Farce is one of our most enduring and influential dramatic forms. Farces over three hundred years old are still making people laugh today. The recipe for Farce is simple and time-honored. First, take a handful of stock characters that reflect our too-

human faults and failings: pride, greed, lust, deceit, jealousy, snobbery – all the good stuff. Add to this a simple plot-premise, throw in a tiny problem or obstacle, and watch as the mixture ferments. Misunderstanding multiplies miraculously, manic desperation sets in, and fantastic stratagems are wildly improvised. Yet the poor sap who started it all has the irrational and unshakeable belief that if he can survive the next two minutes, everything will be alright. He’s always horribly and hysterically wrong.

While Farce is relentless in pointing out human idiocy, it is also very forgiving of it. Despite everybody’s flaws, things always turn out right in the end–usually by the luck of blind Fate, seldom by the wisdom of the character.

“French Farces are usually about sex; British Farces are about class; American Farces are about money.”

- Terry Teachout, the New York Times

The word ‘farce’ is originally French, and means ‘stuffing,’ in the culinary sense or ‘padding’ in the sense of padding a speech or presentation. The first farces, back in the late middle ages, were just this second kind of stuffing – short comic plays to pad the short breaks in those long and very serious presentations, Morality Plays. I imagine that for the common person, those early farces were a welcome respite from five hours of compulsory uplifting of the soul.

Italy, of course, was for Europe the mother-lode of all things cultural, and Commedia dell Arte became popular all over the continent, but nowhere so much as in Paris. By 1650 or so the plays were no longer improvised, and the literary side of farce began to be emphasized, as the actors switched languages from their native Italian to French, took on native actors, and began to work with the greatest writers of the time, from Moliere to Marivaux, to Goldoni, Dufresny, Regnards, La Motte, Lefranc, and a host of others. The plays were now being sponsored by the nobility, who often have the knack, if they see the common man enjoying something, of claiming it as their own and putting the price up–now the plays were performed indoors, and you had to buy a ticket. Farce thrives on social upheaval, the death of old ways, the difficult birth of new, and has always been a good vehicle for social commentary. No modern form of drama carries it’s own history with it as much as farce, and none is more capable, not only of mere survival, but of complete regeneration.

MARC CAMOLETTI (Playwright) was a French playwright best known for his classic farce Boeing-Boeing. Camoletti was born on November 16, 1923, a French citizen in Geneva, Switzerland, though his family had Italian origins. His theatrical career began in 1958 when three of his plays were presented simultaneously in Paris, the first, La Bonna Anna, running for 1300 performances and going on to play throughout the world. Boeing-Boeing (1962)

was an even greater success, and remains Camoletti’s signature hit. The original London production, in an adaptation by Beverley Cross and Francis Evans, opened at the Apollo Theatre, transferred to the Duchess, and ran for seven years, racking up more than 2,000 performances. A later play, Don’t Dress for Dinner, also ran for seven years in London, again transferring from the Apollo to the Duchess. Camoletti’s plays have been performed in numerous languages in 55 countries. In Paris alone, 18 of his plays have totaled around 20,000 performances in all. Ten of his plays have also been shown on television, the most recent being Sexe et Jalousie. Camoletti was an Associate of the Société Nationale des Beaux Arts. He was awarded the Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur, one of France’s highest honours. He died July 18, in Deauville, on the Normandy coast, in 2003.

ROBIN ARMSTRONG (Director/Costume Designer) returns to Circle Theatre to direct the first show of the Theatre’s 30th Anniversary Season. Robin most recently directed Circle’s production of Bright Ideas, and Collin Theatre Center’s production of Hello Human Female. She is scheduled to direct Becky’s New Car and Seven in One Blow at Circle Theatre, later this season. In 2010, Robin directed Circle Theatre’s critically acclaimed production

of Bach at Leipzig, which garnered multiple Dallas Critics’ Forum Awards, for Outstanding Direction, Outstanding Creative Contribution (for fight choreography and costume design), and Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble Cast. Bach at Leipzig was also cited on the “Year in Review Top Ten List” for Dallas Voice, Critical Rant and Rave, The Fort Worth Star-Telegram, The Dallas Observer, Theater Jones and D Magazine. Previously, Robin directed Circle Theatre’s productions of Snake in the Grass, Unnecessary Farce, and Incorruptible. Robin also directed productions of Vincent River; Macbeth; Betrayal; Hay Fever; The Day After the Fair; and No Sex, Please, We’re British! for Theatre Britain. Robin earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in Directing from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Theatre from Louisiana State University.
