NYC Parks is marking Black History Month with a new exhibit – “Namesakes: Honoring African Americans in NYC Parks” at the Arsenal Gallery.

The show focuses on a selection of parks throughout the city named after notable African Americans. This exhibition is presented by NYC Parks’ Ebony Society and Art & Antiquities, and will be on view through February 27, 2020.

“This year’s Black History Month exhibition is a moving display of notable African Americans commemorated through our green spaces and monuments,” said NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver, FAICP. “With archival and current photographs of more than a dozen namesakes, the show illustrates how African American history has shaped our city’s culture and park system.”

Many of the city’s parks and monuments

honor African Americans who have shaped the landscape of our culture. The exhibit highlights some of the green spaces that pay tribute to the contributions and lives of notable African Americans from the 18th century to the 21st century. Historical images from the NYC Parks Photo Archive are displayed alongside contemporary photographs. Accompanying texts share biographical details about the namesake individuals as well as information about the parks’ histories.

The NYC Parks Ebony Society was founded in 1985 and has helped organize the annual exhibition honoring Black History Month in the Arsenal Gallery since 1991.

The Arsenal Gallery is located on the third floor of Parks’ headquarters in Central Park on Fifth Avenue at 64th Street. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., and admission is free.

New York City Transit (NYCT) President Andy Byford is resigning.

The MTA announced on Thursday that Byford would be stepping down after two years on the job.

“Andy Byford will be departing New York City Transit after a successful two years of service and we thank him for his work,” said MTA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Pat Foye. “Andy was instrumental in moving the system forward, enacting the successful Subway Action Plan and securing record capital funding with the Governor and the Legislature, and we wish him well in his next chapter.”

Byford assumed his role in January 2018, at a time when the MTA was besieged by transit delays, financial difficulties and questions regarding its management.

He helped implement the Subway Action Plan, an ambitious effort to modernize the system including new

subway cars, signals and communication technology.

Byford reportedly submitted a resignation letter in October 2019, but later changed his mind and rescinded it.

“I’m very proud of what we have achieved as a team over the past two years, and I believe New York City Transit is well placed to continue its forward progress now that the MTA has a record breaking $51.5 billion Capital Program in place,” Byford said in a statement. “I’m very grateful to Governor Cuomo, Chairman Foye and members of the Board for giving me the opportunity to serve New York and to head up North America’s largest transit system.”

In a statement, Riders Alliance Executive Director John Raskin credited Byford with improving the subway system and put onus on the Governor Andrew Cuomo for fixing the MTA’s woes.

“Subway and bus riders are grateful to Andy Byford for his historic service at New York City Transit,” said Raskin. “In two years, Andy made subways faster and more reliable, he tackled longstanding challenges to improving bus service, and he crafted the first plan in a generation that would truly modernize the transit system.”

“No matter who runs the transit system day-to-day, ultimately Governor Cuomo is in charge of the MTA, and riders will be holding the governor accountable for the quality of our transit service. With whatever management team he puts in place, the governor is on the hook for making subways faster and more reliable, rescuing buses from years of decline, and delivering on a $51 billion capital

program to fix public transit for the long term,” he added.

Prior to coming to NYCT, Byford served as the head of the Toronto Transit Commission for five years. He previously held similar roles in Toronto, London and Sydney, Australia.

A record number of New Yorkers became organ donors last year, according to federally designated organ procurement organization LiveOnNY.

Locally, there were 48 organ donations in the Bronx during 2019, and 206 donations since 2015, LiveOnNY reported.

During 2019, 341 donors in the state provided organs such as hearts, lungs, livers and kidneys to help save nearly 1,000 lives, LiveOnNY said.

The number of donors in New York rose 10 percent from 2018.

Currently, 113,000 adults and children nationwide are waiting to receive a lifesaving organ, including 10,000 New Yorkers.

“I am so grateful to my donor for giving me a second chance at life,” she said. “This heart has given me a chance to one day have a child of my own, to have a career and now do the little things that everyone else takes for granted like being able to walk upstairs.”

Founded in 1978, LiveOnNY has helped procure more than 23,000 organ donations. The nonprofit works closely with 11 transplant centers, nearly 100 hospitals, and several tissue and eye banks.

“More New Yorkers were given a second chance at life last year thanks to our world-renowned transplant surgeons, hospital critical care teams and the tireless, compassionate staff at LiveOnNY who work around the clock 365 days-a-year to make the gift of life possible,” said Lee H. Perlman, Chairman of the LiveOnNY Board of Directors. “Our transplant community made impressive progress and that momentum will continue. But no matter how heartening these achievements may be, we have a commitment to provide the gift of life to

every New Yorker still on the waiting list, and that will remain our chief focus, in 2020 and for years to come.”

