This guide contains details of the Key Stage 4 examination courses that we offer at Maidenhill. Each subject page contains the email address of the teacher who is responsible for that subject.

60% Portfolio: A sustained project developed in response to a brief and a selection of further work including sketch book, responses to gallery visits, independent study, 2 and 3D experimental and skills work. The Work submitted must include drawing activity and annotation. 40% External Task: A response to a selected externally set assignment. Work submitted must include drawing activity and annotation

Controlled assessment External Assignment ( exam) preparatory work starts January 2021

Other information

Both components must be entered. Controlled Assessment (Portfolio) terms 1 – 6 Y10 and terms 1 – 2 Y11.Formal exam of 10 hours at the start of term 5. 2nd January to March 2021 is the preparation period.

Special Equipment

Portfolio needed for storage and basic drawing and painting colour media required for home study. (These are all available at cost price from school) A Camera and an ability to access and print out hard copies of students own photographs is a requirement. Images stored only on mobile phones are not acceptable for use in lessons.

As a Parent, how can I help?

Encourage independent drawing and photography from first-hand experience. Visit exhibitions, museums, gallery and visual arts events both locally and when visiting further afield.

Core Computing

Exam Students will be completing a digital literacy style course, so that they can demonstrate their basic skills in computing.

No planned visits. However basic digital literacy skills are sought after in pretty much any industry that requires the use of a computer, so it is well worth the effort for the students to pass it.

Special Equipment Access to the Microsoft Office suite/internet/computer would be desirable.

As a Parent, how can I help?

Encourage them to use ICT independently but look into some of the more obscure features of applications software. Get them to create the budgets in Excel, thank you cards/letters in Word and presentations in PowerPoint. Saving you time and money!

Information Technologies

Exam Students will be completing a certificate in Information technologies. They will be creating an IT project using the project life cycle, taking in to consideration what the user wants.

Course details Students will study topics within three ‘themes’, namely: Identity and culture; local, national, international and global areas of interest; current and future study and employment.

They will complete periodic assessments at the end of each topic, which will mirror their final formal exams and will both assess their progress towards their targets and train them in successful strategies to use in their final examinations. They will also complete mock examinations in Y10 and Y11.

At the end of the course, students will be entered for examinations in all 4 skill areas (as outlined above) at either Foundation (grades 1 – 5) or Higher (grades 4 – 9).

Other information Exam entry tiers will be determined by the school and the subject leader and will reflect students’ target grades and their progress during the course.

Students have the opportunity to participate in practical activities as a player performer. These controlled practical assessments contribute towards 30% of the final grade. Each activity totalling 10%. Analysing and improving performance accounts for 10% of the final grade. Students have to identify and explain strengths and weaknesses within a specific activity and suggest ways to improve and monitor performance. The remaining 60% is made up of 2 exams. Science – Combined Science: Trilogy

Exam AQA Combined Science: Trilogy

Award 2 GCSEs

Number/type of exams and dates Two exams for each of the sciences (biology, chemistry and physics). Therefore there are 6 exams in total.

Tiers available Foundation or Higher

% of marks contributed by each component

There are 6 papers in total which are broken down in to Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Each paper is 1 hour and 15 minutes long and will contribute towards 16.7% of the overall GCSE.

Coursework details There is no longer a coursework element to the course. However, students will have to carry out a set of practicals which may be assessed in the exam.

Other information Re-takes are not possible as all assessment is linear (at the end of year 11)
