Annual Dental Screening at Northwest School District’s Health Fair

Foundation’s 5K Run/Walk EventOctober 19, 2019 at Lunken Airport

The “Leave No Vet Behind” fundraiser, in memory of Dr. Patty Walter, is right around the corner and it would be super if you could take just three hours of your time to support this worthwhile event. Better yet, bring your entire staff and see which office will win the “Team Spirit” prize. A registration form is included in

this Newsletter or you can register online at: https://www.runningtime.net/Race/OH/Cincinnati/PattyWalterMemorial5K

There are sponsorship opportunities available as well. Email Vicki at [email protected] to learn more about how you can still support this event if you are not able to attend!

Thanks to Dr. Kyle Boyd, Dr. Joe Crowley and Dr. Emma Hudepohl for volunteering to conduct dental screenings on August 13, 2019 to 45 children. The Cincinnati Dental Society, for many years, has provided the dental chairs, lights, and dental supplies as well as dental referrals for the parents. The toothbrushes and

toothpaste were donated by Crest Oral-B – Thank you! The instructor at the Butler Tech Colerain’s Dental Assisting Program, Mary Shelton, was there with five of her Senior students. The morning went extremely well, and we even had Miss Rosie Red stop by for an exam!

“What Does Joe Know?” By: Dr. Joseph P. Crowley, ADA Past President

Having served on all three levels of organized dentistry, most recently as the American Dental Association president, learn from Joe the issues concerning licensure, legislation and private practice survival. Participants will also have the opportunity to “pick” Joe’s

brain and be better acquainted on why being a member of organized dentistry is important to their future and their practice.

“Better Off Dead?” By: Scott Trent, Financial Planner with Skylight Financial Group

When a typical partnership agreement is put in place, there is an immediate transfer of ownership, profits, and wealth. There is also an immediate transfer of liabilities and risk. Many practices have addressed the risk and potential financial impact of losing a partner or associate due to death, but what about the risk that the ADA

says has a 1 in 4 chance of knocking on your door? Learn ways to protect your practice, as well as tips on recruiting and retaining top talent into your organization.

Participants will learn:

• Protecting the Practice from Unfunded Liabilities• Avoiding a Possible Fire Sale

“Dental Insurance: Common Problems and How to Address Them” By: Christopher Moore, Director of Dental Services and Eric Richmond, Director of Legal and Legislative Services with (Ohio Dental Association

Studies have shown that individuals who have dental benefits are more likely to go to the dentist, take their children to the dentist, receive restorative care and experience greater overall health than those who do not.

While having dental insurance or some other type of coverage enables patients to perceive that they can obtain dental services they otherwise might have felt is out of their reach, it can also present problems for dental practices that are trying to assist their patients in utilizing their dental benefits. This presentation will speak to current dental benefits related issues affecting Ohio dentists and offer solutions to successfully address them.

Participants will learn:

• The area(s) most likely to cause dentists problems with respect to claims and insurance company scrutiny.• The current status of the ODA’s legislative and dental insurance advocacy efforts.• About in-office dental plans or membership plans and legal factors to consider in installing them in a dental practice.• Answers to their legal questions.

“The E-Cig Challenge: Why is it so hard to understand these devices and convince people to quit?” By: Beth Monnin, RDH, MSEd, Assistant Professor of Dental Hygiene, The University of Cincinnati Blue Ash College

Electronic Cigarettes have been in the US market for over 10 years and the rate of use, especially in our youth, has continued to increase. Did you know that there is controversial research about the use of eCigarettes as quit aids, even though almost all devices still contain nicotine and harmful chemicals? Let’s collaborate as a dental community to combat the usage of vaping, especially among our youth.

Participants will learn:

• A very brief history of how eCigarettes emerged and the chemical composition

• Recent statistics of the use of eCigaretters
