Both good and bad news ap-pears in the latest NCATB News-letter. The paper is publishedby Tom Wilds for the NationalCongress of Animal Trainers andBreeders.

NCATB reports there is a'Very strong" possibility thatcircus trainers and animal ownersmay soon be able to sell tigersand leopards across state lines. This will be possible under a newprovision of the Endangered Spe-cies Act of 1973, through thecreation of a "captive-bred,self-sustaining population" category.Although there are no animals un-der this listing at the presenttime, the Dept. of Interior isconsidering 17 or 18 animals forsuch a listing.

NCATB also reports that bythe end of this year or sooner, the Indian elephant will be list-ed as "endangered" and chimpswill be regarded as "threatened"animals. This means owners andtrainers will have to become aereof states having special regula-tions concerning such animals andthat no additional imports willbe permitted.

While it will be possibleto transport such animals acrossstate lines, permits will be re-quired for the sale of the ani-mals. Acts will be allowed to continue working, but will find itvirtually impossible to obtainnew animals or replacements.

Their big top, formerlyowned by Bill Voorheis, of Michi-gan, is in its third season andis still in excellent condition. It is a 60 ft round end with oneof the two 30 ft middles beingused. The top was made as a balering, but has been changed foruse as a push-pole this year. The20x20 ft marquee is also in goodcondition.

The 30x40 ft side show topis new this season and has a 50ft canvas bannerline with fourbanners, painted by Gary Hern ofDonna, Texas. Featured in theside show are: fire, magic, pup-pets, snake, baby elephant, sci-cilian donkey and llama.

TERRY CAVARETTA, aerialist, completed a 3̂ somersault on March 12and was successfully caught by her husband-catcher Ron Lemus. Thetrick was accomplished during an outdoor practice session at LasVegas, Nevada.

About ten people were watching the rehearsal and Sandy Dobritchwas in attendance with his movie camera and has it all recordedon film.

Terry and Ron are pictured above with Eva Dunleavy and Judy McCar-dle, who form the Flying Terrels, one of the feature acts now beingpresented at Circus Circus Casino in Las Vegas. Terry, now 23, hasbeen nominated for the Guinness Book of World Records as the onlywoman to consistently perform the triple somersault.

The exciting aerial team has appeared with the Billy Smart's Lon-don Christmas Circus and with the Buglione Circus in Paris. Theyhave also been seen on several ABC-TV specials.

CLASSIC CIRCUS PUT-DOWNStOne of my favorite involves thelate clown BILLIE BURKE and theirascible GEORGE HANNEFORD, Sr.The late Mr. Hanneford was fondof bursting into the clowns' dressing room, show after show, rasp-ing the same worn line: "Anybodyknow where I can get some freshfruit?" - until one day BILLIEBURKE turned and snapped, "Whydon't you try your family tree!"

See You down the road, luvs.

Chapter TwoSouth America! Take It Away!"

A TALL, GOOD-LOOKING young man strolls jauntily intothe Houston Auditorium. "Hey?" he calls, "anybody know where Ican find a flyer with a lot of talent for a little money?"'Try Fay," a voice pipes up.

"Fay who?" The man shifted thebriefcase under his arm.

"Fay Alexander. That littleguy over there pulling on therope."

Jerry Wilson, owner of theGran Circo Americano, strolled ov-er to the prop hand. "I need aflyer . "

Fay looked at him. "I need ajob."

Wilson's eyes scanned thethree flying riggings suspendedoverhead, two of which belonged toArt Concello. Flying act peoplelike Eldon and Joanne Day, Red andJeannie Sleeter , Bones Brown andJoe Romelette were milling aboutthe arena.

Fay noticed Wilson eyeing theriggings. "Which one do you wantme to try?"

A flyer Wilson knew walked up."Don't waste our time, Jerry, takehim. He's good."

Two days later Fay Alexanderleft Houston for Guatemala City.

GRAN CIRCO AMERICANO was a

tent show that played the capitolcities of Central America, stayingfour weeks in each. Fay had beenpromised a hundred dollars a week, paid transportation from city tocity and his only duty was to fly.

"I flew all right. First, wedid a FULL comedy flying act ingreasepaint makeup. Then we strip-ped out of the comedy clothes andwith the makeup still on, did aFULL straight flying act!"

Fay was in his twenties and inperfect shape. "I almost crawledfrom the tent, my tongue hangingout," he sighed, remembering. "Allthose comedy falls into the net, climbing up the ladder, and I wasthrowing doubles in the straightroutine. My hands were like ham-burger."

The bright promise of CentralAmerica clouded right off. "Jerryhad told me stateside not to worryabout the contract, his wife wouldmake one up in Guatemala City. Shedid. In Spanish. Now...I can'tread Spanish, but like a fool Isigned it!"

He is still upset when hethinks about it.

the exchange. I had to pay my own |transportation, and had to work inproduction. It took almost everycent just to exist. I was downthere four months and wound upbroke."

An embittered Fay was nowdesperate enough to try anythingto escape. "I didn't drink at allin those days, but I went out andgot drunk and didn't show up forthe act."

Jerry Wilson, fired with an-ger, went up to young Jimmy Her-rington who did a single trap actthe first two weeks of each en-gagement, left, and went to thenext town the last two to handleadvance.

"Find that son-of-a-bitch!"Wilson exploded.

Jimmy and Fay roomed togetherto cut expenses. When Jimmy re-turned to the hotel, Fay was there

"Look, Jimmy....I've been gi-ven a lousy deal down here. Hepromised me one thing, handed meanother. I'm working my ass off.I don't have any money. He gave mea contract in a language I can'teven speak, let alone read. Now,I want out! I want to go home!"

Jimmy convinced Jerry Wilsonthat he should release Fay. "Buthe can damn well pay his own wayhome," Wilson said, storming outof the office.

Fay wired home for a hundreddollars, ended up with sixty-five

after the exchange. "I had a littlemoney put by, maybe sixty dollarsto add to it. I flew to Miami andtook a train to Los Angeles. Wouldyou believe that when I arrived atthe depot in L. A. I had exactlyone dollar left?"
