Happy Valentines Day to all ACS Cincinnati Local section members!
Hope you enjoy plenty of Chocolate for the month of February…I know I
will! There are some very interesting articles on the “Chemistry of Choco-
late” by doing a quick web search. As a Chemist, its important to not only
think about chemistry in our work lives but everyday lives as well. For
example, Theobromine is a stimulant found in chocolate and comes from
the same family of compounds as caffeine; the darker the chocolate the
higher the concentration of Theobormine. Something to think about if you
have a choice between milk chocolate or dark chocolate.
This past month we had a great turn out for the January 2016 local meeting
at Mt St Joseph University. Thank you to Jamie Titus and the rest of the
Mt St Joe faculty for helping to coordinate and pull off a great event! We
had the pleasure (enjoyment) of having Professor Al Hazari speak on the
topic of “A Fun (but Educational) History of Chemistry.” I had met Al
this past year at the ACS National Meeting in Boston, and was very excited
welcome him back to Cincinnati. His presentation was great for educators
and chemist that help with public outreach efforts. He was able to show
fun, yet educational, ways of speaking to the general public/kids about
chemistry concepts. I know I walked away with some new tools for my
chemistry demo toolbox.
On Thursday February 18th, the Cincinnati Section will host the February
Meeting at Procter & Gamble Mason Business Center. Dr. Glenn Boutilier,
recently retired from P&G and one of the most respected VMS member is
our featured presenter. He will speak on the topic of “Mastery and Other
Critical Attributes for Successful Innovation.” I have known Glenn since I
started at P&G, and am positive that this will be a great talk that you won’t
want to miss.
ACS CERM 2016 is in full steam ahead! Please plan to show your support
for the ACS Central Regional Meeting in May 2016. Dan McLoughlin and
Roger Parker are organizing this conference. If you or your company
would like to help support this effort, please go to this website for more
