NATIONAL THEATRE LIVENew to The Center, the fi nest theatre from London captured live on stage. National Theatre Live launched in 2009 and its high-defi nition broadcasts have now been experienced by over 3.5 million people around the world. NT Live audi-ences in the U.S. saw Helen Mirren starring in The Audience long before it arrived on Broadway and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time a full year before it became a surprise smash hit. Other NT Live events inlcude productions from the Donmar Warehouse and the Young Vic, both part of London’s equivalent of off-Broadway. The series will include nine screenings, four are listed here, spring season TBA.

OPERA AT THE CINEMANo passport required! Introduced last season, these high-defi nition fi lm screenings of classic operas have taken our audiences to the opera houses of Paris, Berlin, and Vienna. A program of Rising Alternatives, this series brings the world’s richest cultural spectacles to you, all within a short drive from home. The season will inlcude four screenings; they take place on Sunday afternoons at 2pm.

George Farquhar’s 1707 play isa “rom-com” of love and cash in which two young men who have blown through their fortunes share one goal: to marry for money. Directed by Simon Goodwin, this wild comedy was applauded by Time Out: “This Restoration romp is a lot of fun!”

Benedict Cumberbatch, star of Sherlock and Oscar nominee for The Imitation Game tackles one of the most challenging roles in the English theater in a production directed by Lyndsey Turner. The 2 ½-month West End run sold out weeks before its fi rst scheduled performance.

A new production of Puccini’s fi fth opera and fi rst masterpiece, a tale of jealousy, turmoil, despair and the dreams of society’s lower class-es. Paolo Arrivabeni conducts the classic opera with stage direction by Claire Servais and Barbara Haveman singing the title role.

From Austria’s Bregenz Festival, this spectacular production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute, sung in German, features fire-spewing “dragon dogs,” mythical creatures oper-ated by puppeteers, and dozens of stunt artists in this staging by David Pountney and conducted by Patrick Summers.
