Review Questions: Session 1 Project
Review Question 3: List and explain the different phases in the SDLC
Planning – Organization’s total information system needs are identified, analyzed, prioritized, and
arranged.
Analysis – System requirements are studied and structured.
Design – The description of the recommended solution is converted into logical and then physical
system specifications.
Implementation – The information system is coded, tested, installed, and supported in the
organization.
Maintenance – Information system is systematically repaired and improved.
Review Question 4: List and explain some of the problems with the traditional waterfall SDLC
System requirements “locked in” after being determined (can't change), Limited user involvement
(only in requirements phase), Too much focus on milestone deadlines of SDLC phases to the
detriment of sound development practices.
Review Question 5: What are CASE tools?
Software tools that provide automated support for some portion of the systems development
process.
Review Question 6: Describe each major component of a comprehensive CASE system. Is any
component more important than any other?
Diagramming Tools – enable system process, data, and control structures to be represented
graphically.
Computer display and report generators – help prototype how systems “look and feel.” Makes it
easier for system analyst to identify data requirements and relationships.
Analysis tools – automatically check for incomplete, inconsistent, or incorrect specifications in
diagrams, forms, and reports.
Central Repository – enables the integrated storage of specifications, diagrams, reports, and
project management information.

Documentation generators – produce technical and user documentation in standard formats.
Code generators – enable the automatic generation of program and database definition code
directly from the design documents, diagrams, forms, and reports.
Problems and Exercises: Session 1 Project
Problem 3: Compare Figures 1-2 and 1-3. What similarities and differences do you see?
They both have the same phases. In Figure 1-2 the project can return to an earlier phase if
necessary. Whereas in Figure 1-3 you are constantly cycling through the phases at different levels
of detail.
Problem 4: Compare Figures 1-2 and 1-4. Can you match steps in Figure 1-4 with phases in Figure 1-2?
How might you explain the differences between the two figures?
Figure 1-4 has the basic phases of Figure 1-2. The difference is the DOJ SDLC is a little more complex
using ten phases.
