History of Cirencester History of Cirencester Golf started near Cirencester in 1893 in some ‘old pastures’ belonging to Earl Bathurst near Park Corner, Sapperton.

The decision by several prominent men to form a golf club was taken on the 30th October 1893 in a solicitors’ offi ce and the Earl Bathurst was elected the fi rst President. The nearby farmhouse was rented and used as a clubhouse.

However, there were diffi culties in keeping the course playable in the summer months and grass cutting was always a problem and expensive.

In 1909, it was decided to look for suitable land on which to develop a new golf course and land at Baunton/Bagendon was leased or purchased from various landowners.

Golf Club est 1910

This new course, situated on a rolling plateau ‘where the eastern slopes of the Cotswolds die away to the plain’ was designed by James Braid and a new clubhouse was built and both offi cially opened for play on May 5th 1910 with an exhibition match. This was between James Braid and Harry Vardon, both of whom were Open Champions and Braid won his last Open a few weeks later.

There were problems during both World War years but, due to the endeavours of dedicated members, the course continued to be played although some land was given up temporarily for War agricultural purposes. Three holes were lost in 1995 due to the construction of the Cirencester by-pass but fortunately land at ‘Baunton Bank’ was able to be purchased and new holes constructed which enabled the club to sur-vive as an 18 hole course. Land was also purchased to construct a 6 hole academy practice area and a further plot for a driving range.

An inviting fi rst tee shot uphill to a generous fairway leaves a short iron left for your second shot.

However, be mindful of leaving your ball below the hole on this deceptively sloping green, a putt from above the hole will be tough to keep on the putting surface!

A tricky par 3 so early on in your round.

The correct club selection is a must to fi nd the correct tier of this two-tiered green and also avoid the bunkers that surround and the out of bounds that aligns the right side of this hole.

A true gem of a par 4, a straight drive needed through the valley will leave a testing second shot to a green that slopes severely from back to front.

The correct club choice must be made for the second shot which is made doubly diffi cult by the swirling wind in the valley – another green where putting from above the hole could prove treacherous

A test of both skill and stamina, this uphill par 4 plays longer than its yardage.

The second shot is key, played up the hill to a very shallow green, take one more club and allow the bank behind the green to feed your ball back onto the putting surface

Do not be deceived by this holes stroke index, the tee shot is best placed up the right hand side to leave a clear shot into a narrow, well bunkered green.

With this green measuring 33 yards in length a miss judged approach shot could make two putting a challenge

One of the tightest driving holes on the golf course, trees line both sides of the fairway and a fairway bunker lies in wait to catch out the bigger hitters.

The green is well guarded by deep menacing bunkers and out of bounds looms tight behind the green.

A hole that requires some thought, the fairway bottle necks tightly at 250 yards with out of bounds lining the left hand side.

A shorter tee shot will leave a mid iron for the second shot, if aggressive off the tee a short pitch for the second shot awaits and a possible birdie opportunity

The longest par 3 on the golf course, with out of bounds lining the left side and bunkers to the right the only way to play safe is to play short and chip up this deep green.

Even the longer hitters will be hitting a lot of club into this par 3 making it a tough challenge for all

Halfway HouseHalfway House

Overlooking the 11th Green and with fantastic views over Cirencester and beyond, the Halfway house was constructed in 2011 with funds raised by the members.

It has probably the nicest course toilets in the county. Snacks, cakes, hot and cold drinks are served on weekends and busy competition days from the kitchen.

Following the longest par 3 is the longest par 4, and the toughest hole on the course.

A tee shot left of the big conifer trees will leave a long second in for all golfers and a couple of strategically placed bunkers loom to catch any stray second shot. A bogey on this tough par 4 is no disgrace and a par will feel like a birdie to even the most skilled golfer

A hole that requires one more club as it plays longer than the yardage suggests.

The green is guarded by large bunkers and a steep slope at the front of the green that deceives most golfers, a shot left short of the putting surface leaves a tricky chip shot up the green

Hole TwelveHole TwelveAnother tight tee shot on this very clever par 5, out of bounds lines the right side of this hole and trees line the left.

If the fairway is found with the tee shot the bigger hitters may decided to go for the green, those who choose to lay up will have to negotiate the three fairway bunkers further down. The green is guarded by out of bounds right and a steep bank to the left, and when reading this green a second look is advised

A short par 3 guarded by very deep bunkers means a missed green will more often than not require your sand wedge for your second shot.

This green will deceive most and when reading your putt allow a little more break as there is more slope than you can see

A tough tee shot played towards the out of bounds awaits on this long par 4 and the severe slope will gather your ball to the left of the fairway, form here you are hitting up the hill to a very long, deep green.

One more club is advised for your second shot as it plays longer than the yardage suggests

Hole Fift eenHole Fift eenA tee shot that avoids the big fairway bunker will leave an approach to a severely sloping green.

This green is well guarded by two bunkers to the left and with it sitting up any shot right or long will run off and away leaving a tough chip shot. Take care when putting; a deft touch is needed to negotiate the severe slopes

Hole SixteenHole SixteenThe green is reachable from the tee for some, but the best way to play this hole is to hit your tee shot just left of the marker post, this will leave a clear second shot and avoid the bunker that guards the right side of the green.

A sloping green awaits with a hidden plateau at the back and be wary of club selection for your second shot, anything long will run down to the next tee and leave a long pitch back

Hole SeventeenHole SeventeenA long uphill par 5 to start the homeward stretch, the tee shot is ideally placed just left of the marker post to open up the second shot for all golfers.

The bigger hitters may go for the green in two if they wish, for most two fairway bunkers will need to be avoided when laying up. This is a very wide but shallow green meaning a well struck pitch shot is a must to keep the ball on this green, and be mindful of the pin position…..100 foot putts are common place on this green

One well struck shot is all that needed on this picturesque fi nal hole.

A long downhill par 3 awaits with out of bounds on the right and only half the green visible from the tee, some will favour the right side and use the bank but be mindful that the ball does not always bounce favourably towards the green.

We work with each individual that we teach, understanding that there is a “model swing” that we’d like to achieve, however we understand that over 90% of golfers we see can’t achieve this.We therefore work with peoples capabilities, trying to get the most out of their game. The club is planning a refurbishment of the original 1910 Club House in the winter of 2012/13.

This will include updating the heating system upgrading the insulation and replacing the existing roof, and renewing the soft furnishings, the club will continue to operate during this work and we hope to have it completed by the spring of 2013.

We very much intend to retain the character features of the existing building.
