We do IT in power
Advanced use of CIM Integration Platform
The Next Steps:
• Utility Analytics
• Backup Control Center
• Universal Head End
Multitude of IT systems from various vendors:• Lack of cross-system integration
• Not all relevant data is shared
• Common data not in sync and up to date
Classic point-to-point integration:• A separate interface needs to be developed between each and
every IT system
• Number of interfaces grows exponentially with the number of integrated systems (N:N)
• Integration of new system is resource, time and knowledge demanding
• Changes / upgrades to one integrated system require updates to all its interfaces

Challenges of integration
CIM based solution – our approach
WEB.CIM Integration Platform
• CIM standard based integration platform integrates various systems (SCADA, DMS, EMS, MDM, GIS, ERP, Asset Management,…) within utility’s IT landscape
• Serves as communication broker for real-time data exchange between all interconnected IT systems
• All data is unified and exchanged in CIM standard format
• Backed by CIM repository as a centralized database with snapshot data from all integrated IT systems

Components of WEB.CIM integration platform:
● CIM Integration Bus: Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) based messaging bus with the following standard public interfaces:
• SIDMS – System Interfaces for Distribution Management Systems (IEC 61968)
• CIS – Component Interface Specification (IEC 61970-4XX)
● CIM Interfaces (source system side):
• IT system API access interface
• Integration & transformation logic
● CIM Database (main repository): Containing all objects and attributes of all the integrated systems
● WEB.CIM Modules: Platform administration and configuration
CIM integration platform benefits
• Better data quality, derived from data unification across all the existing IT systems
• Optimization of the work process – less administrative work is needed to manage data across the systems
• The solution serves as a backbone for all further IT system expansions, assuring high overall scalability and lower TCO
• Integrated, smart grid ready IT landscape

Utility analytics – problems & challenges
Rapid data volumes growth – how to efficiently manage it?
Multitude of IT systems (SCADA, DMS, EMS, MDM, GIS, ERP, asset management,…):
• lack of cross-system integration
• not all relevant data is shared
• common data not in sync and up to date
Proprietary analytical tool with each IT system:• vendor and system specific
• outputs cannot be matched among systems
All of the above makes centralized utility analytics a real challenge.
Big data analysis potential – but often unexploited.

Benefits of CIM for utility analytics
• All relevant business and operational data is integrated, up to date, in sync and centralized – available for easy access and query.
• 360o view of the data enables utilities to improve their demand management, optimize the grid and secure their revenue.
• Any analytical tool can be used – depending on utility size, needs and budget.
• No more dependency on specific proprietary tool, IT system or vendor for analytical reporting.
12
Backup (disaster recovery) control center
• Direct integration of disaster recovery center (SCADA, OMS,…) with CIM integration platform
• CIM integration platform ensures all relevant data in main and backup control center is always in sync
• CIM integration platform can be clustered and mirrored to multiple locations
• Gradual approach – according to utility’s needs and budget
• Industry proved solution – GDB’s own CIM based SCADA and OMS modules already integrated at Slovenian distribution utility

CIM as universal head end
Why should each IT system collect data from the same sources (meters, RTUs, sensors,…) separately?
CIM integration platform as universal head end system:
• All data sources can be merged into a unified model, supplying data from any data source to all high level applications
• Utilizing IEC 61850, DLMS/COSEM, MultiSpeak harmonization proposals, as well as “proprietary mapping” of DNP 3.0, IEC 101/104,…

Evolution of CIM integration platform – next steps
We are at the beginning – CIM still has a vast potential to reveal
There are multiple additional benefits of CIM integration platform –beyond integration, standardization and real-time data exchange.
CIM can transform isolated vertical IT systems into one unified and interconnected horizontal Smart Grid ready system that serves as a basis for a wide variety of functionalities.
In the end it is not just about technical benefits, but more and more about business: securing operations and revenue, lowering TCO and bringing competitive advantage… a road to success!
