength of opponent and the result against them. Power

points are earned regardless of if the match was won or lost. Example: a loss in a match v. a Division 1, tier 1

opponent would earn you 54 power points while a win in a match v. a Division 2, tier 2 opponent would earn you

63 power points.

4) Playoff matches are awarded bonus points for each round you advance.

5) The breaks in each division were set based on the number of schools it takes to find on average 30 automatic

playoff qualifiers.

6) Schools that do not report two years of data are not eligible for entry into the 2018 Girls Volleyball playoffs.

7) Schools have from the date of the original release on June 7, 2018 until the posting of the pre-season bulletin

(approximately August 6, 2018) to correct any errors made to the 2017 season schedule. After the release of the

pre-season bulletin no more adjustments will be made. Schools who fail to enter the required information prior to

the pre-season bulletin release will NOT BE ELIGIBLE for the playoffs regardless of how they finished in league

play.

8) The number of divisions has been reduced from ten to nine. Last year across all divisions we had a total of 17

“byes” for the ten playoff brackets. In addition to the 17 byes we also have13 schools from the northern part of the

Southern Section leaving to join the Central Section. Of these 13 schools seven of them were automatic qualifiers

thus bringing the potential “bye” total to 24. Therefore, a reduction in the total number of playoff divisions was

necessary.

9) This year at the top of the rankings there will be a DIV 1 / DIV 2 playoff grouping. What playoff division these

teams compete in will not be decided until the last seeding meeting on Friday, October 12, 2018. Throughout the

course of the season results will be collected and reviewed to track and rank the weekly top 10. Using the power

ranking system AND committee determination the top 16 teams from the combined list will make up Division 1.

The remaining teams will make up Division 2. Division 1 will have a 16 team playoff bracket while Division 2 will

have a 32 team playoff bracket.

Point Formula Information:

Regular season

There are four levels of point totals for each division based on wins and losses by an individual volleyball team.

Each division has a point differential of two (2) points for each tier both for a win and a loss. There is a 17 point

differential between a win and loss for each tier. Last season the win / loss differential was set at 16 points.

Point Formula Information Post Season Playoffs:

Playoff wins (bonus points) are awarded for each round that a team advances in the playoffs. Each round awards

additional points based on the formula listed below. All first-round losses for all nine divisions earns bonus points

for making the playoffs. Teams that earn a Wild Card playoff entry will also earn bonus points both for a win and a

loss in each of the nine divisions.
