Overview 

Circuit Description

The engine position sensor monitors the engine position and the engine speed, thenpasses this information to the electronic control module (ECM) through the sensor harness.

Component Location

The engine position sensor is located above the accessory drive.

Shop Talk

If the fault occurs only at a certain engine temperature, check the engine positionsensor circuit while the engine is at that particular temperature.

Check the camshaft end play to make sure that the camshaft gear is not moving toofar away from the end of the engine position sensor.

Check for moisture in the sensor harness connector at the ECM. Possible causes of this fault code include a damaged engine position sensor, short

circuit, or an open circuit.

To reduce the possibility of damaging a new ECM, all other active faultcodes must be investigated prior to replacing the ECM.

STEPS SPECIFICATIONS

STEP 1. Check the engine position sensor.

STEP 1A. Inspect the engineposition sensor and the sensor

harness connector pins.

No damaged pins

More than 100k ohms

Guided Step 1 - Check the engine position sensor.

Guided Step 1A - Inspect the engine position sensor and the sensorharness connector pins.

STEP 2A. Inspect the sensorharness and the ECM connectorpins.

No damaged pins

  STEP 2B. Check for a short circuitto ground.

More than 100k ohms

  STEP 2C. Check for a short circuitfrom pin to pin.

More than 100k ohms

  STEP 2D. Check for an opencircuit.

1000 to 2000 ohms

STEP 3. Clear the fault codes.

STEP 3A. Disable the fault code. Fault Code 115 inactive

  STEP 3B. Clear the inactive faultcodes.

 All fault codes cleared

Conditions

Turn the keyswitch OFF. Disconnect the engine harness

from the engine position sensor.

Action

inspect the sensor harness and the

engine position sensor connector pinsfor the following:

Corroded pins Bent or broken pins Pushed back or expanded pins Moisture in or on the connector Missing or damaged connector

seals Dirt or debris in or on the

connector pins.

OK  NOT OK

Guided Step 1B - Check for a short circuit to ground.

No damaged pins Repair the damaged pins

Flush the dirt, debris, or moisture from theconnector pins.

Repair or replace the engine harness or

ECM, whichever has the damaged pins.

Flush the dirt, debris, or moisturefrom the connector pins usingelectrical contact cleaner, Part Numer3824510.

Install the appropriate connector sealif it is damaged or missing.

Repair the engine harness. Refer toProcedure 019-201.

Replace engine harness. Refer to

Procedure 019-043. Replace engine position sensor.

Refer to Procedure 019-043.

Go to 1B  Go to 3A

Guided Step 2B - Check for short circuit to the ground.

Repair or replace the engine harness orsensor, whichever has the damaged pins.

Flush the dirt, debris, or moisturefrom the connector pins usingelectrical contact cleaner, Part

Number 3824510. Install the appropriate connector seal

if it is damaged or missing. Repair the engine harness. Refer to

Procedure 019-204 or 019-201. Replace the engine harness. Refer to

Procedure 019-043. Replace the engine position sensor.

Refer to Procedure 019-038.

Repair or replace the engine harness

Repair the engine harness. Refer to Procedure 019-204. Replace the engine harness. Refer to Procedure 019-043.

Go to 2D  Go to 3A

Measure the resistance from pin49 to pin 50 of the sensor harnessconnector.

Measure the resistance from pin47 to pin 48 of the sensor harnessconnector.

OK  NOT OK 

1000 to 2000 ohms Repair or replace the engine harness

Repair the engine harness. Refer toProcedure 019-204.

Replace the engine harness. Refer toProcedure 019-043.

Guided Step 3 - Clear the fault codes.

Guided Step 3A - Disable the fault code.

Guided Step 3B - Clear the inactive fault codes.

Conditions

Connect all components. Turn the keyswitch ON.

Action

disable the fault code.

Start the engine and let it idle for 1minute.

Using INSITE™, verify Fault Code115 is inactive.

OK  NOT OK 

Fault Code 115 inactive Return to the troubleshooting steps orcontact your local Cummins AuthorizedRepair Location if all the steps have beencompleted and checked again.

Go to 3B  Go to 1A 

Conditions

Connect all components. Turn the keyswitch ON.

Action

clear the inactive fault codes.

Erase the inactive fault codesusing INSITE™.

OK  NOT OK 

 All fault codes cleared Troubleshoot any remaining active faultcodes.
