INTRODUCTORY CERTIFICATE IN MARKETING

8

WhAT IS IT?The Introductory Certificate in Marketing is a Level 3 qualification for anyone who wants to find out more about marketing – whether you’re in a job that involves marketing or not. It answers the question ‘what is marketing?’ but it also aims to develop knowledge and skills for people who are working to support others in basic marketing tasks.

WhO IS IT FOR?Junior marketers, secretarial or administrative roles, people on the periphery of marketing, event management assistants, personal assistants, non-marketers with some marketing involvement, customer service assistants/call centre employees, modern apprenticeship equivalents.

WhAT IS ExPECTED OF ME?At this level you will be expected to complete approximately 120 hours study, between time with your tutor and personal study.

Do you qualify? You don’t need any previous qualifications or marketing experience to complete this qualification. However, if you are working or have some business experience, this will certainly help you put your learning into context.

If English isn’t your first language, you will also need to provide us with evidence of at least IELTS 6.5 academic proficiency or Trinity ISE III/IV, or the C1 Level from the Common European Framework of References for Languages (CEFR).

Course contentThis qualification has two units, each with its own assessment method.

Unit 1. What is Marketing? This unit seeks to provide the backdrop to the importance of marketing in terms of what marketing is and how it is defined. It focuses on the role of marketing, its cross-functional importance and its contribution to business success. It also looks at the role of marketing as a service provider within the organisation.

The unit also provides a basic understanding of the internal and external marketing environment and the marketing mix, with consideration of how these factors differ from one sector to another.

By the end of this unit, you should be able to demonstrate a sound knowledge and understanding of marketing and its contribution to organisational success.

The unit also provides some insight into the practicalities of developing internal and external relationships, including consideration of networking, collaboration and cooperation in order to reduce the potential for conflict.

Developing effective tactical communications and effective customer service support is essential to harmonious relationships in both B2B and B2C organisations, and as a result the unit considers the contributions that these activities can make to developing relationships for marketing and business success.

I’ve been working in the industry for some years but don’t have any formal qualifications – is CIM right for me?

Yes. Many of our members join us to take a qualification with many years of experience already under their belt. Your individual experience will help decide what level of qualification is right for you.

Should I take a core CIM marketing qualification or a specialist qualification?

If you haven’t got a core marketing qualification we always advise taking one of these first. You’ll get a better grounding in the essentials of marketing before taking specialist qualifications.

Do you offer exemptions?

Depending on the qualification that you have, you may be eligible to be exempted from certain units.

You can get in touch directly with us or our Accredited Study Centres to ask any questions you may have. In the meantime, here’s a few questions that we’re frequently asked together with some answers. We hope they help.