There has been nothing short of a circus of tabloid coverage

about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex deciding to "step back" from their roles as senior members of the royal family.

Despite all the brouhaha, Prince Harry has made it eminently clear that one thing he is not stepping back from is his mental health advocacy work. He also has announced that he will remain Patron of the Rugby Football League (RFL). The Duke succeeded Her Majesty The Queen as Patron in 2016, and he hosted the draw for the 2021 Rugby League World Cup in Buckingham Palace last week. He used the opportunity to help launch the Rugby League's mental fitness initiative, in which he stressed that rugby "is not just about being physically fit but more importantly mentally strong." Here are some of my observations from this past week.

Mental fitness charter. The Rugby League World Cup 2021 is the first major

international sporting event to launch a Mental Fitness Charter. The overall objective of this charter is to educate all those involved in the tournament and the wider Rugby League family about the need to look after their own mental fitness and support others to do the same. The Mental Fitness Charter contains various training and programming initiatives in mental health fitness for Rugby League communities in all 21 participating nations. The Charter has a special focus on youth rugby players and their parents with the aim of making lasting and generational

changes to the way mental ill health is understood and treated.

What does Prince Harry know about mental health? A lot. All the data about adverse childhood experiences (ACES) applies to princes, too. Both Prince Harry and Prince William

have publicly spoken about their mental and emotional challenges after the death of their mother, Princess Diana of Wales. Since then, the brothers have partnered with the Heads Together Campaign to end stigma and change the conversation around mental health in Britain. Last year, they supported development of Shout, a UK-based app with 24/7 free crisis support texting similar to Crisis Text Line in the United States. Harry and William also joined spouses Meghan and

Kate on advertisements for a mental health awareness campaign called "Every Mind Matters."

Developers have started construction on a six-story office building on East 149th Street near the Major Deegan Expressway.

“I think it’s incredibly exciting to be

offering Class A office space to Bronx businesses and nonprofits,” said Gifford Miller, principal of Signature Urban Properties. “What that means is that people who are part of the growth going on in this borough can provide these jobs here. People who are building businesses can afford to dream about building them in the Bronx.”

The holiday season may be over, but Marko Vuorinen is

still being moved by the vision of Christmas trees.

The Finnish photographer and filmmaker has become engrossed by the sight of trees discarded on the curb after Christmas.

“I started feeling sympathy for the trees — abandoned, left alone, forgotten,” Vuorinen

said. “They had just been the center of attention, and now they’re just thrown away.”

Vuorinen, currently in the city while working on a documentary project, began photographing the curbside trees, which conjured up images of another type of abandonment.

“I actually started seeing the trees as people, huddled together for warmth. The shape of them reminded me of homeless people laying on the street,” he said.

Based in Helsinki, Vuorinen’s work focuses on social issues and gender equality. He has

made several documentaries that tell the stories of women, and has also journeyed repeatedly to New York City to conduct photography sessions.

Among his documentaries are the 2018 portrait Vianey, about the life and hardships of the Bronx-based underground hip-hop artist Vianey Otero, known by the stage name So Icey Trap, and the 2014 film Tamara W. about actress-dancer-rapper Tamara W., who shares vignettes from her life as a transgender girl growing up in the Bronx and her struggles with addiction and abuse.

“Basically, social justice,

empathy, human rights and equality in an urban environment are the driving themes of my work,” he explained. “What this word needs is more empathy. If you really want to make a long lasting impact on people and the world, empathy is the starting point.”

For several years, Vuorinen has focused on a series of photographs of people sleeping in New York City.

“I documented how people take ownership of public realm by sleeping in public in New York City, in parks, libraries, benches, stairs and on sidewalks,” he said. “I felt that to be able to sleep in a public space is a sign of confidence and trust in other people.

That basically the world is still driven by goodness, and that you can trust other people to leave you be safely as you close your eyes surrounded by strangers.”

Vuorinen has taken about 20 photos of the abandoned Christmas trees, which he plans to display online.

“What I’m hoping for is that people start recognizing homeless people and have more empathy for them,” he said. “There are many homeless in the city, and they deserve empathy and not being forgotten.”

are witnessing growing competitiveness and intensity in sports, which has led to increased injuries, mental stress, and exhaustion among many athletes. By taking a public stand with their new Mental Health Charter, Prince Harry and the entire Rugby Football League are modeling a movement to get sports reconnected to their healthy roots that support, rather than harm, mental health - even at the most competitive levels.

