Combined.Spokesman Banquet

The joint meeting-banquet of theChicago Spokesman Clubs had been along time in the planning but this happyaffair, which has become an annual one,was held in Wozniak's hall on Sundaynight July 29, 1962. Approximately 100men from the Saturday night, Sundaymorning, Sunday evening and Tuesdaynight groups arrived by 7 o'clock to feastand take part in the occasion which enables the four sections of the club tobe reunited.

Beautiful maidens served a sumptuousmeal prepared in the kitchen by members of the elite Sunday morning Ladiesclass. It is feared many more memberswould have taken more active parts inthe meeting if they had not been engrossed in tasting and testing the variousdishes. The bachelors seemed particularlyimpressed!

The awards for the evening went to:Mr. Ackerson for the "Most EffectiveSpeaker"; Dale Schurter for "Most Improved Speaker"; Mr. Perez for " BestEvaluator"; Mr. Gene Carter for "BestComment" in the Topics session; andthe Topicmaster was rated "Good," theToastmaster "Excellent" for their performances. Unhappily, many men received whitewash bru shes symbolizingfailures to fulfill their various responsibilities in the club . Scenes from thebanquet are pictured below .

Three Graduates

surprise, sincere happiness and deep joyas Mr. Ted Armstrong called to the platform Mr. Dean Wilson, Mr. ArthurCraig, and Mr. Bill Winner to be ordained as Preaching Elders in the veryWork of Jesus Christ! All three men hadjust been graduated from AmbassadorCollege the preceding day and the entireHeadquarters congregation rejoiced intheir ordinations.

Bible Story BookExplodes Retord

The initial response for Volume II ofthe BIBLE STORY has been fantastic!Mail receipts have exploded! Existingrecords were wiped out by an avalancheof mail that threw the Mail ReceivingDepartment (Pasadena) tens of thousandsof letters behind!

A record week of 65,395 letters totallyeclipsed the old mark of 34,266 set inMay, 1961. The old week-day high of6,176 went by the wayside on Monday,June 18, when 16,767 letters pouredinto the office! A record month is alsoin the making with a possible 160,000letters!

little of South Bend's Church history.Mr. Dean Blackwell started a Bible Studyin March of 1961, with seventy-five inattendance. After about four months ofBible studies, Church services began withabout one hundred fifty in attendance.By the third week there were two hundred and twenty! In the fall of 1961,Mr. Frank McCrady moved to SouthBend to feed the newly formed Churchand rapid growth continued; by the firstof the year as many as two hundred andfifty were attending. Following the ministerial conference in January 1962 a newminister (to this area) was sent to SouthBend.

Mr. and Mrs. Lester McColm andtheir two fine teen-aged children arrivedat South Bend, and moved into theapartment vacated by Mr. McCrady.

Mr. McColm's spiritual begettal oc-

curred in the Pacific Northwest wherehis parents had moved during the thirtiesof dust bowl fame. This was a "Grapesof Wrath" exodus from North Dakota.

Mrs. McColm was called first, causingmany a stormy day at the McColm home.God soon opened Mr. McColm's eyes, and I believe the first scripture he readwas-"Whatever you set your hand todo, do with your might" (Ecc. 9: 10). Intwo years he was ordained a deacon, and under the tutorship of Mr. RaymondCole he was soon giving sermonettes, and in 1961 he was ordained a LocalElder. The McColm family was nextmoved to Salem, Oregon to assist in theChurch there, and in the fall of 1961the entire family moved to Pasadenawhere Mr. McColm attended Ambassador College for one semester.

Since their arrival at South Bend theChurch has continued to grow at an accelerated pace with as many as threehundred and eighty-five attending Sabbath services.

With brethren scattered over threestates, Michigan, Indiana and Ohio, Mr.McColm found it impossible to counselas he had hoped, especially with prospective letters coming from Pasadena at therate of one per day.

3

The answer was evident-group counsels on Bible Studies would help. TheGlen Keeley family graciously openedtheir home (located near Gobles, Michigan,) to cover South Western Michiganand to date the highest attendance hasbeen seventy-seven. To help the Indianaand Ohio area a Bible Study was inaugurated at Fort Wayne with up to sixtythree attending. To help those farthernorth in Michigan a Bible Study has beenconducted at the home of Mr. NeilSkinner, west of Shelby, Michigan.

The training of leaders for the Churchand the home, as well as for the comingKingdom of God, has not been neglected. The night of May 6 brought a group ofthrilled men to the plush Pick OliverHotel for their first Spokesman Clubmeeting. After several meetings it becameevident a second club was needed.

For the Sunday morning club Mr.Joseph Tkach was imported from Chicago to take over the duties of President.Other Club officers are-Vice-president,Mr. James Hambrock; Secretary, Mr. H.Huber; Treasurer, Mr. J. Buckley andSergeant at Arms, Mr. G. Keeley.

The Sunday evening Club is presidedover by your writer, Mr. R. Van Slooten. The other officers are-Vice-president,Mr. R. Johnson; Secretary, Mr. J. Moore;Treasurer, Mr. J. Hosterman; Sergeant-at-Arms, Mr. G. Johnson.

by Elisha Crim

The Chicago Church has lost one ofits Negro deacons. At the request of theministers, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Marrsand their three boys Edwin (four), Michael (two) and Jonathan (six weeks)have moved to Meridian, Mississippi. Mr.Marrs will be working under Mr. ArthurCraig, helping him to serve the hungering, thirsting and widely-scattered Negrobrethren in that area.

A farewell party was given in theirhonor at the home of Mr. and Mrs.Maceo Hampton. There was an abundance of delicious snacks and fruitpunch, along with music, dancing andgames. These created an atmosphere ofgaiety and joy. But an air of sorrow andinner regret could be felt because theywould no longer be with us. But even inthe midst of this, all of us felt elated andthankful that God had selected one fromamong us to assist in serving our brethren in the South.

Australia - Part 5Early in March an unprecedented

event occurred-three a r r i val s in oneday! Gene Hughes and wife with son,John, arrived at Mascot from the U.S.just a few minutes before Mr. Waterhouse's return from Manila, followed bythe arrival of Mr. Portune, a flight behind him.

Mr. Hughes arrived as the Work expanded to become the Business Managerof the office under Mr. Waterhouse. Thetwo ministers had rendezvoused in thePhilippines to survey the Work there.Under Mr. Ortiguero's direction thePhilippines showed great possibilities foradding more radio stations as God directs, and conversion of many people there.Groups scattered through the Islands observed the Sabbath and Holy Days.

Then came news of the proposed ex-

pansion to Africa, with Mr. Waterhouseleaving Australia to direct this new office.

Sunday, 7 January 1962, Mr. TonyHammer stopped in Sydney while on hisway to the Ministerial Conference. Dayslater it was announced that Mr. Waterhouse was not to return to Australia, andthat Mr. Wayne Cole was officially thedirector placed in charge of the Australian Work. This event brings us up tothe present. Since its beginning the workthat God began here in Australiahas taken tremendous leaps and shownphenomenal growth. A great deal of respect goes to the first director sent here-Mr. Gerald D. Waterhouse, for hisdiligence in doing God's will. For his partin this growth, we salute him, but as hehimself would be the first to admit, thiswork is just "beginning to get ready tocommence to start". So while we can rejoice in what has been done, let's at thesame time set our hands to the plow thatwe have been given.
