TESTING GROUND aims to entertain, surprise, stimulate and provoke by giving dance artists from Bristol and further afield a platform for testing new works-in-progress, and audiences the chance to share constructive thoughts on what’s just been seen.

Performances by four artists/companies, emerging and established, will be immediately followed by a question and answer session with the audience.

Testing Ground provides a highly supportive and nurturing platform for the artists involved, and offers audiences the opportunity to get an insight into new work and engage in conversation with those making it.

The choreographers and performers really do want to know what you think and your feedback will play a vital part in helping develop the work to be as inventive, engaging, skilfull and ambitious as it can be. So come to discover what these artists are working on right here, right now. Grab a drink in the bar, and then answer and post questions about the pieces on show.

Natalie Reckert is a handbalancer who loves to dance to electronic beats and read Wikipedia articles about load experiments. Above all she is interested in the random, odd and deep reasons for being on stage.

Image is her first solo show. A human being is a construction made out of hot chocolate, pieces of liquorice and a cherry, which is my head and which is about to explode.

Image is a a performance where stand-up comedy meets electro-robotics in a feat of handstand endurance. It is a funny and frivolous self portrait of a circus performer. A highly skilled one-woman experiment testing the limits of the body and the stability of quite a few eggs...

Co-directed by Caroline Intrup

“If Kraftwerk made circus, it would look something like this. I just wanted to see it

again and again.” Adrian Berry, Artistic Director

Homer’s epic poem is retold in this extraordinary dance theatre production.

The King, Odysseus (Christopher Tandy) separated from his family for ten years of brutal war, faces another ten year struggle to return home as a reckless God (Jonathan Goddard) drags him on an epic journey across oceans to strange lands and the darkness beyond.

Immortal beauties, shape shifters, monsters and sorcerers both guide and torment the king as he hurtles towards a savage and desperate reunion with his Queen.

The cast and creative team that brought you the multi award-winning Dracula present a vision of a broken world, from faded New York pageants to islands of fantasy; brutal seas, battlefields and a gateway to Hades.

Set to music ranging from Mozart to Mark Lanegan; Sacred Arias to The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, and an originally composed score; this Odyssey is of now - contemporary horror and fantasy splintering from ancient myth, the themes universal: how we face our mortality and the driving force of the Gods inside us.

The Odyssey is presented as part of the new Tobacco Factory Theatres BEYOND off-site season which sees Tobacco Factory Theatres presenting work in fascinating venues all over Bristol, bringing its matchless spirit to new people and championing epic theatre in intimate and unusual spaces. This company of 11 emerging artists from all over the world trained under the same roof in Bristol for three years—spinning, flying, catching and hanging upside down, or rather, falling, dropping and getting back up again. Either way, it was fun.

The Circomedians combine different theatre forms with traditional circus disciplines to create fresh and exciting performances. Join them for an evening of cabaret-style entertainment and a lot of laughs as they wave goodbye to their time in training before venturing into the wide world.

It’s late afternoon, and two bartenders open for business. Patrons arrive and place their orders. As they get more communicative, their sudden changes of mood and interaction with the bar staff create comical encounters and chaotic situations.

Expect high energy dancing, acrobatics and theatre as well as insightful observation, humour and wit in this lively and

entertaining take on 21st century social interaction.

Set at a transformable bar and deftly blurring the boundaries between watching and socialising, Bar Story is a new indoor work created in collaboration between Artstrust Productions and Etta Ermini Dance Theatre. The work is a 50-minute portrayal of two bar tenders and a punter engaged in a quirky Saturday night escapade at the local pub. It uses humour, high energy dancing and acrobatics, non-verbal story telling and insightful observation to make an entertaining commentary on 21st century social interaction and communication issues.

Jon Udry Punches Gravity In The Face, knocks centrifugal force on the head with anarchic irreverence.

Not into juggling? Think again! From the moment the show begins you know you are in for something different. More Edinburgh Fringe than Brighton Pier, gone are the cheesy grins, lift music and glitter,

Jon presents the naked art of juggling, deconstructing elements of danger and the pitfalls of performance. Jon’s passion for his craft carries you through the story of his personal journey, illustrated through mesmerising patterns created by colour, sound and object manipulation. The risk inherent in the tricks and the rockstar finale, become a metaphor for Jon’s life, and the story of love and the loneliness of life on the road.

“If you like juggling you will like this guy.”

Gather round for the Moon’s magical story about a tippetty-top tap dancer who he has been watching at night.

Marina Skippett creeps out of her house every night to shuffle and stomp on the boardwalk to the sounds of the sea. She can’t tap dance at home any more since her evil, tractor-sized Aunty banned it! But then, one moonlit night, Marina meets a mysterious, watery boy swimming in the sea and her life is never the same again!

Following sold-out shows at The Wardrobe Theatre and Shambala Festival 2014, The “truly amazing one woman power house” (Guide 2 Bristol) Tessa Bide (maker of Arnold’s Big Adventure and The Melody Makers) is returning with her critically acclaimed solo show, being called “just everything a children’s theatre experience should be” (Childplays). Featuring stunning puppets, original live music and tap dancing that will make you want to stick 50ps to your shoes and join in!

Amina Khayyam Dance Co is a touring company that uses Kathak as the core narrative in making new work; adding to it other media and forms such as theatre, live art, and technology.

The anguishing story of Yerma in Federi-co Garcia Lorca’s savage yet lyrical play featuring a woman who suffers the heart breaking social torment of a childless marriage, that forces her to commit a horrific and irrevocable act, is set to Indian neoclassical dance – Kathak.

Yerma, re-imagined and made relevant by Amina Khayyam for modern Britain and Europe’s new and marginalised communi-ties, from its original setting of rural patri-archal Spain of 19th century, is performed to spectacular live music with tabla, cello and vocals featuring world renowned musicians.

Calculating the stocks of our emotional economy, Smoke and Mirrors weaves acrobatic exploitations and high-flying distortions to examine the contorted state of America in the pursuit of happiness.

Undressing the suit of capitalism, RICOCHET’s nearly naked approach to poetic acrobatics reveals the inner workings of humans, doing their best to find a place of realness and connection in an enduring culture of illusion. RICOCHET deliver an honest, fresh acrobatic perspective to the themes of isolation, oppression, yearning and hope.

ST PAUL’S CHURCH

St Paul’s Church is a grade 1 listed building located on a quiet and leafy Georgian Square. The church is home to Circomedia’s BTEC Diploma, a range of community classes and a programme of international circus, dance and theatre.

The ‘Wedding Cake Church’ is particularly suited to hire for wedding receptions, parties, corporate events and conferences, with a professional team to work with you throughout the planning and delivery of your event to maximise the opportunities our circus venue has to offer.

KINGSWOOD STUDIOS CAMPUS

In addition, Circomedia’s six studios at the Kingswood Estate offer flexible space for hire during our Community Classes, BTEC, Diploma, Foundation Degree and BA ‘down time’. The studios boast a range of equipment and layout/rigging possibilities particularly suited to low impact events such as meetings and workshop/rehearsal space for creative companies and individuals.

Circomedia’s competitive hire rates vary depending on the nature of your event. Please contact us to discuss your plans. [email protected]
