Connect the Console Cable1 Before connecting to a terminal, PC, or
laptop, make sure its settings match
those of the console port on the switch.
The default sett ings of the console portare 9600 baud, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit,
no parity, and no flow control.
2 C onnect the supplied ro llover cable tothe console port on the switch.
3 Connect the other end of the consolecable to a terminal, PC , or laptop
running terminal emulation software
(such as P roC omm o r H yperTerminal)
by using an RJ-45 to DB-9 adapter(supplied) or, if necessary, an RJ-45 to
DB-25 adapter (not supplied).
4 From your terminal or PC , start theterminal emulation program.
Power Up the Switch
1Connect one end of the power cord to
the switch and the other end to an AC
power outlet.
N ote: I f you are connecting to a Cisco
600W AC redundant power system (RPS),
refer to theCatalyst 1900 SeriesI nstallation
and Configuration Guide and the latest RPS
documentation for more information.
2 Wait a pproximat ely 2 minutes for theswitch to completeits pow er-on self-test
(POST) and t o discover the netw ork.

AssignIPInformationandaPasswordtothe
SwitchYou assign an IP address to the switch so
that you can use the switch management
interfaces and so that the switch can
communicate with local routers and the
Internet. Assigning a passw ord provides
security aga inst unauthorized a ccess to the
options available from the management
interfaces and is required for using the
Ca talyst 1900 Sw itch Ma nager.
N ote: I f the swit ch will be a cluster
member, it is not always necessary to assign
IP informat ion or a password, as theswi tch
w il l be accessed and managed through t he
password and IP address of t he command
sw it ch. Refer to the Catalyst 1900 Seri es
I nstallat ion and Configuration G uide for
more information.

switch IP information, and record it here.

If the switch does not have an IP
ad dress, the C urrent setting appears as
0.0.0.0, and you can enter the IP
address of theswitch as theNew setting.
If the switch is connected to a network
that has a Dynamic Host Configurat ion
Prot ocol (DH CP)/Boot strap Protocol
(BOO TP) server, the server might
automatically assign an IP address.
4 I f you plan to assign a subnet mask anddefault gateway, use the [S] Subnet
maska nd [G] Default gatewayoptions
from the IP Confi guration Menu.
Assign a Password1 From the IP Configuration Menu, enter
the [X] Exitopt ion to again display theManagement Console Logon Screen.

8-character password, and verify asprompted. This password is an

The switch is designed to operate with lit t le
or no user intervention. In most cases, yo u
can use it with its default set t ings as soon as
you assign it an IP ad dress and password.
To change the sw itch configura tion and to
monitor network conditions and statistics,
you can use the management console menus
or use the web-based Catalyst 1900 Switch
Ma nager from anyw here on your intranet.
If the switch is running the Cisco Catalyst
1900/2820 EnterpriseEdition Softwa re, you
can also use the comma nd-line interface
(CLI).
The follow ing section describes how to
access the Catalyst 1900 Switch Manager
home page. For information about using the
management console menus or the Catalyst
1900 Switch Manager, refer to the Catalyst
1900 Seri es Installati on and Configuration
Guide. For information about theC LI, refer

After you assign an IP address and password to the swi tch , you can display the Ca ta lyst 1900

Display the Switch Manager Home PageWhen the browser is configured, display the Catalyst 1900 Switch Manager home page as
follows:
1 Enter the IP address of the switch in the Location field if you are using NetscapeCommunicator (the Address field if you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer), and press
Return.
2 Enter theswitch password assigned through the console menu (see Assign a Passwordin the previous section). At the prompt, click OK.
The Catalyst 1900 Switch Manager home page is displayed.
You can use the Switch Manager to change the switch configuration and to monitor switch
conditions and statistics from anywhere on your intranet.
Refer to the Catalyst 1900 Seri es I nstallati on and Configuration Guidefor complete
information about the Ca talyst 1900 Switch Ma nager and how to configure the switch.
Click Help forprocedures anddetailed fielddescriptions.
Click Cancelto discard allunsavedchanges.
Click Applyto save thechangesyou made.
Click the Modebutton to change
the mode the portLEDs display.
