Community empowerment in local governance has become a key component of government policy across the globe. Essentially, public services must primarily focus on the needs of citizens. Citizens should be engaged and involved in the development of services - the services which must be efficient, effective and innovative in their design and implementation. Governments are also realising that they need to involve their citizens in the planning and delivery of local solutions to local problems. Community Policing

Programme aimSince the mid-1980s, police forces around the world have tried to develop an effective working relationship with local communities to combat crime. Many of these initiatives form part of a broader social and political agenda aimed both at enhancing access to justice, and at building and sustaining safer communities.

This programme highlights recent community policing initiatives in the UK and reviews international best practice in this area. It recognises that citizen-focused policing applies within forces, at all levels, not just the public-facing departments.

Community-Driven Development: Building Effective Local Services through Community Empowerment and Local Leadership

This highly practical workshop offers insight into key contemporary initiatives here in the UK. There will be facilitated development sessions, speakers looking at the theory and practice of engagement, and visits to projects and initiatives with representatives of local authorities, community groups and local agencies.

Gender Mainstreaming

Combating Cyber Crime

Programme aimThe goal of mainstreaming gender equality is not about adding a ‘woman’s component’ or even a ‘gender equality component’ into an existing activity. It means bringing the experience, knowledge and interests of women and men to bear on policy making, management processes and on the delivery of services.

This programme provides a practical focus for developing and implementing tools and techniques to ensure the successful inclusion of gender mainstreaming strategy across a wide range of policy, programme and project initiatives.

Workshop aimThe use of computer networks to commit fraud, identity theft, data espionage and other criminal activity is an ever-present and growing threat to the integrity of organisations around the globe.

While the risk of cyber crime can never be completely eradicated, this workshop will introduce you to a range of techniques to combat it. Led by highly experienced fraud and computer crime investigators, the programme covers the key elements of cyber crime and some practical responses.

What you will learn: Understanding the goals and principles of mainstreaming for key decision makers

Implementing appropriate organisational arrangements and processes Building the resources to facilitate women’s participation and empowerment

Using analytical techniques and tools including □ Gender indicators and indexes, such as the UNDP gender and development Index (GDI) and Gender Empowerment Measure (GEM)

□ Gender impact assessment and its application to: – Surveys and forecasts – Cost–benefit analyses, checklists and guidelines – Techniques and tools for consultation and participation

□ Participation within your organisation/stakeholders of both sexes in the decision-making, monitoring and evaluation process

Benefits of attending - You will be able to: Make a direct impact on decision-making in mainstreaming policies, programmes and projects

Understand, develop and undertake gender budgeting and gender audits, with concrete financial allocations to address gender and women’s issues

Enable progress toward gender equality to be monitored

What you will learn: The history of cyber crime and the threat it poses to your country Effective computer crime legislation Balancing financial security and costs with human security Assessing and managing risk Incident reporting systems Virtual security: emails, viruses and hackers Detecting and preventing money laundering Computer forensics and the nature of evidence Retrieving evidence from computers, mobile telephones, Blackberries and PDAs

Proactive techniques that have been applied successfully Increasing the likelihood of successful prosecution

Benefits of attending - You will be able to: Assess the potential risk to your organisation from cyber crime and develop techniques to deter it

Launch a cyber crime investigation Review information security and better detect and prevent money laundering and fraudulent transactions

100% of delegates who attended our ‘Combating Cyber Crime’ course said that the topics covered by our Director of Studies and the material produced was ‘excellent’. Evaluation undertaken by 12 clients
