Inside Your Computer - PC

Get All the Details on the Hardware Inside Your PC

What kind of computer setup do you have? What are the components of the computers in the computer lab (building 800, room 803)? Do you know all the options available and what is the function of the different components of your system? In Module 1/Unit 3: Hardware, you will review the computers basic parts.

You should know some details about your PCs innards. For example; If you could open the case of your computer;

How many expansion slots are available? What cards are installed in your expansion slots?

Which CPU do you have?

How much memory is installed?

How large is your hard drive? Which vendor?

Using your own personal computer or any computer in the computer lab (building 800, room 803), find the following information.

Assignment #1a: Inside Your PC Computer

STEP 1: First create a MSWord document name with the filename your_name_PC_hardware_part1.docx. In the contents of that document, type

STEP 2: Profile your computer

Windows 7 Operating System: Click Start, Right-click Computer, select properties

STEP 3: System Properties

Windows 7 Operating System: Listed are your processors make and speed, plus the amount of RAM in your system. Look at the information in the View basic information about your computer screen.

What Operating System are you running? What Version?

What is the speed of your CPU? How much RAM do you have?

Select the "Computer Name" tab.

What is the name of your computer?

DO NOT CHANGE ANYTHING !! We are just looking.

Make a PrintScreen#1 of the System Properties screen and paste the screen image into your your_name_PC_hardware_part1.docx document. Save your document.

STEP 4: Device Manager

Windows 7 Operating System: From the View Basic Information About Your Computer screen, click the Device Manager link on the left

On this screen you will find information covering pretty much all the devices inside and out that are attached to your PC and require a driver, including your display, DVD and CD drives, and network adapter.

Clicking your mouse on the + or - will expand or collapse the menus allowing you to see all the hardware installed on your computer. Double click on any of the items to open another screen of specific information. Take a look around, BUT MAKE NO CHANGES. Select the "Cancel" button to back out of where ever you are exploring and return to your desktop. Close all open windows.

Make a PrintScreen#2 of the Device Manager screen and paste the screen image into your your_name_PC_hardware_part1.docx document. Save your document.

STEP 5: Hard Disk Properties

Windows 7 Operating System: To determine your hard drive capacity, right-click the Local Disk (C:) drive icon and select Properties

You should see how much space you have used and how much hard disk space is available.

Make a PrintScreen#3 of the Disk Properties screen and paste the screen image into your your_name_PC_hardware_part1.doc document. Save your document, just to be safe

Feeling adventurous, explore the Tools, do you have Sharing enabled? Do you have disk quotas? You may see a security tab instead.