Men, mental health, and rugby. Rugby is a sport dominated by men: 93% of the 42,000 Rugby league players and 70% of spectators are male. So while the Rugby League's Mental Health Charter explicitly includes all athletes, it most definitely provides an opening for more conversation about male mental health. The Rugby League has already started to tackle the importance of talking about mental health for men. On World Mental Health Day 2019, international rugby stars spoke out about suicide prevention and the statistic that a man dies by suicide every minute – 80 men for every 80-minute game of the Rugby World Cup. It is hard to solve problems in the dark, and these conversations really do have the potential to serve as beacons for change.

Stepping up to launch the Mental Fitness Charter with the Rugby League was brilliant. It is clear to me that both the beginning and end of the week were all about mental health for Harry and Meghan. Stepping back from the role of "senior" royals to reclaim some privacy, focus on each other and their young

family and develop their own pursuits are all good for mental health.

remarked. “This is the first one from the ground on up that’s happened in the Bronx in many, many years.”

Kirk Goodrich, a partner at Monadnock Development, said the building’s proximity to subway and bus lines made it an appealing spot to build commercial space.

“We really wanted to do something that was a job creator and commercial because the access to transportation is unbelievable in the location,” said Goodrich, who also noted that Hostos Community College is two blocks away. “It’s easy to get to and has good access to community amenities.”

Located at 110 East 149th Street, the project is the latest collaboration between Signature Urban Properties and Monadnock

Development, as the two recently completed construction on a 300-unit residential complex nearby. Díaz said the office building would provide job opportunities for tenants at the new housing complex.‎

“A lot of Bronxites wind up going to other boroughs in order to get jobs,” he said. “We want to keep jobs here in the Bronx. We want to create them here. And we want to have employers feel like there’s a home here for them in the Bronx.”

The building was designed by Dattner Architects.

Miller said that construction began in September 2019, and the groundbreaking marks the start of above-ground work.

“The foundations are all in,” he said. “We should complete the construction by December [2020].”

La temporada de fiestas puede haber terminado, pero Marko Vuorinen aún

se siente conmovido por la visión de los árboles de Navidad.

El fotógrafo y cineasta finlandés absorto al ver los árboles desechados en la acera después de Navidad.

“Comencé a sentir simpatía por los árboles: abandonados, solos, olvidados”, dijo Vuorinen, quien actualmente se hospeda en la ciudad mientras trabajaba en un proyecto documental.

“Acababan de ser el centro de atención, y ahora simplemente son desechados”.

Vuorinen comenzó a fotografiar los árboles de la acera, que evocaron imágenes de otro tipo de abandono.

“En realidad comencé a ver los árboles como personas, acurrucados juntos para sentir calor. Su forma me recordó a las personas sin hogar que yacen en la calle”, dijo.

Con sede en Helsinki, la obra de Vuorinen se centra en cuestiones sociales y en la igualdad de género. Ha realizado varios documentales que cuentan historias de mujeres y también ha viajado repetidamente a la ciudad de Nueva York para realizar sesiones de fotografía.

“Básicamente, la justicia social, la empatía, los derechos humanos y la igualdad en un entorno urbano son los temas principales de mi obra”, explicó. “Lo que este mundo necesita es más empatía. Si realmente quieres tener un impacto duradero en las personas y el mundo, la empatía es el punto de partida”.

Entre sus documentales se encuentra el retrato Vianey, de 2018, sobre la vida y las dificultades de la artista de hip-hop clandestinoa Vianey Otero, con sede en el Bronx, conocida por el nombre artístico So Icey Trap, y el del 2014, Tamara W., sobre la actriz, bailarina y rapera Tamara W., quien comparte anécdotas de su vida siendo una niña transgénero que creció

en el Bronx y sus luchas contra la adicción y el abuso.

Durante varios años, Vuorinen se ha centrado en una serie de fotografías de personas que duermen en la ciudad de Nueva York.

“Documenté cómo las personas toman posesión del dominio público durmiendo en público en la ciudad de Nueva York, en parques,

bibliotecas, bancas, escaleras y aceras”, dijo. “Sentí que poder dormir en un espacio público es una señal de seguridad y confianza en otras personas. Que, básicamente, el mundo sigue siendo impulsado por la bondad, y que puedes confiar en otras personas te permitan estar a salvo mientras cierras los ojos rodeado de extraños”.

Vuorinen ha tomado unas 20 fotos de los árboles de Navidad abandonados, que planea exhibir en línea.

“Lo que espero es que las personas comiencen a reconocer a las personas sin hogar y tengan más empatía por ellas”, dijo. “Hay muchas personas sin hogar en la ciudad, y merecen empatía y no ser olvidadas”.
