Ar. Sagar Shashane (Asst. Director)Alumni of Sir J.J architecture, Mumbai passed out in 2003 Sagar has always been pivot-al for transferring designs from drawing boards to site. The transformations are an impetus to his working ways ahead. What hinge is to joints, Sagar is to Arris. He is a strong connecting link between the design team at Arris, the clients and the site, where the actual game is on. He brings to the firm his immense experience in site handling, project management, and program deliverables on time and as per agenda. Starting 2005, the Trends in Shopping Malls & Multiplexes picked up in India and so did for Arris Architects.

The first mall commissioned and designed was Fun Republic Lucknow in 2006-2007, set a flawless example in terms of design & execution. 2009 marks the completion of Cinemall Vadodara, which was among top 5 malls of the city for a consecutive three years. Started in recession times, slow growth dwarfed speedy construction of FEC Coimbatore, but 2012 the mall was completed with immediate recognition from user community and direct comparisons with its contemporaries, proving the results. Quorum Raipur scheduled for completion in 2013 redefines the multi-use perspective. Hubtown is another project in pipeline that changes design parameters for good. Apart from excelling at the usual mall dynamics, Arris undertakes extensive research for tenant base of the particular location, for a life of minimum 3 years. Also other com-prehensive analysis of light study, temperature controls and sustainable factors that impact choice of design & construction materials, provide impressive advantage.

Project ChallengeThe capital of Chhattisgarh Raipur has been in the throes of the fastest development ever seen in this part of the country since 2010. Since then there has been a demand for high quality commercial realty. It was a pre-requisite for Quorum, to be the paradign shift that the region hasd been waiting for. An absolute superlative quality commercial realty on a strategic location for MNC’s & Indian corporate-a Quorum promise.

Arris SolutionQuorum is structure designed to become the very symbol for the city. An iconic design to represent state's entrepreneurial spirit was the program derivative. Following the avant-garde design philosophy the entire structure appears veiled in a luminous net giving it its identity. The lines flowing through as a melody in concrete. Every little detail is a part of a larger harmonious symphony. The design focus has been laid over the functionality of the structure. Space has been planned in accordance with the needs & requirements of modern business essentials.

QUORUM RAIPURClient Sachin Patel for OBC Infratsructures.

Project ChallengeVadodara was a proportionately a smaller site area as compared to the site requirement. The client proposed for a mixed use development, including retail and cinema. It was a conscious call to make it a two screen multiplex instead of a three screen, to make fit the sanctioned 600 seating.

Arris SolutionThe design team has used a 4.5 mt overhang on either sides of the elevation to accommodate cinema and its requirements. The elevation was designed polygonal with one point constant, so as it to make the structure appear changing its façade at every interval. To further exaggerate it iridium cladding was used as surface treatment, which changes colour with sunlight from purple to terracotta, all shades of copper. Internally too, the placement of elevators is zig zag to allow vertical mobility to be seen by patrons. Furthermore the atrium is covered with Teflon roofing material to exaggerate the height and make it spacious.

CINEMALL VADODARA

Now looking back the distance between Arris’s first ever designed cinema screen and current assignment, makes one feel as if it was only yesterday that we took this plunge.

But 160 screens later, we definitely have a strong learning curve, a definite experiment advantage and a successful regime of multiplexes, nationally and internationally applauded with respectful publications. Innovations in terms of design and additions in terms of usable spaces with variety, thereby contributing to unconventional and state-of-the-art, unbound zones of interaction. The client list is endless with India’s all and every prominent Cinema Exhibitors, likes Inox, Fame, Fun Cinemas, Glitz etc. and now making their International presence with Cine Grand, In Europe.

Project ChallengeThe principle attempt for the design was to break away from the conventional format of following the slopes of the cinemas, in turn bringing about a new brand identity for INOX. Today cinema is not only a source of entertainment but it serves to bring together masses.

Arris SolutionToday our cities boast a pool of individuals from different ethnicities & regions who, in fact, are products of decades and centuries of migration. They are cosmopolitan in true sense. Our design represents a canvas painted by the palette of these cosmopolitan foot-prints. The spectrum of Integral composi-tions of multicolor stripes which represent these different individuals ultimately coming together and forming a vibrant composition.

INOX THANE

Client Fame Adlabs Multiplex- Inorbit Mall, Malad.

Project ChallengePart Renovation and Part Restoration project, the program required creating a solution inclusive of 6 screens, with one Gold Class Seating arrangement, with a central box office. But it was client’s preroga-tive to keep business as usual even during the transition. It was a challenge, to keep the area fully func-tional and completely operational, both logistically and economically, but the design team was up for it.

Arris SolutionThe linear layout of the scheme was effectively used by dividing it in two halves, one functional and the other undergoing renovation. The work started from the centre, the concession lobby and gradually moved its way out to the screens. Giving utmost importance to the patrons and their experience of leisure & relaxation, the central lobby, a common spill-out space, was intentionally kept large, lavish and luminous! The climax of the running drapes culminates into a flood of light that livens up the place by custom made, chandelier. It’s a composition of ceiling suspended acrylic tubes with an inlay of minia-ture LED lights. This creates a single focal point and makes one bold signature statement in a relatively huge lobby. Using Vectors and Parametrics the final upshot was achieved. The Chandelier in plan creates an artistic motif which is then carried forward onto adjacent walls as a reflective element constituting a design language.
