NEW SPEED LIMIT SIGNS POSTED

In case you did not know, it is now official. Newly posted signs confirm the speed limit

throughout the Ranch is 25 miles per hour. The only exception is the few blocks that form Deerfield Avenue, where it is 30 miles per hour.

Driving east on Deerfield requires a STOP when you reach

Normandie. Not only is there a STOP sign, but there is also an alert that CROSS TRAFFIC DOES NOT STOP. This signage was prompted by a pedestrian fatality at this intersection. Deerfield only runs from Yale to Normandie, but this crosswalk is in a very busy intersection, as you can see from the signs posted.

In addition to the STOP and CROSS TRAFFIC warnings, there is a fluorescent PEDESTRIAN CROSSING sign – an international image that should be understood by everyone, regardless of language – and a clarification that from this location forward the SPEED LIMIT IS 25. This is a lot of information for any driver to absorb, so no distracted driving, please! Make sure to STOP and read and acknowledge the information you see in these signs.

Please remember our children walk and ride bikes along this stretch, and we drivers need to be even more aware of what is happening around us. Those signs are there for a reason.

Also, as a courtesy to other drivers, use your turn signal, especially at a busy corner.

This is our neighborhood.

LET’S KEEP IT SAFE!

CELEBRATION IN THE RANCH On Saturday, November 10, the Ranch will

commemorate veterans and current military. It is the day before traditional Veterans Day (November 11), so hopefully it will not conflict with other events you may want to attend.

Supporting our community, Real Estate with Russ sponsors the event. With the help of our local Boys Scouts of America, and anyone else who would like to participate, flags will be placed in front of each home in The Ranch.

Additionally, if you are a veteran, Russ will also include a flag from the branch of military in which you served. If you are a veteran and would like to participate or have a loved one who served in the military, please contact Russ to honor you and your family. Call (949) 383-0830 or email [email protected]

There will also be a memorabilia table. Veterans and family members are encouraged to bring memorabilia to share with others.

Here is the schedule: US flags will be placed in front of every home

in The Ranch by Order of the Arrow, Tsungoni Chapter. If you would like to help out, show up at The Ranch Park at 8 AM.

10 AM The Ranch Veterans Day Celebration begins, featuring the following:

Reveille, Ed Stevens

National Anthem, Lindee McTique

Invocation, US Marine Buck Sergeant

Veterans Roll Call, allowing each veteran, servicemen and family member to share name, rank and any stories of their service or loved one’s service

Memorial, honoring any veteran or service member who has passed away this past year.

Taps, by Mike Petyo

Special Guest Speaker: Colonel Willard A. “Willy” Buhl, USMC (Ret.) who spent 34 years in the “family business” of the Marine Corps and was a personal friend of The Ranch’s military hero, Colonel William Barber. (See page 13 for more on Colonel Buhl.)

RAINY DAY RHOA CLEANUP EVENT – STILL A SUCCESS By Larry Hugo, District 12 Director & Clean-up Chairman

Rain could not dampen the Ranch CLEAN-UP event on October 13. It was a warm and slightly rainy but beautiful day. We hope many of you took advantage of the Dumpsters and now have more room in your garages/homes. We all appreciate those of you who take the time to help clean up, maintain and beautify our Ranch neighborhood; we can’t do it without you.

As usual, we managed to fill several large roll-off dumpsters in about four hours with yard trimmings and household and garage waste.

The Cleanup morning started off by coffee, water and breakfast burritos provided by Jeff Moon of Hanu Reddy Realty.

We also hope some of you took advantage of the prior week Garage Sale on October 6 sponsored by Russ Hansen of Century 21 and the Great Exchange on October 12 to pass on for FREE your still good but not needed items.

The Cleanup/Dumpster Day program is sponsored by your Ranch Homeowners and Renters Association (RHOA) for paid members (annual dues only $30) and is conducted each fall and spring. It is always a fun day to get out into the sun, clean up areas we may have been neglecting, and meet and perhaps help some of your neighbors while either volunteering or dropping off some household waste or old treasures not needed anymore.

When you can, please help your neighbors and even encourage them to maintain our Ranch neighborhood. Let’s do what we can to keep our homes and property looking nice which also helps to keep up property values for all.

NOVEMBER 2018 Ranch Roundup 9

Wesley Snipes was in a movie many years ago called Passenger 57. It was basically a film about a one man’s attempt to take on an airliner hijacking. During the course of the movie he gets engaged in the time-honored bad action hero scene where he talks smack to the European terrorists over the phone. During the phone call Wesley Snipes says, “You ever play roulette?” The mad European terrorist replies, “On occasion.” Snipes responds with the famous phrase, “Well, let me give you a piece of advice. Always bet on black!”

In the world of money and investing, we have been taught time and time again that is it important to build a diversified portfolio to manage the risk that different investment classes can have on our portfolio. However, time and time again we see people who walk through our door who have gone to a ‘Bet It All On Black’ investment strategy by putting most of their eggs in one stock, one asset class, or one business venture. Here are three smart money move ideas on how to prevent from losing the game of roulette by betting it all on black.

Set up an investment policy statement

An Investment Policy Statement ("IPS") is a document, generally between an investor and the assisting investment manager, recording the agreements the two parties come to with regards to issues relating to how the investor's money is to be managed. The presence of an IPS helps to clearly communicate to all relevant parties the procedures, investment philosophy, guidelines and constraints to be adhered to by the parties. It can be seen as a directive from the client to the investment manager about how the money is to be managed, but at the same time the IPS should provide the guidelines for all investment decisions and responsibilities of each party. The key to the investment policy statement is to limit how much of one position you put your cash into at any given time; e.g., the portfolio cannot hold more than 10% in one individual fund or stock.

