Recently classified as a World Heritage site, Cockatoo is the largest
island in Sydney Harbour. Its intriguing history as a convict prison and
one of the nation’s biggest shipyards has bestowed it with a graphic
landscape of stone and iron, all set before the dazzling backdrop of
Sydney Harbour. The island’s ferry network, luxury accommodation and
camping precincts make this the ultimate setting for an event that will
attract attendees in their thousands.
From day one to day five, there are ongoing
celebrations surrounding the film openings
and special events, presenting a new level of
festival entertainment and experience. These
include:
• The Director’s Table - an intimate evening
to celebrate independent artists
• Opening Night Gala Film & Party
• Cocktails At Biloela House - each evening
the Festival will honour a film luminary
• Nightly Celebrations - featuring leading
Australian music performers
• Awards Ceremony and Reception - the
competition juries select films from both
the documentary and dramatic categories
to receive a range of awards
• The Cockatoo Boat Race - boats will race
from Cockatoo Island around Goat Island
and back, with prizes awarded to the first
place winner and “best dressed” boat
• The Giant BBQ - 12,000 Sydneysiders
celebrate cinema Aussie-style with the
country’s largest BBQ

marketIng & CommunICatIons
It all started in a tiny Hunter town when in
2007 filmmakers Stavros Kazantzidis and
Allanah Zitserman founded the Dungog
Film Festival with the goal to create an
event that connected Australian filmmakers
and audiences. Within just a few years
Dungog became the largest festival of
Australian films in the world, attracting over
10,000 people annually and achieving the
accolade of Australia’s Best Film Festival
at the industry’s 2011 Inside Film Awards.
In October the festival team relocated to
Cockatoo Island in the heart of Sydney
Harbour to fulfil an even more ambitious
vision -- the Cockatoo Island Film Festival;
a world-class event of domestic and
international film, theatre and music.
