the city council is currently working with local people to develop regeneration plans

for Filwood Broadway – including the provision of a supermarket. We want to hear more local views, so please come and comment on the ideas for change in october. the plan for Filwood Broadway will include ideas for:

• Jobs and new shops • Public areas – including street furniture, lighting, car parking• Play and green spaces and• Community facilities.

Separately, the homes and communities agency, the owners of Filwood Park and the Hangar Site, will be consulting with local people to develop proposals for these areas. these proposals will include: a high quality park, new employment space and jobs, and new homes of varying types, including affordable homes. details on this will follow.

Knowle West Regeneration Plan Latest News – consultation this Autumn on plans for Filwood

There will be a consultation on the future for Filwood Broadway at Filwood Library, Filwood Broadway. Come along and comment. You can:

• Drop in between 10am – 8pm on Thursday 20th October, where the team willexplain the ideas to you, or

The experience of shopping on Filwood Broadway has changed

over the years and this autumn is no exception, seeing a series of changes and new openings.

The General Store and All Occasions gift shop are under new management and two new food outlets have fired up their ovens and opened their doors.

The Red & White Café, a family-run business whose owners live locally, opened in July. The café has a Bristol City theme and the walls are decorated with signed football shirts, framed photographs and two large paintings by local artists Stae and Turoe. Owner Lee Francis said: ‘Ray Cashley, ex-City goalkeeper, recently came in and signed his photo, which was nice. We’ve had a really positive response from the community.’

Non Solo Pizza, across the road at 35 Filwood Broadway, offer an

extensive menu of Italian food and a delivery service (call 07966 104012 for more details.)

re:store (16 Filwood Broadway / 0117 963 2521) continues to sell furniture, small electrical goods, paint and treasures. This autumn they will be bringing in a range of reclaimed building supplies - sinks, baths, radiators, doors, roof tiles and paving slabs. A new furniture store is also set to open at the opposite end of Filwood Broadway.

Fabulous Hair & Beauty Salon has taken on two newly-qualified hairdressers and they are offering reduced prices for their treatments whilst they gain more experience, including a cut and blow dry for £15.

Finally, the butchers are looking to start making their own sausages including beef and a variety of flavours of pork - all in time for Christmas!

Most of your crops will probably have been

harvested by now, with a few exceptions such as late parsnips (all the better tasting for a touch of frost) or brussels sprouts.

November is the time to sow over-wintering Broad Beans (especially Aquadulce Claudia) and Japanese Onions (e.g. Senshyu) to get a good start over spring-sown varieties. It is also probably your last chance to plant spring-flowering bulbs before the ground becomes too frozen, as forecasts are for early snows.

Why not be conscientious and prepare for the 2012 season this side of Christmas? Wash and disinfect all pots, seed trays, etc, that you’re planning to re-use; give your cold frame / greenhouse / polytunnel a good clean; then sit down with a well-earned drink and spend the rest of those dark, wintry evenings looking through seed catalogues and designing next year’s garden.

and disability teams at Filwood community centre this summer.

over the last few months young people have been taking part in a variety

of activities and making positive choices about what they do in their spare time. this just goes to prove that with all the bad publicity young people have received recently due to the riots around the country not all young people are like that.

FISHINGover a period of six weeks

14 young males regularly went to hunstrete lakes to do some fishing. some had never fished before whereas others were more experienced, having been on courses with us before. i’m pleased to say they all caught fish, with the record so far being a 15lb carp.

HORSE COURSEWe recently completed two

six-week courses on horse care at

horse World. a total of 20 young people (mainly girls) have taken part to learn how to care for a four legged friend. on the last session the young people get to ride - parents can see this - and receive awards.

BUSH CRAFTin august, when the sun shone

well for three or four days, 18 young people did some bush craft on the northern Slopes. this was a quick insight into survival skills. they made shelters, cooked over an open fire, walked around the slopes and were shown how they could survive by eating some of the things growing in the wild. they cooked fish aboriginal-style, with some even eating fish eyes.

GRAFFITIyoung people also did some

graffiti art at Filwood Community centre; the results are at the rear of the building and can be seen on the front cover of this issue. they worked with local graffiti artist and living legend Ben Stutt who also left his mark in black and white.

Avon and Somerset Police has changed its non-emergency

number to 101.Although 999 is a well-

recognised number to report emergencies, the 2010 British Crime Survey found that only half of the public knew which number to call if they wanted to speak to their local police about policing, non-urgent crime and anti-social behaviour issues.

Part of a national programme, 101 will provide the public with an easier and more memorable number to contact the police.

Calls to 101 will cost 15p per call, irrespective of how long that call may last and applies to landlines and mobile phones.

People who are deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired will be able to textphone 18001 101.

101 will replace the existing non-emergency number for Avon and Somerset Police (0845 456 7000).

101 or 999?• 101 will not replace 999. • 999 should be used in an emergency, such as when a crime is in progress, when there is danger to life or when violence is being used or threatened.• 101 should be used for all non-emergencies such as reporting a crime, contacting local officers, getting crime prevention advice, making an appointment with a police officer or making them aware of policing issues in your local area.

a photography exhibition exploring how young people are viewed and represented

will be displayed at KwmC this autumn, following a project with 13 young people, supported by the Prince’s Trust. ‘shooting “youth”’ is part of the truth about youth project, which aims to challenge and change negative perceptions

of young people. during their three-week course, the group of 18-24 year olds learned a range of photography skills, visited exhibitions at Tate modern and mShed, and interviewed dawn Primarolo, mP for bristol south, at the Houses of Parliament in london. their work will be exhibited from 17th october.

Knowle West Media Centre is looking for 40 residents to take part in our exciting new 3-E Houses project.

Is your energy use really high?

Would you like to cut your bills and make your home more eco-friendly?

The project will run for a year until February 2013. Participation is dependant on existing metering systems. We will need to visit your home to check we are able to

measure your energy consumption.

Do not fear the ‘efergy’ is here and it will show you a way to actually see the di�erence in your pocket. Take the monitor from room to room and every time an appliance is turned on or o� the monitor will show you what uses the most electricity.

We had our biggest shock

microwave and kettle at the

same time- we had no idea it

was costing so much!

important it is to save energy in your home to

protect the future of the planet, but did you know that you can save £250 a

year in the process?

One of our Carbon Makeover families has been testing the ‘efergy’ out and they have been amazed at the results. They are going to tell you their story in the hope that it inspires you to save energy and the future of the planet….

Hi, my name is Heather and this is my 10 year old daughter Carrie. We are

from Knowle West and are part of the Carbon Makeover. We are both very interested in ways to do more to save

the environment and of course saving money is

a good thing too!

How to install the ‘efergy’ – the geeky bitThere are 3 parts to the ‘efergy’, the sensor, the transmitter, and the monitor.

Locate your electricity meter at home and clip the sensor around the live feed cable. This is usually the �rst cable on the right under the meter.

Plug the wire from the sensor into the middle connection in the transmitter.

When we first had the ‘efergy’ we found the

instructions very complicated so we wanted to make it

easier for you. However once we got used to the ‘efergy’ we got very excited about

checking out the amount we were spending by turning

off bars on the elec fire and comparing our energy saving light bulbs to normal ones!
