ORANGE INSIDER
i t really is incredible, this offensive machine Brian Kelly has built seemingly overnight at the University of Cincinnati.
Kelly, in this third full season at the helm, is 29-6 overall and 9-1 in his last 10 Big East games. A year ago, five different quarterbacks took snaps for the Bearcats and they still finished No. 8 in the nation in scoring, averaging 25.9 points per game, and won their first Big East championship. This season, senior starter Tony Pike, the conference’s leading passer, reinjured his left forearm two games ago and was replaced by sophomore Zach Collaros, and UC hasn’t missed a beat.
The Bearcats, with Pike or Collaros or goodness knows who else behind center, will roll into the Carrier Dome at noon Saturday ranked No. 7 in the nation in total offense, averaging 458.6 yards per game. They are No. 2 in scoring, averaging 40.7 points per game. They are No. 1 in ball security, with only four turnovers. Overall, they are ranked No. 5 in the nation and will be the highest-ranked team to visit the Dome since No. 1 Miami came to town in 2002
(and won 49-7).“They do a great job,” SU coach
Doug Marrone said. …

2009TEAM STATISTICS
SU’SLEADERS
HOWTHEY STACKUP
Running backsUC’s Jacob Ramsey (big) and Isaiah Pead (fast) are productive (6.5 ypc). SU’s Delone Carter and Antwon Bailey are just as good.
Receivers SU’s Mike Williams and UC’s Mardy Gilyard are two of the nation’s best, but overall the Bearcats are deeper and more talented.
Offensive line SU’s much-maligned group made a step forward last week, but UC’s group paves the way for 458.6 yards of offense per game.
Defensive line UC’s 3-4 alignment is great at stopping the run (118 ypg allowed) and pressure (29 sacks). SU’s front four is equally effective.
Linebackers SU’s Derrell Smith has blossomed into one of the nation’s best linebackers. UC, led by Andre Revels (61 tackles), is solid.
Quarterbacks UC’s Tony Pike and Zach Collaros have Brian Kelly’s up-tempo spread down pat. SU’s Greg Paulus was tentative last week.
Secondary UC replaced three starters from 2008 and still has allowed only 5 TD passes all season. SU has allowed three times as many.
Special teams Mardy Gilyard is one of the nation’s most dangerous return men on punts and kicks. SU’s coverage has been poor lately.
