Cities by the sea - PORTO
Porto
Porto
O Porto tem origem num povoado pré-romano. Na época romana designava-se
Cale ou Portus Cale, sendo a origem do nome de Portugal.
The Port originates from a pre-Roman settlement. In Roman times designated Portus
Cale, the origin of the name of Portugal.
Porto
É nas mais belas encostas do rio Douro que nasce um dos vinhos mais
conhecidos do mundo, o vinho do Porto.
It is the most beautiful hills of the Douro river, which rises one of the most
popular wines in the world, the Port wine.
Because of the sacrifices they made to support the preparation of the fleet that sailed in 1415 to the conquest of Ceuta, with the population of Port offered to crusaders all meat available, leaving only the casings for food, taking with them accomplished a tasty dish which is now mandatory in any restaurant menu. Natural Porto won the nickname "tripeiros" a kinder expression.

Setúbal
The city of Setúbal, is located on the northern bank of the Sado River
estuary approximately 40 kilometres (25 miles) south of Portugal's capital,
Lisbon. It is also the seat of the Setúbal District.
In the beginning of the 20th century, Setúbal was the most important
center of Portugal's fishing industry, particularly sardines. None of the
many factories then created are operating today. However, the existing
maritime ports, either traditional, commercial and the new marines, keep
the city links to the ocean and water well alive and vibrant. Tourism, based
on the beautiful existing natural conditions plus excellent hotels, resorts
and infrastructures, is one of the city's most appreciated resources, due to
its interconnection location with Sado (river) on one side and Atlantic
Ocean on another, having a coast line with both. Also connected with the
nearby coast of the Arrábida hills natural park - which offers an unspoiled
nature and beautiful beaches to the Atlantic Ocean. A dolphin colony
inhabits the Sado River.

CITIES BY THE SEA FROM TURKEY
MAP OF TURKEY
Turkey is a country which is in a position of
peninsula. Therefore Turkey has a lot of cities by
the sea. İstanbul, İzmir, Antalya are some of the
biggest cities by the sea in Turkey.
İSTANBUL
Known as Constantinople or Byzantium Istanbul is the biggest Turkish city;
it was also the capital of the Ottoman Empire. Istanbul is now a huge motropolis
connecting cultures, continents and religions.
Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey, constituting the country’s economic,
cultural, and historical heart. With the population of 13.9 million, Istanbul is the third-
largest city in the world by population within city limits. Istanbul is a transcontinental
city, straddling the Bosphorus – one of the world’s busiest waterways – in
northwestern Turkey, between the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea. Its commercial
and historical center lies in Europe, while a third of its population lives in Asia.
Istanbul is located in northwestern Turkey within the Marmara Region. The
Bosphorus, which connects the Sea of Marmara to the Black Sea, divide the city into a
European side, Thracian side and an Asian side, Anatolian side.
Because of Istanbul’s location between the Sea of Mamara and the Black
Sea, the city has a moderate climate.
The Bosphorus remains strategically important. It is a major sea access
route for Russia and Ukraine. In more recent years, the Turkish Straits have become
particularly important for the oil industry. Russian oil, from ports is exported by
tankers to western Europe and the U.S. via the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles Straits.
The Bosphorus of Istanbul is particularly famous for the historic waterfront
houses ‘yalı’ built during the Ottoman period, which stretch along the strait’s
European and Asian shorelines.
Every year million of tourists come to Istanbul to see and feel the natural
and the historical beautiness of it.
İZMİR
Izmir is a large metropolis in the western extremity of Anatolia and the third
most populous city in Turkey, after Istanbul and Ankara. Izmir’s metropolitan area extends
along the outlying waters of the Gulf of Izmir.
Izmir has Turkey’s largest port after Istanbul. Izmir lies on the coast of the
Agean Sea. Izmir is famous for not only its industrial functions but also its touristic places.
Spa and health tourism is popular in some parts of it.
Generally Izmir is known as ‘the pearl of the west’ in Turkey. It has a great
nature and a rich historical and cultural heritage.
Also the city is known as ‘beautiful Izmir’ as it is blessed with numerous scenic
beauties and is under the effect of the Mediterranean climate. The summer is hot and dry
where as the winter is mild. Lush for all seasons, Izmir is one of the biggest pine nut
production areas.
One of the most beautiful descriptions of this city was made by Heredotus, who
was also from Izmir: ‘they have founded the city under the most beautiful sky and the best
climate that we know on Earth.’ Thus, the city has earned its place in history.
Alacatı, a district of Izmir, is a small town that has a renowened reputation as
paradise for wind and kite surfers. The continuous wind but calm sea, gives the perfect
conditions for water sports and enjoying the summer sun. Many surf schools, hotels,
boutique hotels, and pensions in Alacati town accomodate and host fans of sea and wind,
especially when the major event of the Alacati surf festival begins.
ANTALYA
Antalya is a city on the Mediterranean coast of southwestern Turkey. It is Turkey’s biggest
international sea resort. Antalya is in the south-west Anatolia, on the Mediterranean Gulf of
Antalya. The Taurus Mountains of southern Anatolia runs parallel to the Mediterranean in an
east-west direction, resulting in the formation of narrow coastal plains surrounded by
mountains on three sides and the sea on the fourth. Some parts of the coast feature
mountains plunging sharply into the sea, forming small natural bays and peninsulas. Antalya
is situated on one such plain where the mountains recede from the shore, consisting of two
flat areas formed of travertine rock at a mean height; the city center is on the rocky plain
closest the coast.
The area is shielded from the northerly winds by the Taurus Mountains. Antalya has a
hot summer Mediterranean climate with hot and dry summers and mild and rainy winters.
Antalya is an ideal holiday destination. With exotic beaches, water sports including;
scuba diving, sailing, paragliding, rafting, mountain climbing, tracking and much more.
The old harbour is now a marina with modern yachts and very nice to spend an
evening outside, having a meal or a drink next to the sea.
Antalya is a tourist center with beautiful beaches, hotels to suit all requirements,
restaurants, shops, pubs and bars. Many open summer events and concerts are taking place
during the summer. Because of all these great features every year lots of tourists come to
Antalya to spend their summer holiday in the most enjoyable way.