Have an exit strategy

Whether you made money on a particular investment because of skill or luck, the problem is not having a predetermined game plan on how you will exit out of the investment whether it is an individual stock, a piece of real estate, or a business venture. Far too often over the years, we have seen people get carried away with the thought that the investment they own just simply could not lose money. This type of dangerous ‘bet it all on black’ thinking can be very dangerous to building long term wealth.

Get all of the information

Have you ever heard of someone who invested money in a business that was sure to triple in value? Or perhaps an individual that bought a sure to make return condominium off of some remote beach in the United States? Maybe it was a stock tip of a technology company that was supposed to quadruple in the next year? Before you make any type of investment, you should be sure that you have reviewed all the information carefully. Read the prospectus, examine the profit and loss statements, and spend time doing your due diligence.

Building wealth is a very difficult mountain to climb. Almost every investor at some point in their life spots an opportunity that they believe will get them to the peak in a quicker amount of time. It’s important to make sure you never bet all your money on black, red, or a specific number no matter how sure you are that the investment is sure to make your millions. If you make the wrong decision, you’ll be sure be sitting in the back of the plan forever.

RAINY DAY CLEANUP (…continued)

Director Larry Anderson and previous director Mackayla Wong and her husband Leroy, are enjoying the day (with drizzles) and neighborhood talk at the Rochelle Dumpster Station. Mackayla and her husband Leroy always support the Rochelle station with their friend and neighbor Larry Anderson. In addition, Leroy and his wife Mackayla also manage the wonderful RHOA Fourth of July Parade and Picnic. Their support is endless and so valuable. When you see them please tell them how much their tireless support means to the neighborhood and to you.

THANK YOU to all the Volunteers at the Dumpsters, including the following: Ramon Lugo, Peggy Evans, Larry Anderson, Leroy and Mackayla Wong, Linda Wallace, Reena Bhargava, Jay Baumler, Jeri Carey and Jeff Moon.

When you pass them in the neighborhood please take a moment to thank them for volunteering their time and effort. OTHER THANK YOUs to Jeff Moon for providing breakfast and refreshments for our volunteers

and to Russ Hansen, for sponsoring the previous week’s Garage Sale. It went well.

And last, but DEFINITELY NOT LEAST, a BIG THANK YOU goes to all of you who helped clean up our Ranch neighborhood. As I’ve said before, as I was going around the event to help make sure all went well, I was pleased to see how many folks took time while they were unloading to help someone else with their load, even many times before finishing their own load. That’s part of what makes Irvine neighbors special … Nicely done.

Directors Jeri Carey and Ramon Lugo enjoy some morning conversation at the Cherbourg Dumpster Station. This picture caught two directors here at the mid-morning shift change from Ramon to Jeri. These folks provide endless support to our neighborhood because they care so much. A little rain did nothing to dampen the nice day.

RAINY DAY CLEANUP (…continued)

Director Jay Baumler and his daughter Katie are helping at the Norris Dumpster Station and talking to our good friend and neighbor Wayne MacCartney (left). Jay and his daughter helped folks unload their cleanup day discards. Earlier in the day, Director Peggy Evans helped out at this station. Support like theirs helps keep our neighborhood a great place to live and sets aside the RANCH as a model of real neighborhood support. Thanks again, folks.

DID YOU MISS THE OPPORTUNITY TO USE THE DUMPSTERS? HERE’S SOME INFO:

If you missed out on this most recent “Dumpster Day” and cannot wait until the next event to be conducted in Spring 2019, here are some helpful and/or close by options.

1. The Waste Management local reclamation center at 16122 Construction Circle will take most anything except hazardous waste material for a fee. This one time use fee is usually higher than our annual membership so it pays to keep your membership active.

2. City of Irvine residences are now entitled to four free pickups per year at home for larger items such as sofas, mattresses, furniture, appliances and other items that will not fit into

your trash containers. Due to our limited space, we

can place restrictions on accepting very large items

such as sofas, mattresses etc., to allow better use of

the dumpsters by more residences. To arrange a pickup or for additional information, call Waste

Management customer service at (949) 642-1191 or

check out their website at www.wm.com.

3. Hazardous waste such as paint, solvents, pesticides, gasoline, pool chemicals, motor oil, or batteries can be taken nearby to the Irvine Regional Household Hazardous Waste Center located off Irvine Center Drive and Sand Canyon at 6411 Oak Canyon Ave. right next to the Animal Care Center and Bark Park (just over one mile away). The last posted hours are 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM Tuesday through Saturday. For additional information call 714-834-6752 or look them up online at www.cityofirvine.org/dept. You can also contact Integrated Waste Management directly at (714) 834-4000 or visit www.oclandfills.com.

We hope this information is helpful.

RHOA President Linda Wallace and Director Reena Bhargava monitored the Strasbourg station. Besides helping all their neighbors, they remind us that we can enjoy each other’s friendship even on a rainy day. We see the two directors here at the mid-morning shift change.

These signs remind us that we all need to drive slowly on our RANCH streets and especially so when events like Cleanup days are in process. It is unfortunate that even with the SLOW signs some people drive at a very fast speed past the area. Our RANCH streets are posted at 25 MPH. Please be mindful of this, and remind your spouse, neighbor, kids and visitors to PLEASE SLOW DOWN. It could prevent an injury – or worse – from happening.

RHOA President Linda Wallace and volunteer Jeff Moon monitor the Strasbourg dumpster. In addition to providing breakfast on the go for our monitor volunteers, Jeff contributes regularly at our RHOA activities. Please let him and all our sponsors know that you appreciate their participation in our neighborhood events.
