CIPHI OBSERVER
President’s Message Hello members,
Spring has finally arrived in Saskatchewan after a long winter. Your SK Branch Executive has been busy
on many fronts.
SK Branch Executive met in Saskatoon in April for regular branch business meeting. Councilors are busy
with new portfolios. Mike McCann is our Provincial BOC Coordinator and has taken the role of
marketing and merchandise as of this spring. He has resourced CIPHI SK Branch stickers that look great
and are available for order. Your SK Branch Executive is always looking for merchandising/marketing
ideas. Please forward ideas to Mike at [email protected].
Kristin Waroma is our Advocacy Chair. She is working with the national committee for Environmental Public Health Week 2015. This
week is to be recognized September 21st-25th across our nation in 2015. Information and resources for the week will be distributed when
available. Kristin is also interested in leading the charge to host a branch social golf event sometime in September. SK Branch will keep
you updated on details and timing of the event. Consideration is being given to scheduling the Monday evening before PEDS.
Kevin is our correspondent to First Nations University of Canada Environmental Health and Science Program. Kevin attends advisory
committee meeting at FNUniv and is working with Leanne Stricker of FNUniv to involve students within our Branch. Leanne Stricker
can be reached at [email protected].
Brad Giesbrecht is our Chair for our 8th Annual Professional Education and Development Seminar to be held September 29th and 30th in
Regina. He is working to secure exhibitors, sponsors and speakers in preparation for the event. If you have exhibitors and/or speakers
you would like to see at our event, please forward information to Brad at [email protected].
Our Historian, Ryan Philipation, is always looking for photos of members and other memorabilia from the past. Ryan has been successful
in compiling all Branch minutes digitally and will now work to catalog other documents and photos.
An ongoing thank you goes to Paul Ross and Ken Cross for keeping the financials and the records in great order.
Thank you to Jon Gaudry, who has finished 2 terms as our Saskatchewan Branch Council of Professional Experience (CoPE)
representative. Jon has done an excellent job for CIPHI on a national and provincial level. He has also presented on behalf of CoPE at
our Professional Education and Development Seminars (PEDS) to provide updates on CPCs, logging PDHs and general updates. Thank
you to Jon for your commitment.
Jon will work with our new SK Branch CoPE representative Peter Ross over the next couple of
months to transition Peter fully into the role. Congratulations and a warm welcome to Peter Ross as
our new SK Branch CoPE representative. Peter will fill the role as SK Branch CoPE representative
for the next three year term. As always, please contact me or any of your SK Branch Executive with
comments or questions and to get involved with your Branch. You can follow us at www.ciphi-sk.ca,
on twitter at CIPHI_SK and on Facebook at CIPHI SASKATCHEWAN.
Respectfully,
Kari Engele-Carter

Hand Hygiene hits morning TV
with Shawna Stevens, Regina
Qu’Appelle Health Region,
Environmental Health, Public
Health Inspector and Team Scrub
Captain. Hand Hygiene isn’t just
important in a hospital
environment, it’s equally
important to remember in our
daily lives. Team Scrub brings the
importance of hand hygiene to
kids across Regina, making them
a part of Team Scrub and
teaching them proper hand
washing techniques through fun,
interactive activities and games.
These kids, as Team Scrub
members, teach hand hygiene to
their family members and
promote the prevention of the
spread of germs and bacteria.

Greetings fellow members from the Saskatoon Health Region.
Over the past several months our department has undergone significant restructuring, and most notable is a name change for our department. We are now known as Environmental Public Health instead of Safe Communities in order to better reflect our scope of practice and our involvement in public health. Several staffing changes have also occurred that have in turn changed the leadership structure within our office. The following will sound like a major federal government cabinet shuffle.
Treena Abdellatif has taken a two year leave of absence to accept the role of Environmental Health Advisor with the Northern Inter-Tribal Health Authority. We all wish Treena the best of luck in her new position.
Michael Newell has moved to the position of Food Safety supervisor for the two year term while Treena is on leave.
Terry Gibson has moved from his former position as Built Environments supervisor to a full time PHI position.
Brent Latimer has transferred his supervisor duties from Environmental programming to the Built Environments portfolio.
The Environmental Programming Portfolio which includes plumbing, on site wastewater, public water, and land use has been moved to a senior PHI position which has been accepted by Kari Engele-Carter.
John Bartram has also accepted a one year term as a Senior PHI responsible for the Recreational Water program as well as Injury Prevention.
Matthew Shumaker will be moving from the Humboldt office to the Saskatoon office, and Andreas Giannios will be moving out of the Humboldt office.
Finally, Gage Bonneville has accepted a position as a full time inspector that was vacated by John Bartram.
With summer quickly approaching we are preparing for our wide variety of special events that happen in and around the Bridge City, along with the seasonal uptake in plumbing and on-site wastewater inspections. Coupled with all this has been the roll out of the Hedgehog inspection system. While there have been some growing pains for our office moving from an older version of Hedgehog .NET to the provincial system the transition has been moving a bit smoother than anticipated.
Here is to hoping you all have a wonderful summer.
