Solutions Guide

Today’s Internet-based economy often demands around-the-clock business availability and customer service. Employees need to share information and communicate with the business systems that hold the company’s vital data. Collaboration and communications must be fast and efficient, whether employees are at the main office, traveling, or working from remote locations.

A network is critical to connect all the network devices and to support dissimilar applications, protocols, and services while efficiently moving data among people and business systems. It must also be smart enough to automatically fend off disruptive security incidents and to adjust to changing traffic loads to maintain consistent application performance.

Because networks have so many multidimensional functions, it is no longer practical or economically feasible to construct them by stringing together a large number of standalone components that are managed separately and have little or no awareness of one another. Rather, today’s networks require a significant level of technology and management integration to function optimally and securely.

Small Business SolutionsProviding access to essential business tools. Delivering customer service. Extending supply-chain.

Implementing these best practices will result in a simpler, systems-centric approach to networking that automates operations and lowers the total cost of ownership (TCO) for small businesses.

SMART DesignsThe network. Without the guesswork.

Cisco SmartDesigns are a portfolio of proven and validated network solutions, optimized to meet the needs of small businesses. They incorporate a best-in-class network foundation and advanced technologies — so Cisco partners don’t have to start from scratch every time for each new opportunity. Instead, they enable partners to effectively leverage a proven architecture that’s based on best practices and designed to grow with customers’ needs. Then, if required, partners can focus on customizing the solution and deploying the perfect advanced technologies and applications to address the unique business needs for the specific customer. The great part is, the newly designed network is ready to accommodate additional advanced technologies without a complete overhaul of the network foundation. Using SmartDesigns unlocks significant value for partners’ business operations.

• Frees-up partners to put their time, focus and energy on what matters most to their customers.

• Allows them to build an effective practice with opportunities for new revenue streams.

• Complements in-house training, knowledge base and process development.

• Enables greater profit margins through augmented efficiency and faster revenue realization.

• Above all, helps establish greater level of understanding, trust and cooperation between the Cisco partners and the small business customers.

Solutions Guide

The Layered Approach Today, thousands of partners use SmartDesigns globally. In a recent partner survey, the vast majority indicated these designs to be an “exact match” or a “very close” match to the network solution their customers needed. SmartDesigns have helped simplify the installation process, minimized outages and reduced the complexities of ongoing maintenance. What’s more, Cisco partners have found standardized network designs and implementation to be an essential stepping-stone to a successful managed services approach.

SmartDesigns are implemented in three basic layers, or steps.

STEP 1: The foundation design is chosen that best fits the customer needs. This is a best-practices architecture that is tested and ready to go — saving Cisco partners the headache of having to custom-build every time. Having a flexible foundation in place frees up partner’s schedule, and resources, to explore new revenue streams and opportunities with advanced technologies and applications (see outer layers).

STEP 2: Advanced technologies are then added, such as Wireless, Video, Storage and Unified Communications — all of which work easily with the foundation network. Because it’s all Cisco technology, there’s one vendor, one approach and no surprises. In addition, all the benefits of Cisco products are made available when customers are ready to add on. All of which results in a greater return on the initial investment for small business customers.

Cisco Small Business Solutions

STEP 3: With the foundation and advanced technologies in place, partners can focus on implementing the precise applications that will help customers meet their biggest business challenges. This is potentially an area of great mutual success, and offers the opportunity for even greater profit for partners in incremental business. With SmartDesigns, everybody wins.

Solutions Guide

Main Office is the primary location, providing most of the shared data resources, such as file servers, databases, business servers, web servers, and e-mail servers, as well as centralized networking resources, such as VPN (Virtual Private Network) gateway, Call control

capabilities. Typically, if a small business has a single location that location is the main office.

Remote Offices are typically connected to the main office by a dedicated VPN over a leased line or a broadband internet connection. Many of the remote offices have the same set up as the main office, albeit at a

smaller scale.

Home Offices are employees’ residential network connecting to the main office using remote access technology. In addition to the router, a home office network may include other network devices, such as switches.

Mobile Workers are employees or authorized partners who need to securely access the main office. Mobile workers may use any available 3G/4G network or public/private hotspots offering Internet access, such as airports, hotels, coffee shops, or in a private residence.

Business Locations Each small business is unique. However, they share significant common attributes for their network needs. A flexible SmartDesigns framework supports users whether distributed among multiple business locations or located in a single office. A typical network may start with a single-office deployment and simple services such as employee connectivity and resource sharing over a LAN with basic Internet access. Later, the implementation may be enhanced to support mobile workers, branch offices, or home offices. This modular approach lets a small business start with the basic functionality required, while providing the flexibility to grow in size and functionality as business requirements increase.

Consolidating these applications on a single server creates a cost-effective solution that is simple to set up, manage, and use, thereby providing a smooth migration from older, outdated telephony systems to unified communications.
